  1. If you can get the seller/bank to pay for the first year then it doesn't hurt to have (not costing you any $) I bought my first place last year and had the seller pay for the first year and I found the warranty to be worthless. I called them out on a couple of plumbing issues and the people they sent out were obviously low-bid contractors. They are getting paid a flat fee for the job so they have no incentive to spend any longer working your issue than they have to. I wound up calling a plumber directly and only paid a little over the Home Warranty service fee of $55 to have the issue fixed with one visit. That's a key point to remember, you are not only paying $300+ a year for the warranty, you also have to pay a service fee of $50+ for them to send someone out. If they have to replace something like an appliance or AC they will generally go with the cheapest unit that will probably cost you more in the long run in electricity bills. Since my first year warrenty is expiring soon, they want me to re-up....I won't. My advice is to take the $300+ and put it into a savings account to create a rainy day fund. You'll be earning interest on top of it rather than paying some warranty company. Think about it, if your AC goes out after 10 years, you'll have $3,000+ saved to get a new one.... Just my 2 cents.
  2. Here's a 2002 article from the Houston Chronicle about Riverside Terrece: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/busine...ds/1488322.html Later this month a DVD of the 1987 documentary, "This Is Our Home It Is Not For Sale", is coming out.
  3. I run several times a week around the perimeter of Rice University. I've always wondered if it were possible for the general public to access the stadium and run up/down the steps between the bleachers. I couldn't find a way to get in on Sunday. Does anyone know if this is possible?
  4. I would recommend John Moore. I had them completely replace my entire 25 year-old HVAC in my 3rd floor condo unit. The condensor was on the roof and they did a remarkable job! Our complex was having our roof replaced at the time and I took advantage of the crane the roofers were using. I like using established outfits like Moore because more than likely they will be here tomarrow. Our complex had recommended two independent contractors previously and both were flakes....couldn't get 'em on the phone! On a hunch I did what the radio commercials said and called John and got "More." They answered on the first ring!! My two cents.
  5. Looks like I don't have to make a choice now: Justice Dept Approves XM-Sirius Deal Mar 24 03:20 PM US/Eastern WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department approved Sirius Satellite Radio's $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio on Monday, saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers. The deal was approved despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry. [Edited by Editor for copyright reasons.]
  6. As one who laments losing 95.7 the Wave, which should I go with XM or Sirrius? Do they both have smooth jazz channels? If they merge, will the Sat radio I go with work with the new merged station? I have an ipod with 23,000 songs of every genre. I enjoyed listening to The Wave when I didn't want to fidget with it and also to be introduced to new artists like Candy Dulfer and Chris Botti. I would ask those who complain that smooth jazz is "elevator music" truly give it a try (start with Dulfer, Botti, and Dav Koz). You will find, that they are talented individuals and that this music really gets to you after a while. I too am a traditional jazz fan and admire artists such as Coltrane, Davis, and the like.
  7. My grandparents were married there back in 1930 or so. Our family used to go there on Easter Sunday in the 80's. Boy has that area changed since then!
  8. How did you take these photos? What kind of camera and/or technique?
  9. Chron.com article just answered my question: "Morris said the smooth-jazz format will return later this spring when KHJZ launches its HD Radio signal at 95.7-2 FM. She said Hot 95.7 launched without air personalities but hopes to fill the positions as soon as possible. Seven on-air personalities left the air with the Wave's demise."
  10. Is there not a smooth Jazz station on HD radio anymore?
  11. I remember that very well. I was nine at the time and experienced the same sort of evening. I remember my parents opening all the windows and doors of the house (we lived in Northwest Houston off of 290/Pinemont) so that the air pressure wouldn't build up. The next day (or maybe it was earlier that same day) at school we got word of another Tornado warning and we all piled into a windowless AV room next to our school library at St. Rose of Lima. 1983 was certainly a year of storms as Hurricane Alicia came thru on August 18th. I still remember the news coverage of that for weeks after. The police blocked off all the streets downtown because glass rained down from the tall skyscapers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Alicia Somebody needs to post video clips on the newscoverage to youtube!
  12. Ron was pushed....and I think Steve may have been as well. Both were still in their primes...
  13. What is it about Channel 13 that allows their people to stay on for many years? The rest of the stations seem to shuffle thru on-air talent on a regular basis. Dave Ward has outlasted Ron Stone by 16 years and Steve Smith for at least 10 or so.
  14. I had a good experience with John Moore when they installed my new HVAC in October....
  15. Isn't there neighborhood deed restrictions that prevent ugly houses like this being built? Something like being totally out of character for the rest of the neighborhood? Good lord....
  16. I've seen every Oscar's telecast since 1977....and I'm 35! Wouldn't miss it for the world. I've got several on tape.
  17. I've got photos and videos of the snowfall on December 19th 1989. First time I can remember it sticking to the cement!
  18. ....and 1970's teen heart-throb Tony DeFranco from "The DeFranco Family" is also in real estate: http://www.tonydefranco.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeFranco_Family
  19. I rememeber it quite well. It premired in July of '85 and only lasted about a year as I recall. It was called "TV5" For a 12 year-old without cable like me it was great to finally see what my friends were talking about with MTV. This was the 2nd "new" TV station I remember. The first was "20 Vision" in 1984. The main thing they broadcast each evening was "Hawaii Five-0" reruns! Sometime thereafter Channel 67 started up...but soon replaced its lineup with the "Home Shopping Channel."
  20. My experience has been that those with just certs are looked down upon. No matter what your degree is, going through four years or more of college involves a great deal of learning how write and think in a logical & critical way. This is something that employers are frequently looking for and a degree is a verifiable way to tell them you went through this "rigorous process." Many certs are just proof that you passed a test. Employers are afraid of getting burned on people like these. I've had a discussion with many recruiters and one of the key thing they look for is those with a college degree. It helps them whittle down the hundreds of resumes they receive. It's also used as a basis for salary negotiations.
  21. Although there is always anecdotal evidence of someone who becomes a success without a degree, as a whole, those with degrees earn far more than those that don't. Many studies like the one linked below prove this. This is not to say that this is fair or that those without degrees are not as smart, it's just that's the way it's worked out. I've known many talented people over my career without degrees that found themselves at a disadvantage. I've seen them get passed over and over for promotions because they didn't have that "piece of paper." I've also met more than my share of individuals with advanced degrees that couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. They usually go on to executive leadership http://www.azcentral.com/families/educatio...efits19-ON.html I remember in college there were a few opportunites for me to quit like some of my friends did. I kept at it and it led me to the success I now have today. My friends have not been so lucky. It's a cliche, but my advice has always been to stay in school.
  22. Hate to disagree with ya there bud, but my Dad was pretty specific when he wrote this information on his boxes of slides. Also, here is a link to the covrage of that first game. It started at 2:35. I would have to think that was PM and not Am: http://www.astrosdaily.com/history/19650409/
