  1. Battle of the Sexes Astrodome on Sept. 20, 1973 Mentioned briefly in a seperate "Dome" topic. I just remember hearing about it for what seemed like months. I think Riggs (male cheuvenist pig as they called him)passed away a few years ago. That match was of great significance for the women's lib movement. I will attach for younger viewers. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...8081101936.html
  2. Your right! I still have the album. Like I mentioned on another topic (or person) I and 2 others went the days before as they were constructing and fixing up the dome for this event. I grabbed my 8mm Bell & Howell and had my friend drive the 72 Cutlass convertible slowly as we drove up, I sat on top filming the Astrodome neon sign advertising this scheduled event. We just figured one day someone would want to see it? I always had historic documentation in mind. I do wish I had been able to film inside but that would have been a disaster. The mob was completely insane! That was the last time I will ever be near a stage in such a crowd. The stage background (someone help me if I forget) was like a very large massive modern pastel with swirls & cariatures to mimic the album. Designs you would see very often in MTV promo's. I think there were little sports cars racing across? I just recall my whole nabe (teens) all going together to see this concert. Good thing because most moved away shortly after. Sure wish someone would describe seeing Evil Knevil there! That must have been a blast!
  3. What was the architect thinking? Thats exactly what we knew would happen. Just cant work in our unpredictable extreme weather conditions. I personally always loved elevator music no matter where it is played. Very soothing. Not sure why people started knocking it, guess it was bound to happen as younger generations came along.
  4. This topic should be merged into the other numerous dome related topics. As far as memories for us it was always the: 1. Hundreds of ball games we went to see with friends & their dads and little league teams as a group. 2. The Tractor pull and crash up derby events 3. Grand finally (as we grew older) was seeing The Rolling Stones Concert in 1981. Was it the Start me up Tour? I know they were with ZZ Top & The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Seems like all the party animals in town went! Still have on 8mm film (and my concert jersey).
  5. Now when you shop at HEB-Gulfgate you can mentally picture this nice guy shopping next to you!
  6. Dude! You know this place quite well! Even Seller's is following back to sanity! I noticed that the last 2 times going there they also went back to the great 70's, 80's music classics! No more gunfire shots in the background as you shop! Bring in the Sex Pistols! (not pistola's) Johnny Rotten
  7. Got that right! Took a recent tour & planning a huge event soon. I was sold the minute I walked in. For a moment there, I thought I was above Central Park. Vista panamorica! This place is incredible!
  8. Yep! Thats the ribbons they wore like on Homecoming ie; football games. I think you could buy them at lunchtime from cheerleaders or at the school bookstore where you bought tickets, etc. We still have a newspaper article from around 1975 where my big sis was pictured in girls ROTC that year they were voted the best in Houston. They had to go to competitions over at some military recruit place on OST. I remember there was always a helicopter there. Gotta scan those before they vanish. We were lucky to be able to walk home everyday from Austin for lunch since we lived next to the EE Little League ballpark next door. Once I got into Distributive Education (DECA) where you only went to school 1/2 day then to work, it was total joy!
  9. WE LOVE IT! I could not believe I was listening to Ramones "Rock N Roll High" School while grabbing for the milk! It was fantastic! Then they crept into more obscure and almost forgotten Brit music that you only heard in the underground or New Wave clubs of the time. I ams till reeling! Finally our messages have been heard! Adam Ant
  10. Wonder if DJ's made an error they said at corner of Kirby/Westheimer thats correct right? Given the fact all of that new development is just across the street it was inevitable. What is occurring is the city is losing all older business's/icons that were so unique to the cityscape. All we are going to see are cookie cutter business's just like Lunaticfringe said. Lady DJ laughed how all the CVS's look the same. Clone 1....clone 2....clone 2.....clone 3.....get it? Best grab the digital camera and converge for interior/exterior photo shoot's whilst ya can.
  11. It was on one of the contemporary rock stations cant recall. The DJ's were all bummed out mentioned that CVS pretty much out did them. Yep, more Houston history... Sayanora!
  12. http://www.avalondiner.com/riveroaks.html http://splendidtable.publicradio.org/where...valondiner.html://http://www.avalondiner.com/riveroak...ndiner.html ://http://www.avalondiner.com/riveroak...diner.html Announced on radio this morning. Real bummer for long time Houstonians and everyone really.
