  1. Here in the Northside, I've heard more than a few complaints from people having trouble getting CBS OTA. I've never been able to pull it in using an indoor Mohu Leaf antenna, and suspect that the only foolproof solution would involve a much bigger, attic-mounted antenna. Not willing to go that route at least for now, as I also have cable TV and can get CBS there. TV Fool has an online tool you can use to check the signal strength of broadcast stations at your location: TV Signal Locator
  2. http://www.houstontranstar.org/about_transtar/ Right there on their website, if Mr. Norquist, er, LTAWACS had bothered to look. They also offer tours of the facility for anyone who'd like to get an up-close view of their daily operations.
  3. Considering the one on Dunlavy and the one on Buffalo Speedway, I'd agree that adding another location on the Shepherd Plaza site is a headscratcher. I realize the other two stores are usually quite crowded, but it's disappointing that other parts of town that could easily support an HEB are still left wanting while another one is already being planned for an area that's already well-populated with their stores.
  4. Nice. The Fox Photo logo next to the datestamps on the prints got me thinking about the once-ubiquitous jingle "Fox Photo, look for the fox", which is surprisingly nowhere to be found on YouTube.
  5. Discovered last night that the Periscope is now fully functional. It was originally supposed to be completed several months ago, and the last time I was there it was still cordoned off, but I guess they wanted to ensure it was up and running to coincide with the formal opening of the cistern.
  6. We were all waiting for you to post about it, given your (presumed) proximity to the incident. I was half expecting photos of billowing black smoke taken from in front of your residence.
  7. It was demoed several days ago, and the lot's been cleared. Nothing there now but an unobstructed view of the back side of the Houston Heights Tower.
  8. I'd expect the neighborhood parking issue to get resolved as soon as they can petition the city to restrict on-street parking to permit holders only. That process should've been started by neighborhood residents in advance of the venue's opening, as it didn't take clairvoyance to predict what was going to happen. Also, Lot A is valet only? That's gotta be a clusterf...uh, somewhat problematic when there's a packed show letting out and everyone's lined up trying to get their cars at the same time.
  9. Chicago Italian Beef's deep-dish pizza is really good. And their thin-crust hand-tossed pizza is no slouch either. I've been curious about the pizza Gelazzi sells (apparently it's some sort of small-scale franchise agreement with another out-of-town entity?), but the last time I was in the area and in the mood for pizza, I found out that it takes about 45 minutes to prepare once you place your order, and I wasn't able to wait that long that day.
  10. Anyone else having trouble with saved/custom activity streams? I can access each subforum just fine from the home page, but when I try to go to my "unread since last visit" saved activity stream, I'm getting the following error using Chrome:
  11. I love the Barbecue Inn, but haven't y'all ever heard the old joke that no one goes there for the barbecue? Seriously, they're hard to beat when it comes to seafood and fried chicken, but when it comes to BBQ, Hungry Farmer wins (and they're not only cheaper but also serve bigger portions).
  12. I haven't watched Channel 11's newscast with anything approaching regularity since Steve Smith retired.
  13. They usually do a decent job of using the road signs to warn well in advance of ongoing construction closures, but I rely far more on the website (http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/) for real-time traffic/incident data and construction zones. They don't have an app but it's easy enough to drop a shortcut to the website on your phone's home screen. INRIX also has a very useful app powered by crowdsourced traffic data.
  14. I suspect you're going to be more than a little interested in this - just announced today from Arrow Video: Details here: http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=721 (for UK customers - they haven't posted preorder links for US customers yet).
  15. You should be able to mouse over the quote, CTRL + right-click, and select "remove quote" from the pop-up context menu. But as IronTiger pointed out elsewhere, this is not always foolproof - I've occasionally had problems with removing quotes on this and other boards running the current version of the software.
  16. There are metered ramps on both the northbound and southbound lanes of 45 after the signal at Cavalcade. A lot of people do ignore them, but on several recent occasions I've seen a motorcycle cop monitoring the ramps from an unobtrusive spot some distance back and ticketing drivers who don't obey the signals.

  19. It was Luke's Hamburgers prior to its current incarnation as Zone D'Erotica, but before Luke's it was originally a Roy Rogers restaurant.
  20. Nope, not me. I've run across a few other folks online who use the same avatar. I don't hang out very often on the IMDB boards but I'm not surprised there's someone using it there.
  21. Lorino's/Local Charm has been discussed here before. The original location at Telephone and Lawndale closed in 1996 or thereabouts before reopening on Washington Ave. several years later. It's long gone now. Chron piece on the reopening: http://www.chron.com/entertainment/article/The-blues-gets-a-new-home-at-Local-Charm-1994525.php Previous HAIF thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/10779-lorenos-local-charm/
  22. Production credit used for many of the films written/produced/directed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger). The greatest British filmmakers who ever lived.
  23. Yeah, I suspect the younger people have had "Brooke Smith" permanently imprinted as a direct result of seeing those median signs innumerable times while traveling back and forth to the D&T Drive Inn on Enid.
