  1. After a long absence, Greenspoint once again has a movie theatre: Premiere Cinema at Greenspoint Mall opens
  2. Wow, that is terrible news. I've eaten there off and on for years, and when I wound up working near the mall in 2007-2008, I would head over to the food court at least once a week for lunch and more often than not get a couple of slices at Brothers. I've known many people who couldn't believe that decent pizza, let alone great pizza, could ever be found at a mall food court, but there it was. Any idea why they moved? They always seemed to be doing good business at lunch and on the weekends.
  3. I haven't seen any mention of this on HAIF, and I suppose Historic Houston is probably the most appropriate forum to post it in. Annie Ray Watkin Hoagland Strange, the last surviving daughter of noted Houston architect William Ward Watkin, passed away last Monday at the age of 95. Chronicle obituary
  4. That's the one. I can't remember exactly when the changeover happened.
  5. The Fiesta on Dunlavy at W. Alabama used to be a Safeway. There was also a Safeway that became an AppleTree on Holcombe between Kirby and Buffalo Speedway.
  6. Chronicle endorsement of revised ordinance
  7. Which corner did you live on? Was that in the Norman (SE corner), by any chance? I lived there in '84 or so. Haven't been by there to see what's been built since it burned down last year.
  8. Since when is Numbers gone? There are still live shows listed on their website into November. Did I miss something? Edit: Hadn't seen the other thread about it yet before I posted. Wow, that truly sucks.
  9. Fantastic news. As a card-carrying swineophile, I've really been wanting to try out some of their pork for a while, but haven't yet managed to make it over to the Dairymaids' warehouse or the farmers' market when they've been at either place.
  10. An eight-minute segment from Eyewitness News on the day of the fire:
  11. Fortune just released its 2010 rankings, and this year Wal-Mart is not only the US' but also the world's largest company by revenue: Fortune Global 500
  12. Up to a point. The Accord, as big as it has gotten, is still nowhere near the softly-suspended luxobarge that the Camry is. People who are used to driving Buicks and similar large American sedans will almost always prefer the Camry, finding the Accord too stiffly-sprung for their tastes. But the US Accord is quite different than the Accord sold in Europe and Japan, which is rebadged as the Acura TSX for US sale and is considerably smaller and sportier. Of course, either of them are worlds removed from the 1980 Accord sedan I got for my wife in 1993 after someone ran a red light and totaled her VW Rabbit.
  13. I would agree with most of those sentiments. I think most of the blame can be attributed to the fact that Honda executive leadership used to come up almost exclusively through the ranks of engineering as opposed to finance. That hasn't been the case for quite some time. Big cars have their place, but not at the expense of forgetting what got Honda its reputation in the first place - small, well-engineered, high-quality cars. I've owned quite a few Hondas over the past 20+ years. I own two now, and they are 11 and 10 years old respectively. Hondas used to clearly distinguish themselves from the pack, but there isn't nearly as much that I find appealing in the newer ones.
  14. Honda has lost its way design-wise, particularly when it comes to the front ends of most of their lineup. The Civic and the Fit are OK, but the Accord and Odyssey front ends are far from attractive. And the less said about the same feature on Acuras, the better.
  15. I used to eat at there semi-regularly, but the food and the service both took a downturn. Combine that with a minor menu change that took away one of my favorite combos there, and I haven't been back since. Hopefully the downtown location will get things back on track, as when they first opened in Montrose they were considerably better than the average sandwich shop.
  16. Well, it's not exactly a megaplex like the Edwards or AMC venues, but the Angelika downtown fits those criteria, and it's plenty big. For a number of years, I would regularly get passes to AMC theaters from a family member who never had any use for them, so I'd always wait a couple of weeks until the no-pass restrictions went away before catching new releases. Now that my source of passes has dried up and I'm down to my last half-dozen or so, we'll probably tend to opt for the Edwards Marq-E or the Angelika (it's a big plus that I can go from pulling out of my driveway to paying at the Angelika's box office in about 15 minutes). But as the moviegoing experience has become increasingly debased, I'd just as soon opt for a repertory screening at the MFAH more often than not. It's too bad that Rice has basically ceded the repertory market to the MFAH; I used to spend a lot of time in the cozy confines of the Rice Media Center in the 80s and 90s, but I can't remember the last time I was there (and the parking situation truly sucks now as well).
  17. Went to Pie in the Sky for the first time earlier this week, and I can foresee it becoming a regular destination. Apparently most of their business so far is the breakfast crowd; we got dinner to go and there was practically no one else there, but then again we tend to be late diners and the Heights tends to roll up the streets early, especially during the week. Given the name of the place, I had to get a slice of pie, and it was damn good. I ate it right before going to bed around midnight, which in retrospect may have been ill-advised, but it didn't seem to affect my ability to go out like a light as soon as I hit the sheets.
  18. I wouldn't kick that CTS-V wagon out of my garage. How many other station wagons (or "estate wagons", if you're European) have 550+HP? That kind of power, and handling that is calibrated to match it, can cause one to forgive the styling sins that accompany it.
  19. Someburger El Rey Laredo Taqueria (the one on Washington is within the boundaries laid out, the ones on Cavalcade and Patton just east of 45) Berryhill Pink's Hickory Hollow I've been to most of the other places already mentioned, but these are the only ones that I can say with anything approaching certainty I've eaten at 12 times a year.
  20. Now there's something you don't see every day. There was a tribute in AutoBlog a couple of weeks ago marking the 40th anniversary of the model's introduction: Citroen SM turns 40
  21. I sit corrected. I hadn't looked at the ABC13 link when I posted that, but it is clearly the same building. I saw a few movies at the Gaylynn in its later Gaylynn Terrace incarnation. I haven't been to the mall in years, but now I'm tempted to get an in-person look at the old theater building. I'd love to see what it looks like inside now.
  22. The Gaylynn was demolished and the Sharpstown 8-plex was built on the same site. I assume the former 8-plex is what's housing the charter school now? Gaylynn info (with pics)
