J Money
Maybe not so baby... if it gets built, then it looks like it would be a 12 story podium with ~40 floors above. That could make it comparable to 609 main in height. IF the one on the right got built as shown, it would be edging into supertall territory. I don’t know anything about this project, and don’t know how much those models accurately reflect what TAMU has planned for the site.

Popular Post texan
Here is the latest Texas A&M Board of Regents agenda packet with some big implications for the rest of this property. $625,000,000 public-private partnership. I know hospitals are expensive but even for a hospital that much money has to build a pretty massive building. http://assets.system.tamus.edu/files/bor/pdf/AgendaArchive/2019-08Reg/RegBinder2019-08.pdf 12
TheSirDingle
Seems like the design we saw isn't to theoretical, and might be close to the final design? If both of these get built, it will drastically change the TMC skyline. Just an absolute insane amount of money being shelled out on this product.

texan
2 hours ago, htownbro said: If TAMU is involved then I'm sure it will come to fruition. I would definitely put my money on it happening. The TAMU System has been aggressively working over the past few years to expand its reach and has been very good at achieving that (winning the contract to manage Los Alamos National Lab, bringing the Army Futures Command central testing hub to campus, getting the Legislature to give it control of the Texas Division of Emergency Management). The “new” A&M System loves big, bold projects. What’s more is that this is a public-private partnership which will generate revenue for the A&M System. One of the most notable PPPs A&M has done is Park West, a 3400 bed student housing complex, it was built for about $245 million and annually generates $20 million for TAMU (projected total return to TAMU of $600 million over the 32 year agreement). In all likelihood, the Holcombe project should be very similar to this and A&M’s other PPPs, opening up ridiculously vast resources for TAMU to further invest in the Health Science Center and TMC. If you simply scale the ROI for Park West up to this project’s initial value (which is a terrible way of projecting the ROI for this project because it doesn’t account for differing agreements, higher value of land in the TMC than College Station, etc), you get a return of $1.53 billion which would very easily fund some health projects TAMU wants to pursue although even this project alone would be a game changer for the TMC.

Highrise Tower
Texas A&M University awarded $2.5 million grant to establish Academy of Physician Scientists https://www.tmc.edu/news/2019/08/texas-am-university-awarded-2-5-million-grant-to-establish-academy-of-physician-scientists/ Quote Texas A&M University has been selected as one of 10 degree-granting institutions to receive a $2.5 million Burroughs Wellcome Fund Physician-Scientist Institutional Award. The five-year grant will help establish an Academy of Physician Scientists, which will provide advanced, intensely mentored training for medical students and residents who are interested in pursuing a career in academic research focused on engineering. The academy will be a collaboration between the Texas A&M College of Medicine, Texas A&M College of Engineering, Houston Methodist Hospital and the Texas Medical Center. “It’s designed to help catalyze innovative approaches to establishing effective pipelines for training and preparing physicians to enter productive academic research careers,” said David P. Huston, M.D., professor, associate dean and director of the Clinical Science and Translational Research Institute of the Texas A&M College of Medicine. Huston will be the principle investigator for the grant and director of the Academy of Physician Scientists. The academy will complement Texas A&M’s recently launched EnMed program, which combines engineering and medicine into a discipline with the opportunity to simultaneously earn both an M.D. and an M.S. in engineering, as well as their MD Plus and MD/PhD graduate programs. But what sets it apart is that it is primarily for medical students and physician residents who didn’t necessarily set out aiming for a career in research. “The real impetus behind this grant is the national recognition that most physicians, if they enter into an academic research career, they may not enter medical school thinking that’s what they want to do, but they get turned on to it in the course of their medical school training, or later on during their residency training,” Huston said. “Currently, there is no well-designed mechanism for those individuals to really get the mentored training and guidance and expertise to enable them to have the best chance at success. This is an effort to recognize that need, and it is designed to catalyze innovative strategies to increase the bandwidth of this pipeline of physician scientists.” The grant begins September 1, 2019, and the university already is working to identify competitive candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply for the first class. Huston said the academy will take five medical students annually for a one-year opportunity of in-depth mentored research and training, which will take place between their third and fourth years of medical school. Five additional individuals will be selected each year for a two-year training and mentorship program during their clinical residencies.

Urbannizer
Do you guys prefer the previous look? First line from the article is incorrect, they've kept the shades. https://kinder.rice.edu/urbanedge/2019/09/17/houston-buildings-worth-preserving-according-local-architects-preservationists Quote In contrast, there is the Fannin State Bank Building, which had similar sun-shades on the side, but recent construction removed them. "That's another Arthur Jones building," Koush said. "They're re-skinning it and kind of changing its appearance from what it was originally." "At least it's not being knocked down, but they are drastically changing its original character," he said.
