  1. I have to admit no small degree of amusement imagining the reactions of a multitude of HAIFers firing up Einstuerzende Neubauten videos with the volume cranked, with no prior knowledge of them but figuring that they must be on-topic from the name.
  2. Doubt there's anything sketchy about that seller just based on price - they're a huge UK-based outfit that's a high-volume seller on Amazon. They have some negative feedback but that's to be expected with the bigger sellers. You can't please everyone. I'm not anti-iTunes per se (I use it for other things), but I have an aversion to paying for music that's been subjected to lossy compression (i.e., mp3s). I prefer physical media but don't mind ripping my own mp3s from uncompressed files, or purchasing lossless downloads (typically FLACs). That said, Microsoft had a deal over the past few weeks where they were offering mp3s of entire albums for free via their Music Deals app, as well as mp3s of big, expensive multi-CD sets for $1.99. By way of comparison, one of the $1.99 sets I saw sells for $45 on iTunes. At that price, I couldn't resist.
  3. No, because I never purchase music from iTunes. The only music in my iTunes library is from CDs that I own and have ripped. Do you use Spotify? Might want to check there to see if they have it. Amazon has used copies starting at $0.32, but the cheapest ones are from overseas, so forget about the instant gratification factor: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00005O13R/ref=tmm_acd_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&sr=&qid=
  4. Katz's building was new construction. It's situated differently on the site than the old Tila's building was (Tila's had quite a bit more setback from Westheimer).
  5. I sense a great need for a YouTube supercut of the demo footage from all available angles, with the soundtrack adjusted appropriately. How about it, "Sergio"?
  6. It's not mentioned anywhere in the ABC13 article, but I can't believe that the USPS isn't going to have some sort of retail postal presence downtown after the current post office closes. But they're clearly not going to have a main distribution center there. That spreadsheet indicates that all incoming letter and flat mail at the current site is already being processed through the North Houston distribution center as part of the transition.
  7. I was paraphrasing the linked article. I don't think it was taken off the market, the article was just poorly worded:
  8. Downtown post office to close after the first of the year, per the USPS. No buyer for the site yet, but it will be put back on the market next year: http://abc13.com/news/what-will-closure-of-downtown-post-office-mean/441038/ If I'm reading the USPS data on consolidations correctly, all services will end at the current site on 5/31/2015. There's a detailed spreadsheet covering all planned USPS consolidations at http://about.usps.com/news/electronic-press-kits/our-future-network/welcome.htm (click on "Planned 2015 consolidations" to download the spreadsheet). Also of note: the USPS is revising service standards in the new year to tack on another day to the average time for First Class Mail delivery. I expect that I'm possibly the only person here who will miss having a retail post office and distribution center at the current site. So it goes.
  9. It's been quite a while since I was last in SF, but a few things haven't been mentioned yet which may or may not be of interest to you. If you're a fan of Hitchcock, there's always the "Vertigo Tour" of locations for that particular film (Muir Woods, the Palace of Fine Arts, Mission Dolores, the Presidio, etc.). Plenty of info out there via Google - a recent one that I just ran across is at http://sf.curbed.com/archives/2014/10/07/a_carefully_plotted_totally_stalky_map_of_hitchcocks_vertigo.php. Sites related to the history of the counterculture: obviously the Haight and North Beach. Off the top of my head, 710 Ashbury (Grateful Dead house), 2400 Fulton (Jefferson Airplane house), 318 Parnassus (Hunter Thompson's apartment while he was writing Hell's Angels), and 1805 Geary (site of the original Fillmore Auditorium). Have a drink at Vesuvio in North Beach, watering hole to many Beat-era writers, and also right across the alley from City Lights Bookstore. I'd definitely agree with the earlier recommendations to drive the PCH down to Big Sur, if you get out of the city. Absolutely spectacular scenery. The last time I was there, we drove down from SF through Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel to Point Lobos, which is at the northern end of the Big Sur coastline (http://www.pointlobos.org/). If you go, you should be sure to get out of the car and walk down to the shoreline; at Point Lobos there are places where you can wander down the beach right up to the Pacific Ocean.
