  1. Just for the sake of nostalgia, here is a 1980 commercial. 2nd video has good close ups of the rides in it more recent final days.
  2. I was in the area yesterday and went ahead and had to take another glance. I always have to see the left side where the porte-cochere can be seen. As I noted in a seperate topic, these were very common back in the day. Also known as a carriage porch, guests would stop and get off then horse would continue to the back, just like a car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porte-cochere
  3. I agree. All we have to do is use the same ideas of a monorail. Nothing unsightly about this. We just need monorail to hell with it. Houston, city of the future!
  4. I really need to take pictures of the souvenirs we stock piled on over the years. Still have: 1. A complete minature tea pot set of Astroworld tea set I got for mom one time, has all of those original rides and charaters engraved in color on them. 2. A tall beer mug in shape of that German style village with Astroword pictures on it. 3. A tall 7 Up very long and streched in a warped shape they sold at that glass blower shop they had. You walked in a this dude was making all kind of shapes and junk out of various soft drink glass bottles. I think it was in the Swiss Village? Does anyone remember the name of the 2 separate car riding location? One was a Model T old fashioned car ride on those metal tracks. 2nd was a sports car (like Speed Racer) type of ride. They had those guys yelling not to bumo into each other but you did it anyway. Imagine whiplash as a kid. Ja! The names of these two rides fail me. What really gets me is they should have auctioned them off or something what became of all of those model T's and race cars?! Remember how spooky the Swamp Buggy was? You had to wait in very long, long tines sometimes. Once strapped in it went straight up in the darkness of what was supposed to be a old tree trunk and once on top it tilted out at and freaking angle as if to tip you over but it stayed at that angle as it careened down around and around and around and you could see all of Houston or dowtown skyline for short glimpses as you either got sick or screamed you brains out. It was always hilarious hearing all the Marsha Brady look-a-likes screaming around you. As normal we staggered out of the little buggy one it was over. The Bamboo Shoot was always one to look forward to in summer. At the very end we always yelled everyone lean forward! So more water would cover us! Nice cool off!
  5. That w i d e front entry way is what starts the drama and allure of the house. I see Edwardian society getting out of horse drawn carriages then onto these steps stopping & chatting or commenting on the flowered gardens then going in for tea. There was once a time in our city. Imagine a child having a recital and the sounds of the upright piano echoing out into the porch and ladies fanning themselves on a cool brisk evening. A formal garden party with local notables mingling. The beautiful kitty in your avatar should be resting right in the center of the doorway.
  6. Now, your killing me. Ok out of kindness, back to Inglese. Never thought of how one would say Hijack in Spanolo? Hola Juan or jackee-o ? I think it sustantivo? no its secustrar! en Italiano e dirrotare... capisce?
  7. Speaking of the Astroworld boundaries, I still remember when we kids as a group would run and get a ride on the train that went around Astroworld. On ocassion we could see (or bust) other older teens sneaking into the park. I heard as years passed some had cut a the chain link fence to gain access. They would be running in with long hair flying around laughing. Most times the locomotive engineer didnt notice but we would all be cracking up as they ran past. Quiet dangerous it was, but oh well. I was too chicken to even think of doing that. We always paid, times werent that bad. Did everyone like the miniature Rainbo Breads they would give you in that tiny bakery shop? Very fresh! Were about 5-6 inch loaves for about 10 cents each. Mine always got crushed in the running around frenzy/ excitement of the park.
  8. Does anyone know when this school was built? I was trying to figure out the timeline of when very simliar other local schools appeared of this same style of architecture. Could it be early or late 1920's or 30's? Looks very much like well...most other inner city educational structures when the city was small in population. Did anyone ever get to jump onto the roof or similar goofy stories? We did over at Jackson and got insulation all over our crazy bodies. Yep real fun...
  9. Es mejor a decir la pinche madre no? Como queira, lo van a llamar "el cabron line color de caca". Eso si se joye mas bien como no? Va ir en medio de el barrio de cabrones! Ja! Ya es tiempo de garar unas birongas no?
