  1. We once had a huge Sales/Marketing event at the Windham. This was back in 94. They thought it was bad then (out of town guests) were afraid to jogging etc after reading and hearing about it in papers back then. There have been numerous topics on this infamous part of the city. I personally think it looks nice from a faaaar away distance like on the freeway peering down. Kind of like peeking down a snake pit.
  2. Amazing to find that newspaper movie section. Remember this was one of the MAIN reasons we used to buy the newspaper was to see what was showing at local neighborhood theaters? Even more amazing is that The Wayside Theater is listed! be sure to glance at the Bob Bailey pics of the Opening Ceremonies which included none other than Bob Hope as master of ceremonies?! What! Its sad the entertainment industry was going thru so many new innovative changes that made these nabe theaters a short lived but very fun experience. (Still flipping out on The Wayside) pass by this spot now and well....best remember the way it was.
  3. Remember, if anyone can donate any good furniture or other items listed please contact that phone number! This new office is actually really nice and has what appears to be a Cape Cod, seaside village nautical theme.
  4. Take a slow drive East on Holcombe as you pass Almeda and start approaching this bridge wait until you see how grand the entry looks! There are 4 very tall granite obelisks rising in to the very heavens! Look similar to this one below: Would be neat if they put this guy right in the middle! Cool.
  5. The residents here are very protective of the neighborhood, and (one hopes) able to scare developers away. My understanding was if a specific nabe has signs as you enter stating it is a historical area it was untouchable? Guess nothing is sacred any more....
  6. Is it possible to add up all of the $$$ not to mention all the wasted energy and hoola that went into the ground breaking ceremonies? This like inviting everyone to a huge party and then cancel at last minute. Again how much m o n e y was wasted.
  7. Looks like Auschwitz or Dachau concentration camps from above. Scary Just needs encircling barbed wire, gaurds etc
  8. I thought this was just that other older Jim West topic so I ignored for a moment but in any case, I just noticed it was a petition and just signed it! Buona fortuna...Best of luck!
  9. The convent (Villa de Matel) has had some very nice upgrades in the last few months. The very thickly wooded area out back has been cleared in various spots for expansion of the walking path. Nice benches have been added and much, much needed lighting! There has been numerous azaleas, pince trees and magnolias added to further enhance the area. It is so pleasant to see the retired sisters casually strolling along and just enjoying the views. Bird watchers should take note and come see the numerous varieties of birds that flock to these grounds. The distant sound of the bells in the tower are always a welcome to us locals nearby. I urge everyone to see this place. Once inside you are taken away to another world.
  10. Exactly! but be sure to bring the furry kitty in the avatar for the unveiling everyone will have a purrrrrfect time. and seriously when this place is complete someone should alert the local historical society or preservation org to be in attendance, I will get media coverage anything! This is something Houston needs to be proud of.
  11. Astrodomain was a very commonly used word. May never hear again it seems. Notice the Howard Johnson's red roof on bottom left of postcard. This whole whole area was to be the most futuristic of design.
  12. Try the Rosenberg Library. Wow, this is another major Houston mystery. Time is of the essence in finding patrons that enjoyed this place. Most people that were born around 1922 are already approx 86 years of age, so yes it would be a miracle if any one "living person" a tad older could recount. I have a real good feeling the name Venice Park was a hark on the already famous West Coast venue Venice Beach Amusement Park Pier. http://www.westland.net/venicehistory/
  13. You read my mind exactly! the Star Pizza across from Shepard Plaza is the ultimate! and even after 30 plus years Spanky's on Woodridge by Gulfgate is still the most of the most absolute killer pizza! Gauranteed to make you smile as they roll you out the front door. Once you try the hand-tossed supreme, you will be lusting for it for eternity! Here is Star Pizza on Shepard: Here, everyone take a slice!
  14. Like in the Urban Cowboy scenes right. Long time ago, wow.
  15. All I can say is this car is so cool! This crazy guy was waaaaaay ahead of his time in car economy. Everyone in Houston needs this sucker! and most of us ride with clowns anyway!lol
  16. This is good to hear. We all thought they were going to demolish the whole place.
  17. Juego de La vida loca? or Gioco di vita!
  18. Here he is at the world famous Astrodome! You must be in the crowd! Look's like there was an early show & an evening show. Wowee! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciXov2rWW3Q
  19. Correct, must double as a parking local for the not so near ballpark. They could mean the Game of Life too? Now if it said Release the Hounds.... hmmmm.
  20. Elvis was a big deal that's all we kids would hear in school. Some of the kids parents went but it seemed so adult to us. We were more interested in the usual kid stuff. It would be fantastic if some of you could post some pictures of "The King". I'm sure Priscilla wouldn't mind.
  21. That is awesome. People are really different from what others describe. Media had engraved in everyones minds that they despised each other. Such is life. What used to really dazzle (or frighten) me as a kid, was checking out the HUGE speakers dangling on those long and very thin lines. (See far top right) I always imagined them breaking and killing people. Yikes!
  22. Former Jackson Jr High alumni. Here is a pic of Jaime Davila & family. He is mentioned every now & then when the names of EE notables topics arise. My big bro played baseball with him at EE Little League circa 1972. Was a very easy going guy. A very promising career cut short by trajedy... and chron article: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...l%3Den%26sa%3DN
  23. Oh my God! It's on wiki! Rolling Stones 81 Tour and there are the graphics I described (cars racing around) Memory not so bad (yet) I do remember being a bit disappointed because it was just Mick Jagger running all of their hits into a medly of sorts. I was expecting him to sing the whole song thru but it was just snipets all bunched together. It was so overcrowded I do not see how the fire marshall allowed it to happen. Almost got crushed up front luckily someone pulled me up. I said never again, but it was a one time event for me anyway. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone...rican_Tour_1981
  24. People need to take note and buy this book! It has been years since I personally saw any historic pics of the area but I do recall they were great! Hundreds of model T cars & what seemed like a thousand people. It was just really cool.
