  1. Was wondering if something had happened - noticed while walking by there the other night that all of the artwork that had been on the walls was gone. I was afraid they might be going out of business, but this is much better news.
  2. Wouldn't be surprised. There were a lot fewer bars in the Village back in the day, and I had at least a passing familiarity with those that I wasn't already a regular at.
  3. Vinal Edge doesn't always close at 7. Sometimes they have special events, usually with a live band, that go on until 9-ish. As a matter of fact, there's going to be a book release party there this Friday from 7-9 with several punk bands: http://www.pmpress.org/content/calendar_event.php?eid=20130426101912283 Granted, I don't expect the number of people reading this who are actually interested in the history of the Houston punk scene to be greater than you could count on one hand with fingers left over, but I thought it was worth mentioning nevertheless. I've been saying for years that the Heights is inevitably destined to wind up just like West U, and 19th St. like the Rice Village. It's just a matter of time. Kaldi Cafe being replaced by Shade was an early indicator. That doesn't mean I find that prospect anything less than appalling. I used to frequent the Village before Chuggers became the Gingerman, Poor Man's Country Club was the local option for BBQ instead of Goode Company, and Dan Patrick was still running a sports bar near the intersection of Kirby and Rice. I've known one of the key developers in the area for a number of years, and although I'm sure he'd disagree with me, the development in the Village made a lot of money for a lot of people but didn't make it "better" than it used to be, just different.
  4. Wow, I would love to see those if you ever locate them.
  5. Obituary from Thursday's Houston Chronicle: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle/obituary.aspx?n=wylie-vale&pid=162631926
  6. The initials of the original owner's sons. http://www.29-95.com/bars-clubs/story/dt-drive-inn-get-update
  7. Sucks but I can't say I'm entirely surprised. I actually shop there more than at any of the other Macy's as it's the closest one to my house since the Northwest Mall store closed.
  8. ITYM Chelsea's 804 (as opposed to 504): http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl/1987_492739/it-s-goodbye-to-chelsea-s-804-but-hello-to-club-he.html
  9. Apparently they were for Rose Cullen's birthday.
  10. I've come to the conclusion that it's a complex issue. People who oppose the Ashby high-rise (or any similar development) = NIMBYs (preferably uttered with an appropriately spittle-flecked tone of boundless contempt and derision) People who oppose the homeless being seen or heard anywhere near their place of residence = paragons of neighborhood stewardship HTH
  11. They already are. I believe that the distinction is that these are considered pistols that are chambered to fire shotgun shells, not rifles or shotguns that have been modified with a barrel length that would never pass muster legally on a longarm. Taurus offers a wide variety of pistols chambered for .410 shotshells as well as .45 pistol rounds: http://www.taurususa.com/gun-selector-results.cfm?series=41
  12. Not my ticket, sadly, just a photo I stumbled across while trying to confirm the year of the show. And yeah, I'm still pissed about it - I was (and still am) a huge fan, and have never again had the chance to see Iggy live since then. He just turned 65 last week, and I'm determined to catch him while we're both still ambulatory.
  13. Didn't the Agora used to be the Palace, or was it the other way around? My not-so-favorite Agora moment was not getting to see Iggy Pop there in 1980. I was 16, and couldn't pass for 18 to get in.
  14. Thanks for posting this, we had been thinking about going but weren't aware that the tour included access to the interior of the house (albeit not the entire house). The gravel garden path was completely closed yesterday afternoon due to the weather - I assume that the original intent was to allow visitors to explore more of the gardens besides what could be seen from the vantage point of the patio in the rear of the house? Despite the weather issues, $5 was quite a bargain for what was definitely a rare opportunity to see a spectacular house. We also stopped to check out 56 Tiel Way on the way home, very nice to see it in person after having read about its background in the Neuhaus book.
  15. My wife and I held our wedding there in 1998. Before the ceremony, we screened Buster Keaton's ONE WEEK. It was a big hit with the guests.
  16. Bill Williams Chicken House on S. Main. http://blog.chron.com/bayoucityhistory/2010/06/at-home-at-bill-williams-chicken-house/
  17. Mickey D's on the first floor of St. Luke's. Never figured that one out unless they're trying to create more business for the Texas Heart Institute.
  18. Count me in as another fan of Asia Market. The last time I was there, the young backpacker-type guy at the table next to us had a look of complete amazement as he dug into his meal and claimed that it was the first Thai place he'd found locally where the food was just like what he'd had in Bangkok.
  19. You're probably thinking of McElroy's, which has the furniture from the Rice Hotel's Old Capitol Club. http://mcelroyspub.com/mcelroys/index8680.html?area=info&caid=8&page_id=125&thislevel=1
  20. The initials of Howard E. Butt, the son of the company founder: http://www.heb.com/s...history/3000002 Pasternak's. I miss that place, it was still open when I first moved into the area in the early 80s. Can't remember the business that moved in after they closed, but eventually they went out of business too and the original building was razed.
  21. Indeed. I'll go back even further - what about the BBQ place (Texas something Barbecue?) that occupied the spot where Smoothie King is now in the early 80s? Or when Hungry's (then Hungry International) was a couple of blocks further north on lower Westheimer?