  10. IIRC you ought to be getting a lot faster than 1.2Mbps upload speed with Blast. It should be closer to 10Mbps, assuming your modem is DOCSIS 3.0 certified (which it should be if it's reasonably new). If you don't have it already, download Comcast's My Account mobile app. It'll tell you quickly if there's a service issue in your area, and if so, the ETA for resolution. If everything checks out there, then it's probably time to grit your teeth and call Comcast's customer "service" number, and pray you get a CSR with a semblance of a clue.
  11. Yes. Katz's is located on the site where Tila's used to be. The old Tila's building was set farther back from the street than Katz's is.
  12. I think this varies depending on who your distributor is. The one that handles home delivery for my neighborhood has been pretty good about getting replacements for missing papers to me on the same day, usually within an hour or two of reporting it. Occasionally I don't get one until the next day. The guy who used to be the distributor several years ago even gave me his cell phone number and encouraged me to call him directly if I had a delivery problem, and again, whenever I had to call him, I'd get a same-day replacement. What really chaps my posterior is that the Powers that Be removed the option to request a credit for missing papers on the website in lieu of redelivery. There are times when I'd just as soon go buy a replacement paper at the gas station and request a credit rather than wait for redelivery. That, and the mess they made of the online comics page when they redesigned it several years ago, removing the functionality that allowed you to build your own custom page.
  13. Oh, I picked up the sarcasm just fine - I thought that was a prerequisite for posting to HAIF. But it still wasn't clear that anyone knew who the pic really was.
  14. Y'all must not have watched much TV in the 70s (or perhaps weren't born yet).
  15. I've been in this house before. It's very nice. The Swamplot commenters complaining about the kitchen and bath are off base, and should think about how many other mods in the Bend have been lost to lot value/new construction sales. Hopefully it will go to new owners who will appreciate it as much as the current owners have.
  16. If you mean the old Eckerd's location, the new tenant is DaVita (outpatient dialysis). I think they already have signage up but are still working on the buildout. http://www.davita.com/
  17. I had an office there for several months about 15 years ago, when the company I worked for was playing musical chairs with several departments due to severe space constraints at our usual location. They leased an entire floor (or possibly two) at 600 Jefferson for a year or so to accommodate the overflow while they were implementing a more permanent plan. It was great - I wound up with an enormous office that looked faintly ridiculous with only a desk and a couple of guest chairs in it, and was remarkably productive since our remote location almost totally killed the impromptu "drive-by" interruptions that were the bane of working in our main location's open-plan office space. Some of the interior spaces had seen better days back then, so I'm not too surprised to hear that they'll be doing some interior updates now.
  18. Yeah, I always thought they had a decent burger, and as an undergrad they were a convenient walk from campus on those occasions when we couldn't abide Central Kitchen's haute cuisine. Years after the Village location closed, I used to occasionally go to the I-10 location for old times' sake, which AFAIK was the last remaining outpost until it closed as well. And the one that was catty-corner to the River Oaks Cineplex Odeon was always good for a quick pre- or post-movie meal.
  19. One of my drinking buddies back in the day always maintained that slogan should've been "over 2 dozen sold, over 1 dozen digested". I always suspected they were being unfairly blamed for his intemperance in other areas.
  20. That would have been the Fast and Cool Club. https://houstonpunkart.wordpress.com/category/fast-and-cool-club/
  21. I went there the first week they were open in the new location, and wound up having to go further down S. Rice, turn around, and come back to get into the parking lot. I assumed they had an entrance/exit on Westpark but didn't bother to confirm. The absence of one is insane, but even if they add one, the new location is still a much bigger PITA to get in and out of than the old one was.
  22. The linked article wasn't clear on whether this would be an additional campus, or whether they will relocate from the current site, but the press release states that they will relocate and close the existing campus (and presumably put the property up for sale): http://www.nordangliaeducation.com/our-schools/houston/article/2014/11/11/a-new-campus-for-the-british-international-school-of-houston The current campus has housed a succession of schools since the early 1970s, when it was built for Northwest Academy, the predecessor to both Houston Christian High School and First Baptist Academy. It was vacated when the new HCHS facility was built off of Beltway 8, and the British International School subsequently took over in 2000.
