Like my Grandma said sometime about 1980, "Everyone talks about the good old days. Well, I lived in the good old days, and they just weren't that good compared to today". She specifically mentioned cars, air conditioning, medical care and streets. Minorities were treated like crap, and the world was skewed in favor of white men. And, most things just didn't work as well as they do now.

The average suburban British house is pretty uninspiring. I wouldn't see that as a plus when looking at homes.

I am more interested in what's happening to the bank building, since Star Pizza owns it, and did not renew the lease for the Rockefeller Hall folks.

The Heights Restaurant And Bar Scene - More Coming
Ross replied to Freelander's topic in The Heights
Not until there's a place to get decent bagels North of I-10. -
You really want to close the most popular golf course in the city? That course is packed, plus it is a great course. It's also been there since the 30's, and is historic. Last I heard, it also makes a profit.

Victims of the drought. A lot of trees died.

On light rail Dallas is light years ahead of houston
Ross replied to Slick Vik's topic in Traffic and Transportation
Essentially, the piece says that Dallas used old rail ROW to build a relatively cheap, but reasonably extensive, system no one uses, while Houston spent a ton of money building rail on streets, which is used by more people than in Dallas, but doesn't have nearly as much length. -
Lighting Up The Montrose Bridges Over I59
Ross replied to trymahjong's topic in Traffic and Transportation
When the bridges were new and the lighting all worked, that's what they looked like. It didn't last long.- 172 replies

Not always. I can start work any time between 6 and 9.

Vik, that may be true, but it has nothing to do with gerrymandering.

Then fly someone else. Or, use the miles more often. There's never a guarantee that you will get to use them.

Crosby, Arthur, Andrews, Robin Streets Repaving
Ross replied to Luminare's topic in Traffic and Transportation
This controversy has gone on for a while. The bricks were laid by freed slaves and their families as Freedmanstown developed. Hence the desire to not mess with them. -
"Live Well Network" plug pulled by Disney-ABC Television Group
Ross replied to Blue Dogs's topic in Houston Television
I probably get more than 50, but I didn't feel like rolling through the channels to count all of the 5 or 6 channel 14's, the 22's, and all those foreign language channels in the 50's. I actually spend more time watching Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon, though. We love not spending $120 per month on cable.- 8 replies

"Live Well Network" plug pulled by Disney-ABC Television Group
Ross replied to Blue Dogs's topic in Houston Television
With digital TV, there are many additional channels available. With a digital tuner for over the air broadcast, you will see the extra channels. Channel 20 uses 20.2 as a classic movie channel. There are about 50 channels available in Houston.- 8 replies

That one is on 8th between Harvard and Heights, with the better looking part on Harvard, as opposed to the brick brutalist crap on Heights. As far as I know that's still a phone exchange. I haven't seen anything that indicates redevelopment is nigh.

I've known people who would have thought a growler per guest was just a good start. Of course, they usually just buy Bud Light, or some other dreck.

As was much of what is n ow Downtown. The area around Caroline and Buffalo Bayou was called Quality Hill because of the rich people living there. And from an older thread, check out the pictures of waht stood at 2016 Main and other nearby locations http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/5093-galveston-and-houston-architectural-housing-styles/#entry70760

We lived in Plano from 1969 to 1972. Population was 15,000 or so, there was one High School that had recently become 4A, and there was pretty much nothing West of 75. I recently read that the last undeveloped area in Plano is being developed, putting it on a par with the other cities in the area that are land locked and unable to grow.

That lot sits under 288 just South of where MacGregor Way comes off of Hermann Deive, East of Almeda. Here's the block book link http://books.tax.hctx.net/v061/AE1997_61-1_0106.jpg. You can see the area on Google Earth rolled back to 1953. It's due East of the Mosaic. -
Wasn't there a Texas Instruments plant out past Jersey Village? I forget exactly where, but in the early 80's, it seemed like a long way out there.

The last use of that hotel was as a dorm for UHD, plus some student organization offices. It smelled of sewage most of the time. There was some resistance to its demolition, but it wasn't a great building by then. I think it finally went away in the early 90's

No, it is not true. There is an ordinance against dangerous dogs, but not specifically against pit bulls, mastiffs, or any other breed. https://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=10123 Chapter 6.
