  1. Last I heard (about 6-9 months ago) that project was on hold indefinitely due to being over-budget. I might try e-mailing the MMD to see if anything has changed.
  2. Dirt is being moved on the lot down a block and across the street from this site (directly across from Weights & Measures). It's been used for an art installation for the past year or two, so I have no idea who owns the lot or what they might be doing. Anyone have insight?
  3. They had an open house party last night and you'll never guess who showed up... a train... that blocked Sampson Street for the entire hour-ish I was there. Still a good turnout though, and I was told that they are already 50% leased.
  4. I did some digging: http://www.khou.com/news/local/exclusive-look-inside-dangerous-vacant-downtown-hotel/456536135
  5. Most of the windows appear to be removed from the south side of the building. I haven't seen it from the north, but I would imagine those are gone too due to how clear it is looking through.
  6. Variance request for building encroachment into 3 of 4 visibility triangles was approved at the Planning Commission meeting on July 27th. https://houstontx.swagit.com/play/07272017-713
  7. Based on some of the progress pics, it also features a subterranean drainage system that connects directly to the sewer. Fancy, indeed.
  8. I saw them taking down the back part between the auto shop and larger building on Friday. There were also guys repaying the soffit and roof of the space next to the dance studio on the corner. Seems promising.
  9. I saw something awhile back about a group trying to make this area a quiet zone, but it doesn't seem like any progress is being made toward achieving that goal. There is no way someone could live here and get a full night's sleep.
  10. I find it fitting that this development, on Gillette Street, seems to have taken inspiration from a stack of razors. Well done.
  11. Just in case you guys have forgotten that the webcam exists: https://blogs.uh.edu/infotech/services/webcam/ftpractice/video.mjpg?resolution=704x480&dummy=1491223168750
  12. Finally got around to taking the drone around the site. Sorry the video is so short. I know the developers transferred ownership of the streets to the city, but security guy said I was trespassing on private property. Didn't want to piss him off because this is a fun place to fly.
  13. Sorry for the lack of photographic evidence, but there is a VERY LARGE hole on this site. Like half a block by half a block by 10 feet deep large. Quite the progress since I drove by a week ago.
  14. I really thought they were going to wait to try to assemble the whole block, but I'm glad this is moving forward. This area needs a shot in the arm, which hopefully this development and ATMA across the street will provide. Fingers crossed for GFR!!!
  15. Machinery is on site and dirt is being turned.
  16. "Can't cross over" was referring to cars. You can walk over at the Drew intersection, as shown in this pre-Camden/Superblock Park GoogleMaps picture:
  17. You can't cross over the rail line at this location and the blocks running parallel on either side aren't one way... so I don't see abandonment as a huge issue.
  18. I noticed someone demo-ed the whole block a couple streets away from the lofts. Anyone know what's going in?
  19. I have a feeling the drone is going to want to have a look at this...
  20. They had the option to put retail, office, or housing units on the ground floor. It appears they believe retail is the most marketable.
  21. I really appreciate mixed use developments like this. Most places in Houston are developed for arrive/buy/depart mentality. Even if you think the structure itself is ugly, you have to admit that Mid Main is turning into a destination where even a it's-too-hot-to-walk Houstonian may take the time to explore the area. And to think that the same developer owns most of the property in the immediate area... I can't wait to see what else they have planned.
  22. View of Discovery Green from the 2nd floor balcony at Biggio's. We didn't try the food, but the old-fashioneds are tasty.
