  1. I guess most of you have seen this on the news last week? Heights teen slain by notorious serial killer remembered http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nb/hei...ws/6127116.html
  2. The blasted Rustins Lounge on Telephone bend finally had its roof collapse! Yeah! Formally the old much troubled Big Louie's bar for years it finally met its match, Thanks to Ike! The center roof is all messed up and hopefully will be flatened for all eternity. This would be a perfect spot for a grand gas station, I mean perfect.
  3. If you mean the cruddy Destino lets get ready for a party! Wow what a dump! I passed by the other day and thought of all of these wonderful Haif a mites. The middle of the building has a huge smack where a truck or something crashed into it? I will personally jump in the seat of the bulldozer as it plows that old eyesore down forever. The new school is going up right across the street so lets hope they prevent another dive from popping up. This whole corridor has so much potential with the new school coming. We can create a new topic like "what would you want to see built near this new school".
  4. Simply is hilarious how some actually loose sleep over a simple suggestion to the skyline. I just love. Yeppers, and here is the emiticon and the annoying short cut words that bother some of the usual Haif grouches. lol Lets just be glad we are getting some new additions to the skyline. Remember none of you OWN the city so go with the flow unless you are willing to contribute several million $$$ to the developer to "make it your way". lol
  5. We could sit around coming up with wonderful ideas for ages but the reality for business's is that the cost to do business down there would be outrageous. Maybe we could just open underground opium dens like in old San Francisco. Just a bit of pre-holday humor kiddoes. but seriously, bet the $ would be just too much, imagine if they just decided to seal them off forever? In Houston anything is possible even the insane.
  6. There should be a city wide poll to ask the public how many are tired of our numerous flat roof tops downtown. I dont care what anyone says, even Austin has more modern appearing buildings/spires than us. We need the folks that designed the buildings for the scenes in the more recent Star Wars film to come here. Cant wait for this project to be completed by the way! This morning the news stated it would be 19 floors maybe some floors have been chopped off. Ja!
  7. Thanks everyone for all the positive comments! having an open mind/imagination & inegenuity always produces great things. There are probably several countries examing the Houston tunnel system & will exceed in improvements. I was hoping to create a Haif contest to see 1. How would you design your own dinner/dance club venue and now I wish I could create a 2. How would you design your own section of the underground tunnel. Bet we get some very innovative examples.
  8. Perhaps this one can be merged with the other Shriner's temple topic? Most items within have were auctioned off months ago. We were one of numerous non-profits that had to search for a new home. I still want the huge ballroom chandelier. PS, everyone should take one final tour of this place its cavernous and contains many single unit meeting rooms with bars, trophies and most of all great memories. This place not only served as a spcial meeting place for numerous clubs and org, it also has been the site of hundreds of weddings, bar mitzfah's, Christmas parties, Galas ...etc. Once again Houston tears down its history.
  9. perhaps we could suggest that they start charging a cover charge on weekends? Have a club in the corner and crank it. Imagine if the crowd turned Goth-like.
  10. Thats exactly what I mean, we used to have town hall meetings under Shell Plaza all the time. Whenever we all were told to head on over all we had to do was walk to the elevator go down, doors open and you walk a few feet and your there, on time, drip dry, no sweat, etc. Convenience was the winner, saved time and trouble or risk of walking outside into traffic to cross the streets. You always see the caterers pushing carts of food to nearby business tenants, people walking in groups for exercise, tours, TOURS hear that? Many times the tourists were speaking foriegn languages and utterly fascinated of this mysterious and often talked about place. Summer time, yeah, you really appreciate the tunnels! I still remember back in mid 70's when Allen Center had the theaters underground, that was a marvel for its time! We would watch movies in 3 seperate theaters and never hear any outside traffic. We need more input from structural engineers and architects to continue to design, implement and expand this baby now. Here are a few items we should add to the tunnels. Bowling Alley Theaters Entertainment events (like what you see in malls) Sports bars ala Buffalo Wild Wings Santa and much more!
  11. That was a rush! I am guessing the neighborhood is a birds eye view of either River Oaks or Macgregor Place The big 2 level house with the numerous dormers should be a clue.
  12. There seems to have been several tunnel related topics on Haif and I am sure on several other forums. I worked at Pzl Place for almost 15 yrs and the flood events were as slim as winning the lotto and we seldom ever saw any homeless down there. Security was always on top of that issue. The big food courts were always the big draws and almost every time we had out of state/country visitors they wanted tours of which I happily obliged. I often wondered why the negative remarks on our tunnels on Haif, it seems that most long time Houstonian's should at least be proud of these I mean we aren't eaxtly Niagara Falls or DisneyLand. The tunnels give us a futureistic & modern appeal opposed to the stereotypical cowboy/horses/rodeo reputation. These tunnels were greatly improved since the last distaster (Allison in 2000). Bottom line is the more people knock your only hurting the city in more ways than you realize. For the naysayers, you have to experience the system, sounds like a long shot but if you ever work in downtown and get to know it, you will see what a fascinating experience it is.