  13. Today will mark 35 years of the discovery of this nightmare. Was on ABC 13 last night at 10PM. Still chilling after all these years.
  14. This place is a trip people. Kind of speechless. Flash bulbs, flash bulbs, flash bulbs. Bring your agent. Just go.
  15. Thank you for clearing that up. I sure would like to get my hands on a taping of that show, just for sake of curiosity. Imagine who the guests were? Wow, and I do mean WOW!
  16. What hurts the image of this place is the Greyhound Bus Station. If you stand in front of Sammy's you will see the constant stream of nuisance. Its just too close for comfort. Very unsettling for visitors. For the $ people are paying to live there its just not worth it. Long time Houstonian's would understand. This would probobly work ok for singles or a couple but no way I personally would have children around that scuz. Just too close for comfort. This is just an honest comment, sorry to hurt feelings. That Greyhound needs to go like now.
  17. I do admit that my years at Austin were the best and most fun years ever. My homeroom was just next door to the (then) 3rd floor lunchroom. You could see all the way south to the Gulf frwy from that lunchroom and when the tall windows were open the breeze would pass thru very nicely. I can still hear the sound of everyone walking across that very shiny, waxed wood floor. Our homeroom teacher was Mrs Spinks who taught homemaking, so we kids always sat at tables with ovens and cooked cakes/desserts near us (torture). Our lockers were right in the path of all the students going and leaving lunch at all 3 lunch times so were always chatting and cutting up with nearly everyone that passed by. Everyday was an event. Maybe thats why I still enjoy being around big crowds. It was a learning experience but I truly miss the fun. I made it to the last 2 reunions and was floored to see some of my original teacher's & faculty appear at that big (all classes) Austin reunion a few years ago. It was sad to hear of the ones that have passed away but was so cool to see the nice ones that used to urge me to continue my education, crafts & artwork. I am forever grateful.
  18. It's funny how several business's near Austin HS catered to the students. There were very nearby ice cream shops/florists, etc. Mustang Malt Shop (across the street) had green/white colors and a Mustang kicking in the air on the sign? Pretty sure. Place closed by 1978? Atchinson's or there is that florist caddy corner and still there to this day! Could buy your sweetheart a corsage and of course Homecoming arrangements too. It was such a big deal for the cheerleaders or other girls to show off around homecoming with all the long ribbons and bells, etc. Heap-o-Cream Ice Cream Shop on Telephone Rd (next door to Leonard's Dept Store) here is where many kids from all schools would hang out and then there was Frank's Grill too. Pretty much all along or near Dumble and most of Near EE intersections was like a small town America. Everyone knew and spoke to everyone.
  19. Oh my God! So there really was a Kitty's Corner! I was about the seek therapy to help me connect that title (kidding). It always stayed in my mind but since I was only about 6-8 yrs old then it seemed more like a dream I had as a child, but it truly existed. The great attached link only mentiond her name and the show but how did it differ from Kitterick's show? What was Kitty's Corner's format? I am guessing it must have been around circa 1966-68ish???
  20. It truly was a city within itself. Like we commented on several EEnd topics, many of the kids I grew up with had parents that owned business's along Telephone Road, went to local churches, ballpark, schools, etc. By the early 80's everyone fled in droves. Keep posting about the good old days! We love it!
  21. Maybe it even has the little places where everyone used to score. The Fright Shack or haunted house during Halloween was our favorite place to smooch and get away with it. The darkness was on our side for a change.
  22. I'll invite you to next big gathering (promise) the more the merrier.
  23. My (former) sister in law said she appeared twice for her Bday too. Can anyone help solve this true mystery? I could swear the phrase "Kitty's Korner" was used in Kitterick's or similar show? They would announce (or TV Guide) would have Kitty's Korner with both K's? I would gladly buy someone a cheeseburger with the answer. I have wondered for decades....
  24. Perfect synopsis! Been to several business mixers here and loved it. Grandioso atmosfera. Trust me, you will go back!
  25. Certainly hope they owners are reading this? Document all work from beginning to end, notify This Old House, Old House Journal, Old House Interiors and they more than likely will send over a film crew to do in stages, plus place in magazines. Might as well. Now who is getting the champagne for the inaguration of completion?
