  1. It's a three floor building and I'm on the third floor. I'm replacing the air handler as the new compressor uses the new refridgerant (R-410a). The old Refridgerant is being phased out and I'm being told that both components need to be changed because of this. Regarding quotes, who should I request them from? Do you have any suggestions? My problem is that there is not a "Blue Book" source of HVAC components such as Compressors, Air Handlers...etc....I have no way to judge is this Lennox XC15 Compressor priced competively.
  2. I live at The Weslayan Condos off of 59/Weslayan. They are in the process of replacing the roof for the first time since it was constructed ('82-83). They offered us the use of the crane that they will use to lift our AC compressors to install new ones. My compressor is on the roof and is an original unit from 1982. My condo is on the 3rd floor (the highest) and is a 2b2b @ 1263 sq. I had an HVAC contractor come out and he gave me the following quote for $6250: We propose the following scope of work at the above referenced address. Dave Lennox Signature
  3. This discussion reminds me of the joke that Chris Rock used to say: "In each town there are two malls; the white mall and the mall whites 'used' to go to."
  4. Been watching it since the Labor Day marathon. Excellent show as well as an great period piece. The problem with such shows is that they start out keeping the look authentic but slowly retreat the longer they are on the air. This happened to such shows such as "Happy Days", "The Wonder Years," and "Lavern & Shirly." Heck, it even happend to "Crime Story"....the pilot was great but the series faltered. Just look at the later seasons of "Happy Days." Most of the cast quit using Bryllcreem and began sporting late 70's era hairstyles...for a show set in the late 50's! On "Mad Men" I'm really enjoying the different work ethic....smoking & drinking in the office....what a life! That's a question for you "experienced" workers out there....was it really like that in the office? Josh
  5. Metro wants to track ridership specific for rail. The only way they can do this is to have people purchase tickets on a per day/ride basis. Of course I frequently ride it downtown and vary rarely see some of the riff-raff buy tickets before they board.
  6. I solved the problem easily...I moved to just inside the loop off of 59/Weslayan. My commute to downtown in the morning is 10 mins and my commute home is the same. If in the event my job location changes, I'm centrally located so any commute would be against the flow.
  7. I'm voting that I love it. Of course, I'm biased due to family attachment. My Grandfather worked for the Humble Oil Co from 1927 until his death in 1972. Most of that time was in Longview, TX. In 1960, he relocated to Houston at the same time they constructed their new HQ. These are photos that my Grandfather and my Dad (his son) took during that time: Photos of the Humble Bldg Constuction
  8. Has anyone considered a fundraising drive to buy the River Oaks/Alabama Theaters from Weingarten outright? These little protests/boycotts/meetings/delicate flower sessions are not doing a thing. Seems to me the only thing that Weingarten understands is money (not an unreasonable thought from a corporate standpoint). Purchasing the theaters would prevent them from being demolished. Yo, Carolyn Farb, rather than stand there and complain, get some of your fellow rich folks in River Oaks and buy the place! Put your money where your mouth is. The boycott thing ain't going to work. Watch "You've Got Mail" as an example of that.
  9. I highly recommend Dev Nandlel. He really did a thorough job on my home inspection in April. He's a true professional who helped me save a ton on my closing costs with the seller. His contact info is: Dev Nandlal A&K Real Estate Services, Inc. 10. The best place is The House of Pies (or Guys) on Kirby & Alabama. Their waffle platter is to die for! Great people watching as well.
  11. I had never seen this old photo of the shopping center. If anyone else has any photos of the River Oaks, they should post them here.
  12. Here's a photo of Mayor Cutrer taken by my dad when LBJ came to town during the 1960 campaign. I've also attached a few other photos from the event: LBJ's 1960 Visit to Houston
  13. There was also a Wyatt's on 43rd street & Ella. There was a Weingarten's across the street. Both closed sometime in the late 80's early 90's.
  14. Looks like they are just about to demolish the north side of the River Oaks Shopping Center. I walked around it today and saw work crews pulling up pipe and constucting a fence around the complex. For posterty, I took these photos yesterday so that we can remember it the way it was. Why they couldn't just turn the existing structure into a BN I have no idea. The River Oaks Shopping Center on August 3, 2007
  15. Just behind the bar wall is the guest bathroom so there is access to plumbing...
  16. I'm moving into a condo at the end of the month and would like to turn a shelving area in the living room into a wet bar. Probably would like a mirror in the back and a light up top as well as a sink. Any suggestions on who could do a job like this and about what a ballpark figure it would cost? Here's a photo of what it looks like now:
  17. I have a couple of upholstery couches from Ikea that I'm pulling out of climate-controlled storage. I would like to know of a good service that cleans couches. I don't want to spend too much money or it would just make better sense to buy new. Do you know of any of these services? Thanks Josh
  18. Thanks for the replies. What's the average rate for a condo maintence fee in Houston? The mortage calculator on sites like har.com ignore this key financial data.
  19. I was checking out har.com and found several condos in the $40-70k range at THE SUSSEX highrise on 7520 Hornwood Dr near Sharpstown mall off of 59. Does anyone know if this is a nice condo complex to live in? What about the area of town? Along the same lines, anyone have any thoughts of 2016 Main in Downtown? I'm looking for a purchase a condo but I would like to keep the price under 80k if possible. Does anyone know where I could get info on maintience fees for condos in Houston? Har does not list them. Thanks Josh
  20. But if you look at the same set of slides from above, there is a Billboard in the photo of the old Humble Oil Building with an ad for a 1959 Buick. In the same cube of slides is a photo of my Grandfather and his mother. She died in the sprint of 1959.
