  1. i've been hit up at the saucer a few times sitting outside. i've also been begged for money/pizza inside of Franks late night several times. its never threatening, just slightly annoying, nothing else.
  2. nah, it'll be back open for the NLCS and WS.
  3. the astros are now 0.500 overall with a record of 3507-3507! last time they were 0.500 was in 1962 when they had a record of 6-6... fittingly, they beat the brewers to get 0.500 last night and it was to the brewers that they lost it in 1962.
  4. they have current available apartments along with floor plans and rates on their website: postproperties.com click on Available Apts/Rent on the right. looks like the start at $845 for the smallest studio (485 sqft)
  5. i read an article in the UH Paper, looks like they're expecting Dynamo to stick around for several years the daily cougar
  6. about 25 from downtown and you'll be at the Bay (146), this would be low speed. then 15 in open water to Kemah, and another 25 in open water to Galveston. 2 hours? you could take Joe's Boardwalk Beast, that takes 120 people almost 50 mph, of course that's an adventure speedboat, not a water taxi.
  7. yeah, but the game still takes too long, especially between pitches. but that's the way the game is played, and its not going to change. i really couldn't handle watching non-playoff baseball unless i'm with friends and drinking.
  8. but as a part of a huge development and a nodal transit center, it will be much less of a problem (in theory) then it is now as it stands.
  9. i spent 8 hours on that railing at the NLDS game 4 last year, best game of my life (too bad they don't start selling beer again for extra innings). i can't make the Astros opener, but i do plan on supporting the new guys in town. the Dynamo are reporting low ticket sales, i'll be there Sunday.
  10. its a little different when the personal freedom affects others, especially their health. you're not allowed to urinate in the street, why don't you complain about that "silly ban" ? that's probably not the best analogy, and i really don't want to argue over the law - that's pointless since it already passed. i actually am an occasional smoker, and don't mind it in clubs/bars or other venues. but i don't like it while i'm eating, so i was happy when this passed. i have no desire to call a complaint in and get anyone in trouble. it wasn't that big of a deal, it was a sports bar so i understand its in that in-between category. but it got so bad i was tasting smoke instead of my burger... "many owners believe" - isn't the law the law? whenever i read about this, it seemed so subjective, the definition of a bar area, etc.
  11. Houston passed a partial smoking ban in restaurants and covered bus shelters which went in to affect in September 2005. Restaurants can still permit smoking in bar areas, but it must be seperate from the dining area correct? I was at a sports bar/restaurant last weekend, and they had an ash tray at every table and people were smoking. I've noticed this at a lot of restaurants. Is the new law being enforced?
  12. are there still plans for ground floor retail on the Main St side of this garage?
  13. Best Bar to get kicked out of - Marquis II on Bissonnet Cheapest/stiffest drinks - Warren's downtown Place to get hammered on Sunday morning - La Strada when you get kicked out of Cecil's, you can always stumble into Biba's!
  14. by downtown NY, i was't thinking Times Square, but actually going to bars in say SoHo and walking back to the subway on some empty streets to a relatively empty station. i never feel safe doing that. the same with houston (to an obviously smaller scale). if i'm on Main in the club district, i feel safe up to at least 3am. and actually i feel safe pretty much all the time anywhere around there, even when its empty. i know there's a chance something may happen (as you said, moreso when the streets are void), but that's part of that kind of life. i don't think that's going to keep people from going out. look at the millions that (used to) go out to Bourbon St. many wouldn't consider that safe at any time, yet they kept going.
  15. why would it be unexceptable? obviously we don't want any crime, but downtown is going to have your rich, your homeless, and everything in between - there's bound to be some crime. i find walking around DT Houston safer at night then Chicago or NYC, as well as most cities i've been to internationally.
  16. yeah, i've only seen them in malls or as kiosks. maybe it'll look like this:
  17. another (generic) email from Mr. Luck: As you know, we launched the new name of Houston Dynamo last week. By all accounts, people seem pleased with the name although I am not na
  18. i guess we knew it was coming, but its still sad to hear
  19. http://www.flickr.com/ i really like the tags you can add in flickr http://myphotoalbum.com/ easy, customizable, i like how albums are arranged.
  20. according to this article which is a few weeks old: but the last article DJ posted said the name would be announced within days, and that was from the Chron on the 2nd. i really hope its not the Lone Stars...
  21. i'd like to add Frank's for a slice (especially at 3am)
  22. i just swing by academy on the way to campus. the one on edgebrook and gulf has about 10 shirts left, all size L and XL i think. it says Houston and 1836 underneath, and has the logo on the top. on the back is a cool looking soccer ball design, adidas. we'll see if i get any looks next week at the Mexico match. i doubt anyone will care.
  23. i figured as much considering part of his response did not make sense. oh well, hopefully that means he's getting a lot of complaints about the change, though it doesn't look like it's going to do anything.
  24. I emailed Oliver back and asked him if there will be another vote for the name. i also sent him the link to this forum and told him we had a good discussion going on the topic.