  10. See post #407 On a side note, I wish Houston would have a contest for "Best New Designed Bridge". New topic!
  11. Numerous famous people have always commented on the fabulous views from Zaza (When it was The Warwick) I know Bob Hope said it was his all time favorite in the USA. However the Mosaic will more than likely equal or surpass that statement. The fundraiser (we are at) at Mosaic was by the pool and that was spectacular. Felt like we were in San Diego or somewhere out of this world. No it wasnt the champagne either. Mosaic is a masterpiece in the making (more buildings for me to worship) Ja! I can hardly wait to see what that bridge will look like after competed that is. Any one have renderings, etc? Sneak previews? PS, you can register for a tour too! Don't be bashful... http://www.mosaichouston.com/
  12. Oh what the heck, now there is a topic just for Stephen F Austin HS located on Dumble street. http://www.gcs.k12.in.us/nwhs/images/mustang%20logo.jpg There is a recent mailing to sign up for a grad directory that will list all graduates dating back to when the school first opened. Need current biographical info for the directory. Anyone interested can call Toll Free 1 866-783-7609 Kelly J. Hardy Harris Connect Directory Office http://www.harrisconnect.com/ Call so you (or family) can be included! There were a few additonal comments from others that attended Austin on the Jackson Jr High topic. If anyone has any past photos/stories join in!
  13. Not sure what RHS stands for but Jackson has always (or was) a Junior High School as far as I know. Oddly enough that after 35 years or so the scene surrounding the football field has gone virtually untouched. Most of the large brick homes are all still there. Most of the wooden shacks ie; the music room, other homerooms including my old one, have all been removed. There was no fence surrounding the field or front but I think there is now. This old school resembles 2 others I know of, the HS in the Heights and the one on Almeda near DT. Built in 1920's??? Still wonder what became of all of those great old trophies in the huge glass cases at front entrance at Jackson? Landfill?
  14. In fact, this whole section of Almeda and Holcombe/Binz is it? is taking on a whole new look! I have a real good feeling that (these areas are that are now seeing a ressurgance or new interest) were once intended to be just that, back in the day. If you start at Mosaic and drive north into DT you can see a whole new appearance. Its kind of like a 60 year gap that happened. Make any sense? We have that topic about The Spanish Village restuarant opening in 1953 so that kind of sets the date right. Area was quite the place to be and as time went on area went into not being so interesting. Here we are today with a fantastic comeback! Mi piace davvero - I really like it!
  15. This reminds me of a home, a few houses from where we grew up on the near East End that was rented out after our childhood friends moved away. This house was rented to a couple with a child. One day there were cops and lots of hoopla. Seems he killed her with an ax in the hallway entering the dining room. After all the media died down the owners finally rented out. These crazy hippies we knew, rented it and said the blood was still visible on the door and bottom of wall. They thought it was sort of far out and left as is. The home is still there and I can assure that even present owners are not aware of its gory past. No telling how many hundreds of residences have been the scenes of similar horror stories.
  16. My big brother and I remember him quite well. It all seemed so real and the black and white made no difference to us. He was part of the kid line up after him Batman, The Green Hornet, etc. Good ol days. (See Batman's phone number topic under Historic Houston). There were some updates on Kitirick and Cadet Don in the Chron a few years ago. Pleasant, wholesome memories.
  17. I see theaters, shopping and entertainment in this very spot for the future. Must have had some do some research of how other popular campus' have progressed. One of the best examples of what this can be like would be UCLA campus or Westwood Village: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westwood,_Los...les,_California http://www.seeing-stars.com/shop/westwood.shtml It can be done, let's do it!
  18. Exactly. If you read the true story, at least one bedrooms was the "torture" room. Only thing missing was a guillotine. In fact, I personally would not want to live on the same street. Feel nautious...turning blue...
  19. Wow! Picked up a pizza at the new Pizza Hut about a block from the old one on Calhoun and the whole landscape has changed. What an improvement! Most of the old parking lots are going away for good and there are several buildings and or garages going up. Got to see to believe.
  20. You mean that boat shed is still standing? Not torn down yet? Ugh and was Heights candyshop really a candyshop or was it just a nickname? what was that? one of the places he picked up these teens at? Story was never that clear at the time. Still somewhat shocked that anyone in thier right mind would actually inhabit that Pasadena house? Like living in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre home.
  21. No, this one looked just like Laverne DeFazio of Laverne & Shirley fame. Maybe she got fired from her job at the beer bottling plant? Had a Brooklyn dialect too! I should have done like Squiggy, and popped her one! Hey Shuyall!
  22. We just worship that home! Houston history if ever there was! Everything about it just is cool even the yards. Once completed it would be perfect for a movie location. Imagine a turn of the century ball of Houston aristocracy milling about, etc. This whole block and neighboring homes are fantastico! Belle fortuna!
  23. Now that reminds me of Primal Therapy! Anyone remember that? I think it was like screaming as loud as you can in group therapy to release the years of mental anguish/trauma? National Lampoon did a great parody on it once. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primal_therapy
  24. I hear ya. I tested the Charismatic Center at Cullen once and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. When the rock band on stage started up, that's when I said "time to get out of here". Maybe we should have waited till they started passing the joint around? Do you feel like I do? (Peter Fampton jamming in the background).
