  1. I have a lot of thoughts about all of this, but I won't post it publicly. I will say, none of this surprises me because I had a hunch what's being alleged was going to happen.
  2. A new dining tenant is coming soon to the Shops at Arrive Upper Kirby (formerly known as the Kirby Collection). According to What Now Houston, à restaurant and nightclub/lounge named Se7en is leasing a unit within the retail portion of the development. Se7en's estimated opening is this fall, possibly late October or November, at 3300 Kirby Dr, Ste B. A few details from the article: "An upscale supper club is in the works for the heart of River Oaks in Houston. Se7en, pronounced Seven, will offer a high-end, glamorous ambiance with Asian-inspired cuisine offering French, Mediterranean flavors." https://whatnowhou.com/supper-club-to-offer-asian-influenced-french-mediterranean-cuisine/ https://7houston.com
  3. In recent years the ground floor of the Sterne Building, 300 Main St, has housed several food and beverage tenants. Some of those businesses have included: tapas restaurant Cielo, coffee shop and cafe The Honeymoon, and coffee shop Boomtown. According to an article yesterday, the owner of casual Mexican eatery and bar La Calle is opening a bar concept in the ground floor unit of the Sterne Building at 300 Main St. The bar will pay homage to 80's Spanish pop & rock music. Posts about it were found in the Downtown Bar and Restaurant Scene - More Coming post:
  4. The Sterne Building is located at 300 Main St at the corner of Congress Ave. Images of the building found on Loopnet: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/300-Main-St-Houston-TX/24918263 https://www.houstontx.gov/planning/HistoricPres/landmarks/11PL102_Sterne_Bldg_300_Main_St.pdf
  5. Rare, the steakhouse and lounge at 4105 Washington Ave, was in risk of closing a month after opening. This is one of many eye-opening allegations stated in a lawsuit filed in early May from the restaurant's investors. KTRK / ABC 13 reported on the lawsuit against Don Bowie, chef and owner(?) of Rare last week. Other allegations against Bowie are claims of theft/embezzlement and fraud. From the news report: "[Andre]Johnson and Akon contributed approximately $1.2 million to fund the restaurant, and Bowie was supposed to give an additional $700,000. Although, the investors wrote in the lawsuit they do not believe the chef ever gave any money." Bowie's former partner at Taste made this same allegation in a lawsuit against Bowie in 2020. Also: "They [investors] said banking records show unexplained transfers out of the restaurant's accounts. Attorneys believe the money made at Rare is being used to fund Bowie's other restaurant and for personal use." https://abc13.com/houston-chef-sued-don-bowie-by-partners-missing-money-lawsuit/11991296/ https://abc13.com/taste-bar-and-kitchen-employees-payment-chef-bowie/12001979/
  6. KTRK / ABC 13 reported on the lawsuit against Don Bowie, chef and owner of Taste, the restaurant located in the Sterling House at 3015 Bagby St. The lawsuit was brought forth by Amir Ansari, nightlife veteran and landlord of the property. From the article: "Bowie is also wrapped up in lawsuits with the landlord of his Midtown restaurant, who is trying to evict him for non-payment of rent. Bowie claims he did pay, and there is a dispute over the lease." There are also accounts of the kitchen conditions, resulting in multiple health violations and closures. https://abc13.com/taste-bar-and-kitchen-employees-payment-chef-bowie/12001979/ Another article goes into a little more details about the lawsuit between Ansari and Bowie: "Amir Ansari said he has been trying to evict the chef since March for non-payment of rent. He attempted to lock out Bowie and the Taste staff, but he was able to regain access." One of the issues is due to an unauthorized addition of a second-story deck, allegedly constructed poorly and has wood rot: "In claims made by the landlord in civil filings, the chef made unauthorized additions to the building, including adding a second-story deck." https://abc13.com/houston-chef-sued-don-bowie-by-partners-missing-money-lawsuit/11991296/ Documents from the lawsuit contains photos of the structural damage. There are photos of the kitchen's condition.
  7. I agree. I do not think there will be significant changes to the former Spring Street Beer & Wine Garden at 1920 Houston Ave. Alrhough I haven't received a definitive answer about the direction under new management, I'm hoping it is not. I also am uncertain if proprietors of Pour Behavior and Lincoln Bar are the sole owners or if there is a partnership deal in place with the new owners. An entity filing seems to indicate other owners. In regards to the new name under the bar's new ownership, it won't deviate much from the original one. The new owners submitted filings for the trade name Spring Street Bar in late May/early June.
  8. A rendering of Backyard, the bar & grill opening at 1400 W 20th St in Shady Acres.
  9. Google Map updated its street view of 1807 Yale St recently. The image shows the outside of the property in May. It appears outside renovations for Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina are/were still ongoing as of May (interior renovations as well).
  10. I think the sushi restaurant planned for Stomping Grounds is named Sora Sushi, at least that was what announced in an old Re:Vive newsletter a few years ago. Sora Sushi was also listed as an upcoming tenant in a NextSeed crowdsourcing campaign for Cherry Block. The proprietors behind Handies Douzo, Kokoro, and Aiko are involved with Sora Sushi. But those plans were in play about two or three years ago, prior to the Covid pandemic. It is possible plans have changed and another sushi restaurant may have leased the space. However, since Re:Vive is being tight-lipped anout it, I'm leaning more towards this being a new sushi-centric concept from the group behind Kokoro. Why else keep this under wraps if it a popular restaurant group isn't involved? Hopefully, Re:Vive will announce an update soon.
