  1. Turning the thread to more pressing matters: will there be a dive burger joint in the lobby a la 'Le Parker Meridien' in Manhattan?
  2. Turquoise tiles would be interesting. They evoke an old-school Havana vibe for me (I think of "Godfather: Part II" for some reason).
  3. Given how quickly pre-sales occurred for the Arabella to permit a greenlight on construction for that, I would say there is good demand for condos that has not yet been met.
  4. A desire for one story living may help drive condo demand. A 3-4 story townhome is fine for younger families, but eventually the trudge up and down stairs is less appealing as one gets older.
  5. This reminds me of elements of 800 Bell, but manages to capture those with a slick, modern twist. A Midtown skyline might actually start to emerge (other than the singular HCC building) between this and the proposed 3003 Louisiana office building. The dream of having an interconnected skyline running from the Med Center to Downtown seems a lot closer now.
  6. A premium-concept HEB would do quite well, I think (a la Montrose or Buffalo Markets).
  7. More retail will be nice. A premium grocery store would work well for the Heights-area. Also, I still think the Inner Loop needs another movie theater.
  8. Forgot about them. Good catch. I have the West Gray cleaners nearby me--at San Jacinto and Wentworth.
  9. The pointy thingy (that's a technical term) on the top of the Astoria is pretty nicely visible from my office now and is easily distinguishable from the buildings around it. Boring projects tend to show their age after awhile. The Houstonian Hotel, the Spires, the Parklane, the Huntington, and the Bristol high rise in Uptown all scream generic late 70's/early 80's to me. Randall Davis' style has grown on me. His buildings have a unique signature that that makes them harder to place in any given development era.
  10. The graphics in the rendering were state of the art back in 1995. And yeah, these days "River Oaks" means anything between the West Loop, the Spur, the Soutwest Freeway, and Memorial.
  11. Carlos Correa hit two dingers last night in the win over the Diamondbacks. Gomez should provide an extra boost at CF once he settles down. The Astros lead the AL West right now. You know, just like we all said at the start of the season. ;-)
  12. Ty Lawson, assuming he can get his stuff together, should be a good offensive upgrade at Point Guard and provide a nice primary ball handler when Harden is out of the game. The West will be an even bigger death struggle this year.
  13. Wonder if we might see more of these. A lot of lots can squeeze in 4 town homes, but, with parking down below, might squeeze in a nice 5-6 story condo building with a single-floor condo. Square footage would not get lost to a mess of stairs with such a plan.
  14. I think this marks the first time I have ever heard of the light rail referred to as a 'tramway.' Not sure how I feel about it.
  15. Le Meridien is a premium brand with Starwood. I am not sure the hotel would pay the extra dollars to make a big push to be open by the Super Bowl given their marketing edge in being affiliated with a large, known hotel chain. Getting open by the Super Bowl would be far more important for something like the Alessandra, methinks, where a lesser known brand might really want the chance to highlight its amenities.
  16. Iranian production will be coming to the market soon with a lift of sanctions. The Saudis show no sign of slowing their oil production (and probably wouldn't want to benefit the Iranians anyways). The HQ move has been often discussed, but current leadership at Chevron has shown no desire to move from San Ramon. With profits falling and shareholders unhappy, Chevron leadership would have a harder time justifying this project right now. Two or three years from now we might see higher prices again (hopefully in response to more robust demand). And we also just might get new decisionmakers at the top of Chevron who might be more amenable to dumping the Bay Area.
  17. A lot less glass on the new rendering--reminds me of the change in design for the new trauma center by Memorial Hermann. It has a bit of the Lofts at the Ballpark vibe.