  13. Does any one know how those tapes or whatever are rigged to play on for hours on end? I am quite serious when I say I want to ask the manager how I can get a copy for myself? Very serious. The other night I was tapping my foot (while grinning) to some very rare Adam Ant (or rather Ant Music as he used to put it). Stand & Deliver, Goody two shoes, etc. It was surreal! One hit after another, it was if I was in a Less Than Zero film, 80's time warp. Again, does anyone know if this music/store track can be bought? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPgHbt0ODr4
  14. It just burns me up to know that this one was torn down. Built in 1864! Just think, someone MUST have interior pics but are they around to tell us/the world?
  15. Still hard to believe that the blasted Churche's Fried Chicken is still there! If they dropped the H bomb that place would still be in operation. The tiny old former 1930's gas station across the street is the only real thing of historical significance in that intersection. I worked very briefly at S & S around 1980 and my boss had an aerial view photo of that very interesection. There were classic cars filling up gas and Lockwood was like just 2 lanes! The homes there had much larger frontage property. City must have gobbled it up from them to widen back when. The building we worked in is gone. That company used to employ many of the men/women from that neigborhood most would just walk in with lunch box in hand. Those were the days when you came out of the military, got married and got a job right there and stayed for decades. Something you wont see ever again. I can still hear that whistle blow to take a break, lunch and go home. Bygone era.
  16. Big time! and I just did her girlfriend's mod shades. Can you believe in order to get hired you had to be single, no children and hot! That was then. Although if you spoke another language it was a plus so sis was able to be stationed in Miami and San Juan, PR basically all along the Eastern seaboard and Canada. Even flying coach was like 1st class! My how the times have changed.
  17. These are kind of recreation topic related. Just old Polaroids of Eastwood Park circa 1970. Notice background views of the cool stuff kids could play on.
  18. Eastern Airlines taking mom out of brand new Intercontinental Airport on to Miami! 1969 Airlines stewardess's get to stay for lay over's at apt's near Intercontinental Airport 1966. Big sis (on right)
  19. Her BIO was kind of interesting and very tragic. Perhaps it had to do with her numerous nervous breakdowns? or just spoiled, we may never know. She was among several beauties of her time. Too many to name. I always wanted to see the house nonetheless.
  20. It was on the news last night! It was noted that its within a stones through (pardon the pun) from the main U of U campus central. This will be so convenient for the protesters. News even noted that it is sooooo visible from 45. Maybe they should leave the drive-thru teller lanes intact for those in a rush. Couldn't help it kiddoes. Let the games begin! http://www.39online.com/pages/landing_news...&feedID=155
  21. Oh my God Sparky! Your a genius! and what a coincidence, I was scanning (finally) some vintage family pics yesterday and was going to do one my mom took in this exact local at Playland or at least I am certain. However for some insane reason we (kids or someone) cut it to where only moms head is showing above a cutout like these! Now I wish I had or still can scan it. It was taken around mid-late 40's too? You win the oscar for best picture of the week as far as I'm concerned!
  22. Wow! You must be psychic! Just the other day I was jogging mom's memory again and she said the local kids (teens) used to walk over to The Roseland for a dance matinee as she called it. You were allowed entry to dance to your favorite swing music till you passed out & without a chaperone! I think she said it was during the day approx 2:00 PM to whatever, just be sure I asked where it was and she said Franklin. I wonder when it vanished? Had to have been there in mid to late 40's. At that time all they had were those giant electric fans for cooling off after dancing like crazy. The crowds would huddle around the fans like bee's. We really have it good nowadays! PS, you may want to glance at Houston's Orchestra's and Ballrooms topic for pics.
  23. I could swear that low down dive has been closed for about 5 yrs? I had to grin remembering it was once called The Red Bull Lounge in early 80's. We always said it would be a great idea to build a morgue next door and a funeral home next to that since the death count was so high at that dump. Seemed like every other weekend it was the site of stabbings, shootings, drug busts, etc. I often wished if there were a train derailment we would cross our fingers that the train would roll right on top of that blasted bldg. Couldnt help but notice the other day that chunks of the bldg are missing and has big holes in the walls. There was a former council member that said she would rid the East End of such pathetic derelic hangouts but once she got elected she fled for Austin and just giggled all the way like "see ya later suckers".
  24. Even after mentioning the old Lockwood Inn Barbecue place on Lockwood at 610 several times on Haif, its like losing a family member. That bad! Even when I seldom drive past, all thats left is the sign and post but the place burned to the ground decades ago. The links were killer and the sauce they poured over them was undescribeable. I am crying now. This place was just a few blocks from McReynold's Jr High (Indian territory) as some long time Houstonians may have called it. The competition barbecue place Cozy Kitchen was across the street but never could compare to Lockwood, never. Ok now I am really hungry!
