  1. ok, i guess i'll quote you again. at first, you call it to simple strategically to work in the US, then you say "soccer is somewhat on par with baseball or basketball as far as strategy goes" which are two quite popular sports here. and you also said "males will naturally gravitate to the more skilled games like football" if you meant more strategic games, that's fine. i brought up skill level because you did. i still disagree with you, i don't think soccer is not popular here because its lack of strategy, since its very similar to hockey and basketball. and its low scoring, but look at our favorite past time. its just the culture here, which i think is changing. almost every other country in the world loves the sport, which is hard to argue with. people don't grow up watching it, don't have the teams to follow (which is coming), and just don't understand the sport. there are so many sports fans (at least down here) who have no appreciation for hockey, which is an amazing sport at every level. i just don't get how they don't give it a chance.
  2. so you've gone from soccer not being strategic, to putting it at the same level as two very popular sports here. I agree strategy in football, to a degree, is more complicated then soccer. but not skill level. this is really hard to compare, but other then the QB position, i don't see how you can say football requires more skill then soccer, hockey, or baseball.
  3. huh? have you ever watched soccer? there's as much strategy involved as any team sport. formations, positioning, attack strategies, etc. not much different from hockey or basketball.
  4. i'm going to miss willy... i understand he didn't get on as much as he needed to as a lead off man, but i think that was going to come with time. his defense will be sorely missed. i heard talks of putting Lane in center field on occasion? that'll be a joke.
  5. Hermann Park.org has a date of Dec 15th for the first night with the lighting. seems late... found this article: link
  6. here are some of my pics from the game- one of the smoke bombs victory! trophy presentation chron stadium edition after party
  7. i have to admit i really liked everthing about the park. it is a bit small, but perfect for that the MLS is today. i hope we follow that model, but keep it closer to downtown. i can't believe they had blue moon at the same price as budweiser. good selection indeed. it was a little cold for me, wish the sun were out. but everything worked out perfectly.
  8. i agree, that was pretty stupid. it was cool in the stands but no reason to throw it onto the field. especially so close to our goalie, i'm sure that smell didn't help him concentrate.
  9. wow, you guys just love to complain about everything huh? if you don't like soccer, fine. bottom line houston just won a professional championship. i agree that it sucks to end a game on a shootout, but at some point it has to come to that. have you ever ran up and down a 100+ yard field for 120 minutes straight? have you ever seen a stanley cup game that goes into 4 OTs? it starts getting really slow and sloppy. i was at the game, and it was up there in excitement. and i've been to a lot of playoff games (MLB, NBA, NHL). i was in the all orange section, and even though it wasn't sold out, our section was so loud nothing else mattered. we were all on our feet cheering for Houston for over two hours. dj, the smoke bombs were awesome. i don't know if they showed it all on TV, but when the guy went to clear it off the field he tried to pick it up and burned his hand. he then figured out that kicking it off was the better way to go. and there were quite a few people there cheering for New England in a few sections on the otherside. one thing surprised me was that i didn't see a single FC Dallas fan. driving out was amazing. busses, RV, painted cars all honking their horns and screaming. i wish i went down 45, but we even ran into plenty of fans on 35 on our way down to austin. people that like to wait over 1 minute between pitches for a low scoring game that they play 162 times in one season are calling the most popular sport in the world boring. funny.
  10. i've been to the roof twice, and didn't have any problems with the crowd. standard midtown stuff, thought it was a pretty good looking crowd too.
  11. read the first page of this thread. i'll be wearing my 1836 shirt as well. unless i get a jersey by then, but i've been having a hard time finding one. anyone know some place that sells them locally?
  12. i only saw random people with drums. but i did hear what sounded like a college band. we were wondering about that ourselves. i'll be in austin next weekend, we're making the trip up sunday for the game.
  13. well the atmosphere was great last night, and i hope we have a good showing of support next week in Frisco. from what i saw, it felt similar to the Aeros. a strong group of supporters that will always support the team.
  14. 17,440 according to the Chron. game's at 6pm sunday, and on HDNet. anyone know if they serve beer at Robertson?
  15. anyone catch the game last night? Ching put in a header in the 92nd minute (extra time) to win it. Colorado will be here next week for the second round. wish i would have been there, the crowd seemed very in to it. and the national commentators had nothing but good things to say about Robertson.
  16. chron article "The City Council voted today to extend Houston's indoor smoking ban to bars but to continue allowing smoking in outdoor patios and in bars that promote cigar smoking and derive significant revenue from tobacco sales. The 13-2 vote was a victory for Mayor Bill White, who wanted to extend the ban while leaving some locations available for public smoking. "
  17. BYOB? at the second largest AB Brewery in the nation? that's funny. i just called to verify (713-675-2311). It is tomorrow from 2-9- free, but you have to pay for concessions. Josh Owens, Dr. Jeff and the Pain Killers, and The Flags are performing. anyone know what type of bands these are?
  18. i heard something this morning on the radio about a party at the brewery on i-10, on saturday 10/14 from 2pm-10pm. supposed to have bands, tours, food, clydesdales, animals from busch gardens, and probably some beer. anyone hear about this? couldn't find anything online.
  19. the only places i've been to that have 2 drink minimums are strip clubs and comedy clubs. and i've been to quite a few - never do they force you to buy alcohol drinks. you can always get a coke, though they may charge you $7 for it. please let me know if there's a place that requires you to purchase two alcoholic drinks. bottom line for me, i don't care if people go to bars to be healthy or not. you can go and not drink, you can't go and not inhale second hand smoke if people are smoking. i'm at the point where i expect it at bars, and it would be nice not smelling like smoke when i leave, but i can deal. i do have a friend who loves to drink and party with us, but can't go to certain places that are too smokey because of his asthma.
  20. clemens tonight. pettitte is on sunday. which means we'll have RoyO for Tuesday if it comes to that.
  21. we have the same number of wins as STL, but one more loss. They have 4 games left to play, and we have 3. that's where the half game comes from. They have a makeup game with the Giants, and if they are within a half game of us (either behind or ahead), they will have to make that game up in STL monday. so if we win tonight, and they lose, we'll be a half game ahead. if after Sunday, we are one and a half games ahead, the STL-SF game will not be played, since it'll be meaningless. those teams will end the season only to have played 161 games. the braves are decent, and play us well. they also hate us (knocked them out of the NLDS the last two years), and don't want us to win our division on their soil. we have a good chance the next two days, but Pettitte vs Smoltz Sunday will be interesting. best we can do is play like we've been playing, and hope the Cards do the same.
  22. yup. let's hope the right guy shows up. its all or nothing with him. why not put RoyO on with three days rest? he consistently destroys the Pirates. then he possibly could be available for the last game against the Braves as well.