  11. Yesterday, Chron.com published an article detailing current and upcoming food and beverage tenants for the Stomping Ground. This is the mixed-use development located in Garden Oaks at 1223 W 34th St. • Luloo's Day + Night This all-day cafe and bakery from Blood Bros. BBQ and pastry chef Alyssa Dole is set to open in early August. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu of salads and smoked meats, plus a full bar, while Dole will operate the bakery located on the mezzanine level. • Pho Fix The owners of Crawfish Cafe will soon open the first full-service location of their Vietnamese concept, Pho Fix, which currently operates as a stall at Underground food hall downtown. Guests can expect a menu of noodle soups and banh mi sandwiches, plus a full bar. • Mystery sushi restaurant A local sushi operator that has yet to be named will open a Japanese restaurant this fall. The concept will have a full bar and a mezzanine for private dining. https://www.chron.com/food/article/stomping-grounds-garden-oaks-houston-open-17274383.php
  12. Great find, @hindesky! Jethro's Backyard, coming to 95 Tuam, Suite 102, is a casual bar & grill restaurant concept from Los Angeles restaurateurs. The restaurateurs are the proprietors of Texas-style barbecue restaurant Horse Thief BBQ and Cafe Birdie in Los Angeles. According to Jethro's Backyard's Instagram, the menu will center around burgers and cocktails. This may also be a beer garden. Trademark filings for the logo lists beer garden as one of the goods & services the business plans on providing. The estimated arrival of Jethro's Backyard is early 2023, according to the restaurant's Instagram bio. This should be a fun addition to Midtown. I'm looking forward to seeing the bar's design. 13. Photos of the Montrose outpost of Jeni's Splendid Ice at 1719 Westheimer Rd, Ste 100. The photos are from the linked Chron.com article.
  14. And to think Chron.com's food editor has been sitting on this news since it was brought to her attention in January. Nothing in the article offered details, only that Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is coming to Montrose which has been known on HAIF for 6 months. I found it odd that the article was published in the food section instead of the business section. The article was mostly about Old Blue House Antique former and new location, which is great, but very little substance about Jeni's.
  15. Spring Street Beer & Wine Garden closed June 19th. The bar & grill was located in the First Ward at 1920 Houston Ave. Taking over the space are the operators behind Pour Behavior and Lincoln Bar The new owners also operate Be More Pacific restaurant, Conservatory (the forthcoming franchised location at 55West), and operate a bar at Understory. The name of the new business will be announced in July.
  16. There is an Instagram account for Sushi by the Heights, a restaurant opening soon at 1111 Studewood St, Ste B. One post contains visuals of the restaurant's proposed design. Instagram: @sushibytheheights
  17. The name of the business taking over the former Indika restaurant space at 516 Westheimer has changed again. Instead of Black Orchid, it's now Crave. The concept is the same: restaurant and club/lounge, what's also been coined as "vibe dining" (i.e. Turkey Leg Hut, Taste, Bar 5015, Kiss, Parma, Lost & Found, Quotes, and Kamp)
  18. This is old news, but since no one posted an update in the thread about this: Mellow Mushroom closed its Houston location in the Heights (1919 N Shepherd Dr, Suite A) in 2021. Moving into the unit is local pizzeria Crust Pizza Co. The restaurant specializes in Chicago-style tavern pizzas (thin crust). CultureMap reported this last November: "Suburban favorite Crust Pizza Co. has leased the former Mellow Mushroom space at 1919 N. Shepherd Dr. in the Heights for a new location..." "The interior design calls for a full remodel with six, 80-inch TVs in the bar along with other TVs..." https://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/11-15-21-crust-pizza-co-new-location-the-heights-n-shepherd-drive/ Crust Pizza Co. initially anticipated a spring 2022 arrival, but that's come and gone. It's likely this could open by late summer or early fall of this year.
  19. A correction: The name of the dessert shop from Don Bowie (Taste and Rare restaurants) is pronounced Sugar Fork (may also be spelled that way, though the business' social media accounts spell it as Sugar Frk. This is opening soon at Post Midtown Square, 314 Gray St. The unit was previously home to Fluff Bake Bar before its relocation to the Heights.
  20. It looks as if Goode Company is opening its Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina restaurant concept at 1801 Yale St, the site that previously Down House. A few days ago, the restaurant was approved for a sign permit from the city. The name listed for the signage is Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina. Also there is a Google Maps listing for Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina at 1801 Yale St that is claimed and managed by Goode Company. https://goo.gl/maps/3Nuw6s9p53hgAVam9
  21. From yesterday's Openings & Closings round-up on Houston Press: "Sonoma Wine Bar, 1223 W. 34th, is shooting to open at The Stomping Grounds in Garden Oaks in December 2022...In an email to the Houston Press [owner Farrah Cauley] said, "My vision for Stomping Grounds is modern, sophisticated and warm with lots of natural light and multiple patios." https://www.houstonpress.com/restaurants/sonomas-new-plans-soto-is-back-stm-closes-13615525 Non-popup ads link: https://www.houstonpress.com/houston/Print?oid=13615525
  22. @hindesky There is an existing topic for this property:
  23. Marketing materials for 1735 Westheimer Rd show surrounding businesses including the forthcoming wine bar and tapas restaurant chain Barcelona at 1731 Westheimer. The map indicates it's opening Fall 2022. It's possible the opening will be much later like early 2023 or early spring 2023.
  24. Marketing materials for 1735 Westheimer Rd show surrounding businesses including the forthcoming Montrose outpost of Jeni's Splendid Ice at 1719 Westheimer. The map indicates it's opening Summer 2022, but it probably won't open until fall 2022 or early 2023.
  25. Updated mock-up of the Salty and site plan for 1658 Westheimer Rd. Architectural drawings show a walk-up counter for the Salty for customers to place to-go orders.
