  1. Instead of a bus lane which could easily be added to 288, that ROW would be good for a passenger rail line running from Pearland to downtown. The southern terminus would have a station at Broadway and FM 521 in Pearland or at Highway 6 in Arcola. There would be a station at Holcombe for those going to the Med Center, then a station at TSU, and the northern terminus would be near the soccer stadium at Walker and Dowling. I would also extend Spur 5, but not just to 610, but all the way down to Alvin and re-designate it SH35.
  2. The King Mart gas station at the corner of Almeda and Hermann Dr. has been demolished. I passed by there today, and there was a chain link fence set up around the perimeter. I didn't see any "Coming Soon" signs like you see at some demolition sites. Does anyone know what's being erected in its place? I did a Google search to no avail. I presume it'll be something like small office space, or another gas station.
  3. There won't be HOV lanes. Instead, if TxDOT's interim plan goes ahead, there will be two reversible toll lanes in the median from US59 (it'll probably be signed as I-69 by the time construction begins) to CR58. If TxDOT goes with the ultimate plan, there will be a 4 lane facility in the median from US59 (future I-69) to CR60. I think the lanes will be operated in a similar fashion to the Katy Tollway lanes, which are free to HOV traffic during certain hours, but single occupant vehicles must pay a toll at all times, and HOV traffic must pay a toll during certain hours
  4. The IAH-HOU service was discontinued around 05 if memory serves correctly. It would usually be operated with a CoEx EMB-120 or an ATR-42. Sometimes, there would be a mainline 737on the route since CO had a 737 maintenance base at HOU, and it would help to reposition the 737 by putting it on a HOU-IAH leg.
  5. All new construction north of I-10 and US 290 in the Houston District has been receiving this treatment since around 2003-04. It's part of TxDOT's Green Ribbon Program. This design is called the Vertical Scheme.
  6. Cut and cap wouldn't make it double decked. The freeway would be covered and the land on top used for redevelopment.
  7. An urban architect and designer has proposed a plan to make I-35 depressed through downtown Austin and to cap it to allow the land to be re-purposed.   11. Most of those homes are post-war. Looking at Google Earth's 1943 imagery, there was a little development south of OST on Peerless, Allegheny, Del Rio, Burkett, and Lozier. Tierwester didn't extend south of OST until the 1943-1953 timeframe.
  12. I see drivers do stupid stuff on a regular basis in urban and suburban areas. I'm talking about drivers stopped at a red light with 3-4 car lengths between them and the car in front of them, or those who don't know the concept of proper space and almost kiss your rear bumper at the light. I've also seen drivers in the right lane of the freeway signal and get over to hug the right side of that lane when that lane gets wider for a short distance after a merge point. I see that happen a lot in the right lane of 288 NB just past where the onramp from Southmore merges with 288.
  13. I remember his critics called him "Out of Town Brown". Going out of town via the out of town Brown terminal, heh, that's funny. I have nothing against Brown, I've met him and he seems like a nice person and I think he was a good mayor, but if Terminal E is going to be named, Capt. A.J. High, who passed a month ago, would be a better contender. Capt. High was a WWII vet, flew for Trans Texas Airways/Texas International Airways and Continental, and landed the first official flight to IAH in 1969. I think those credentials merit some recognition at IAH. Looks like this thread has deviated from its airway. A little aviation humor for you.
  14. Bush was a pilot in the war. I think they used that aviation link to partly justify naming the airport for him. Leland had an aviation link, too, although grim, since it was a plane crash that killed him.
  15. Intercontinental may sound like a hokey or cheesy name, but I like it. There's no need to change the name just because some reporters on the other side of the nation read too fast. Sounds like you remember the campaign to have the airport named for Mickey Leland in the late 80s.
  16. Slow down, now. Not all news stories that come through Twitter are true. The AP Twitter page was hacked on April 23 with a claim that there were explosions at the White House and that the President was injured. Reactions to the tweet caused the Dow to drop 127 points within 2 minutes. The Dow recovered quickly once people figured out it was a hoax. Times have changed, but don't believe that info on Twitter is true because it was broadcasted from a reputable, official, or trusted source.   17. Left turns on Main were prohibited long before the light rail was built.
  18. That house has been flooded at least once since it lies in the pathway of the pre-channeled Brays Bayou. That's why it's mostly gutted. I like MCM homes, but the flood prone location of this one means whoever buys it and restores it may be in for grief after the next big flood.
  19. I think the neighborhood was a little more continuous in those days and thought of as one general area. N. Main runs straight up from Studewood to Independence Heights. 610 was built around 1962 and created a border of sorts. Highways have been known to do that. The referral to the area as Studewood is probably a carryover from those pre-610 days.

  21. I would think that the OP has common sense and a sense of caution. You have to be cautious where ever you go, not just the hood. People get robbed and hurt in Katy and the Woodlands, too.
  22. I saw the same commercial today for the first time on CNN and paused it when I saw the METRO bus. The lady boards the METRO bus (#2876 showing the #82 Downtown route on the sign for bus fans) at the stop on Louisiana and Lamar. Another version of the commercial shows self-reporting trash bins using wireless technology, again at the corner of Louisiana and Lamar.   23. My mother grew up in that neighborhood in the 40s-60s and they were referring to that area as Studewood way back then.
