  1. Are you sure you aren't thinking of Bordersville out by IAH? Acres Homes did rely on wells for a long time. My great grandfather dug many wells in Acres Homes in the early days, but Acres Home had city and county services by the early to mid 70s. Bordersville, on the other hand, was annexed by Houston in 1965, but didn't receive running water until 1981.
  2. Acres Homes, it's a time capsule as some streets still look as they did in the 1950s.
  3. For $40,000,000, this project sounds more like an outright replacement of the feeder roads with new concrete pavement rather than a standard asphalt overlay. For a comparison, TxDOT is planning to repave 59 between 610 and BW8 with an asphalt overlay, and the price shown is close to $4,000,000.
  4. I figure they'd go there because they want Potbelly style sandwiches, not banh mi.
  5. New Mexico is another state that commonly mounts their traffic lights horizontally. I've noticed that the vertically mounted traffic lights on the new light rail lines seem to be mounted mostly where the ROW is only 1 or 2 lanes in each direction with a few exceptions. Wider sections and cross streets seem to get the horizontally mounted traffic lights.
  6. Traffic lights are only mounted sideways in Texas? I guess some small towns and parts of San Antonio and Austin didn't get the memo.
  7. Broadway between I-45 and Hobby Airport is also terrible. That's not a great way to welcome folks to Houston who may have flown in via Hobby. I'm surprised how quickly Greenbriar's condition deteriorated. I think it was repaved around 2005 or 2006. Within 2 or 3 years, it was back to its suspension fitness testing ways.
  8. TxDOT proposed doing that in the early 90s, but it was killed because giving up part of Memorial Park was understandably unpopular. I'm not sure what would've stopped TxDOT from taking all the needed ROW for a wider freeway on the non Memorial Park side though.
  9. I use the Allergy Clinic on Fannin near Greenbriar.
  10. Looks like Gene Norman has a new project now. http://genenormanweather.com/
  11. Yep, those of us here in Riverside don't matter despite the meeting being held at a school in our neighborhood, and never mind the project being located less than a mile from many residents of our neighborhood. How did the President of your civic club receive notice of the meeting? TxDOT or the Friends of Hermann Park or some other agency must have sent him or her the info. Why inform the Southampton Civic Club which lies some 2 to 3 miles away from this proposed project and not inform a Civic Club which has homes only 1/3 mile away from the site of the proposed project? Sounds like whomever is disseminating the info about the public meeting is the one who is not on the ball. Like I said before, there's not even a notice about the public meeting on TxDOT's website. But, the South MacGregor Civic Club is now aware of the January 24th meeting at DeBakey, and its members will be there.
  12. It's funny that the Southampton Civic Club members received notice of the meeting, but people closer to 288 in civic clubs such as the South MacGregor Civic Club haven't received a notice. I checked TxDOT's website and there's no mention of the meeting. I had to call the Houston District office to get the info. It's like TxDOT doesn't want to publicize this very much when compared to things like the 290 Project.
  13. Thanks for the info. I was wondering about any public meetings and didn't see anything about this on TxDOT's website yet. I'll probably be there.
  14. I'm near 288 and S. MacGregor.
  15. For a general description, it was 2 lanes in each direction with no left turn lane. Left turns were prohibited on the entire stretch from 59 northward.
  16. Be glad you didn't bet the house on it because it's not.
  17. I'm on the eastern edge of TSU's campus right now, and I'm trying to figure where the footprint of the new dorms will be. I wonder if the old Lanier Hall dorms will be demolished to make room?
  18. Why redesign the Memorial/Waugh interchange to improve traffic operations? The cloverleaf handles the volume of traffic fine as-is.
  19. Childhood memories, I miss that old train. Funny how it was virtually unchanged from the 60s til its last ride a few years ago.
  20. I've enjoyed my evening walks with my friends along the newly widened portion of Brays Bayou from Ardmore west to Hermann Park. The new pedestrian bridge isn't officially open yet, but I've been across it a few times. The pedestrian tunnel underneath MacGregor was opened within the past week to connect the new bridge to the trail that goes around Hermann Park. It's nice to see the improvement in flood control and amenities in the area. Does anyone know if they're replacing or expanding the 1931 vintage Almeda Rd. bridge? Unlike at other bridges, the hike and bike trails do not extend underneath that bridge, but instead stop short. It looks like there is room for a tight squeeze underneath as-is, but I figure they're waiting until a new bridge is built or the current bridge is extended before doing so.
  21. Do you wonder if these leaks are intentional?
  22. Are you referring to this airport? http://www.houstonexecutiveairport.com/
  23. I checked it out. There was a nice crowd there, and I got to hear the whistle a few times. I hear it's departing at 8am and heading out to Navasota.
  24. I, like Triton, went to the new Walmart today to pick up a few items and see what was going on. I was expecting it to be packed to the gills, but parking was plentiful and I checked out without a wait.
