  1. The Chron's pitiful obit is an example of how wanting news coverage is in America's 4th largest city. The guy was mayor during one of the most dramatic decades in this city's history and brought about enormous change that made Houston what is it today. If this was NYC, the Times would have had a four page spread with photos/videos etc... Five photos is all the Chronicle's editors could come up with?? The local TV stations are not much better.
  2. Christian's Tailgate is a good one. Cyclone Anayas is one as well. Both are in Midtown.
  3. The petition won't do a thing. Something I've learned along time ago is that when the powers-that-be decide on a course of action, that's what they will do. When the land that Astroworld grew in value, they sold it and tore it down. The same thing will happen to the dome. Investors do not leave money on the table for sentimental reasons...regardless of how many petitions get signed. It ain't fair but life just isn't fair.
  4. Here's the building from the top of the Humble Oil (now ExxonMobil) bld in 1963: And a blurry shot by my Grandfather:
  5. I did it for a year and a half back in 2005-06 and was one of the reasons why I left the company and found a better opportunity. While the idea having the days available while everyone else is working sounds cool, you have to keep in mind that you will be sleeping during that time. My shift was 7p to 7a and I went to sleep when I got home and woke up at 3-4p. I don't know how busy you're nite job will be but mine was not busy at all, thus, If I didn't get a good 'days' sleep I would have found it very tempting to sleep on the job. One of the cool things was that since there was no one around, I got alot of websurfing done. It was there that I discovered this forum in Sept '05 and spent many a night catching up on all the past postings! We also had flat panel screens so I was able to catch up on alot of DVD watching I think for a short period of time, the night shift is cool but it gets old real quick. Doing the time re-adjustment during the weekends is hell! Just my two-cents.
  6. Some slides my Dad took during the 60's of the Dome during it's glory days: Under Construction: 1st Exhibition game with the Yankees in April, 1965: In the Summer of 1968 (from Astroworld):
  7. Here's a slide that my Dad took during Christmas 1958:
  8. Actually that's the best time to go to the movies is on a weeknight. I live a few blocks from the Edwards on Weslayan @ 59 and walk over there at least once or twice a week to see something playing. I can't tell you how many times I've been the only one in the theater. It's like my own private home theater! I can't stand crowds...especially today's youth (and I'm only 35!) Last Friday nite I did a rare thing and went to a 10:30p showing of "Cloverfield." I got there half-hour early and the theater was already packed with young punks...all texting each other on their cell phones...which they continued to do during the film! It was a good reminder why I only go during the week. There are some who prefer to wait for the DVD but for some movies you need that "theater experience." Just my two-cents!
  9. One of the reasons why I've never wanted to work there....never wanted to have "BJ Services" listed on my resume. Had a girlfriend years ago that could have listed it!
  10. This "rebate" is nothing of the kind. It's an early refund check. I remember back in 2001, I got the $300 "rebate" during the summer then wind up paying $300 more at tax time the following year. It's a gimmick to show "how much they care" about the little guy.
  11. I correct myself. I just did a search and they now include this info. Why the hell didn't they do this last spring when I was looking? I'm still getting spam emails from the realitors I asked regarding what the maintence fees were for the condos they listed!
  12. I've always thought they needed to include the Maintience fees for their condo listings. Their mortage payment calculator is unrealistic without including this fee in the cost. According to my realitor, the info is there, it's just hidden from the ordinary user.
  13. I'm one of those aging gen-xers (just turned 35!), and I have found that the only way to communicate with the Gen Yers is by IM/txting and such...that's the way to reach them. It IS their social skills circa 2007. As they grow up they will continue to communcate in this way and the next gen will be worse...probably telepathy! Time marches on...it's the way of the world....us old fogeys in our 30's!
  14. I bought it yesterday and just finished reading it. It is a hilarious read with very informative opinions. They give very few high marks in the A thru B range so I'm going to try those resturants first. Highly recommend this book!
  15. For year's I've heard the rumor that when the Beltway was first designed, the county agreed to charge a toll until the bonds were paid off, then they would take away the tolls. Is there any truth to that? Just curious.....
  16. Our balconies are in better shape now. We have undergone some much needed rapairs to these 25 year-old buildings. We just had new roofs put on them this past fall and some of us went ahead and got new AC compressors (I replaced my whole unit).
  17. I'd give a shout out to "The Weslayan." on the 5100-5200 block of Weslayan @ 59. Great inner-loop location and quite as a church cemetary! I've been there since April and love the unit and location. One of its best features is the coverage garage parking. It's nice to be able to get in/out of your car without being in the elements. The location is great because it's one block from West U and a couple from Bellaire. This area will never go ghetto.
  18. I just bought a condo this past April and the advice that I heard repeately was to stick with the 2BR at a minimum because they are easier to sell. While I don't have any statistics to back that up, I urged to do this by everyone I talked to. I'm using mine as a computer/guest room. If you have guests, you will be thankful for the second BH as well. All condos have maintence fees and I noticed, during my searches, that the high-rises w/elevators seem to be in the $500+ range for the fees. The condos that look like apartments have fees around $150-$300 a month. This is something you need to consider when doing your budgeting. For some reason HAR.com doesn't make the maintence fees visible. When I did my browsing, I sent each realtor an email asking what the fee was.
  19. My Dad has been a part of the City of Houston VOLUNTEER PARKING ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM for the past two years. He has written hundreds of tickets. He does this several times a week...even before & after church! Great program for those retierees: City of Houston Volunteer Parking Enforcement Program
  20. The reason for this probably has to do with who can name a replacement. With Vitter, Lousiana had a Dem gov so she would have named a Dem replacement. With Larry Craig, the GOP has the Governor's seat, so there would not be a change in party affilation. That's why they called for Larry Craig to step down and didn't do the same with Vitter.
  21. At least when Clinton did it it was with an legal age woman!
  22. ...Then there was the influx of Katrina refugees..... The price of apartment rent was what finally convinced me to purchase a condo inner loop....no more driving 20 miles each way and I now have an investment....
  23. I went to that page and did the little wizard they had...the specs I put in matching what John Moore is offering comes out to a total of $4600 for just the parts....with me installing it myself...I can't even change my oil! If I do the $1000 discount (and pay of the credit quickly) it would run me about $5200...thus labor costing me about $600 I guess this sounds reasonable to me. The good news is that they arn't going to replace the roof in our building until six weeks from now so I've got some time. Also, Moore says they can finish the whole job in 6-8 hours.
  24. I was hoping to go with just a Condensor as the reason I'm doing so is to make use of the crane rental by the roofing company. The new refridgerant puts a new wrinkle into the mix and I don't want to make an investment in the old if they are phasing it out. I remember in the early 90's scrambling to find freon for my '82 Buick! I'm surprised the current cendensor on the roof has lasted this long...since '83. I figure by biting the bullet and having it all replaced now, I should be able to save on electric bills. Being on the third floor...heat rises...vaulted ceilings... I also have an attic as well. If I can take advantage of the lennonx promo then I should be able to knock off a grand from the price.
  25. I would assume they are replacing what needs to be replaced. That is something I'll ask. I don't think any of the duct work needs to be changed out or worked on. The quote is from John Moore so I figured they wen't a fly-by night company. Our Condo had put us in touch with a fellow that we could never get a hold of and had a yahoo.com address. That's when I decided to get my own HVAC person but use their crane. I've sent them that link and will take advantage of it. Thanks! The Lennox unit in question is a 2.5 ton and is a 15.70 SEER with 30,400 BTU. Are you saying that the $6000k price should include a crane rental? Should I get an itemized price list before I agree to the work?
