  1. If you're not aware, I posted photos of this building under construction here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...8&hl=Humble+Oil My grandfather worked for Humble starting in 1927 until he died in Nov 1972, about a month after they changed to Exxon.
  2. Check out housingmaps.com it links craigslist and googlemaps. Great way to search via visual location.
  3. Uh...that's because this is 2005 and not 1991....there is a time and a season.....
  4. The "Polk" sign is also visible in the photo as well. It would make sense that this would be Main and Polk because that is alos the intersection of the original Humble Oil bld. Most likely my father took the photo because my grandfather worked for Humble. He was probably waiting for him to get out of the office and took this as an opportunity to take a few night shots. Yesterday, I took the liberty of taking a few up-to-date photos of the same areas. Main and Polk
  5. My dad was pretty accurate with dates and the date in question is Christmas 1958. He wrote that on the box and the slide has an imprint of Jan -1959
  6. You are correct they are all slides. Most if not all had not be seen in 40 years. My dad had them all in those Argus slide cubes rather than the circular Kodak machine. His slide projector broke many years ago so they were in storage since. Regretfully, I did not find about about the Nikon Ice technology until well after I scanned them in 2002. I used a Minolta Dimage slide scanner to scan them and used adobe photo shop to do auto color balence on them. It took me three hours a night for four months to scan them and do not look forward to repeating the process. Perhaps as the technology gets even better and the prices come down I will attempt to scan them again. My Dad has always been a rather cheap bastard so I was pleasently surprised when I found he used ALL color film from 1956-79. There was not one B&W slide in the bunch!
  7. I should put together an album. I'll look into it.
  8. In the long run, you're better off getting your degree. It's a sad fact of business but there is a glass ceiling for people that don't have college degrees. There are exceptions, yes. Everybody has a brother-in-law who "is the president of his company with a high school diploma." Most times, however, companies will pass over talented individuals with out degrees for those that do. It's not fair but that's life. Many's the dot-commer who quit college and now lives with his folks...
  9. I don't have any of the JFK appearence, but I do have Nixon's 1960 visit:
  10. LBJ in the 1960 campaign....downtown Houston
  11. Some more that my Dad took with his Argus C3 camera: Original Humble Oil Bld:
  12. Since the cars are traveling both ways, I would guess Main st.
  13. My father is proud of stating that he was at the last Colt 45's game in Jeppeson stadium, the first Astros game in the Dome, the last Astro's game in the Dome and the first Astro's game in Enron field. He went to tons of games with his Dad (a friend of Hoffeinze) between 1965-72 and to this day is a season ticket holder in his retirement years. He took all the photos I've posted.
  14. My grandfather worked for the Humble Oil Co from 1927-1972. He worked for them in Longview, TX until 1960 when they transfered him to Houston. His son, my dad, took these photos of the Humble Oil Bld construction on 800 Bell between 1960-1963. http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6172/6006024ao.th.jpg http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/6543/6006032fa.th.jpg Notice the downtown YMCA in the background: http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/3769/6006048ed.th.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6830/6006054sd.th.jpg http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/7524/6006063di.th.jpg http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/8422/6006085yc.th.jpg http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/9129/6104184az.th.jpg
  15. I'm not sure. I figured he shot it from a plane...probabably Continental. Speaking of which, here's a photo of my grandparents departing a Continental flight back in '62:
  16. Below are a few slides that my Dad took of the construction of the Astrodome: http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5035/6104124jm.th.jpg http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/3115/6104134zj.th.jpg http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/1955/6210097mt.th.jpg http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1613/6310012ur.th.jpg http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/2447/6310028wj.th.jpg
  17. Here are a couple of photos that my Dad shot in the early 60's:
