Does anyone have a good idea of what Rice Village used to be like before its current incarnation as a more upscale place with chains and quirky boutiques? The closest I've found is a long-standing bead shop that closed a few years back (along with the late Variety Fair, and a head shop called "The Rat Hole"). Was it more of a counter-cultural store collection, or more of just a ramshackle bunch of businesses that congregate around universities and aim for the college student demographic? Or both?

With Ethan Allen moving out which took up almost if not all the entire top level of this building...what is to become of this space and/or building? (*The new Ethan Allen location in Uptown Park opened this past weekend on Nov 23rd) At first I thought this would mean perhaps a new start for this corner but noticed a Vision Corner or similar place moving in downstairs... It made me think then, what would be a good business to move in upstairs in the old HUGE Ethan Allen place? Maybe something like a Lucky Strike or Pinstripes? Or???

I've always wanted to create this thread but never have. Has anyone ever shopped for their designer furniture at Roch Bobis? While located at 4810 San Felipe Street, I've passed by it a thousand times but never went inside. When will this small retail building be demolished for something taller? This is prime Uptown real estate! I'm the parcel can contain something that would be a higher density use.

Does anyone go to CM’s Hatch Chili Festival, or anyone else’s? This is the first year we have done so. Hatch peppers only come out once a year for about two weeks at the end of August. We normally buy about 15 or so pounds of them and roast them on the grill. This year we bought a whole case, and CM roasted them on the spot in a large drum with a propane burner. I love Hatch peppers, and Michelle makes a great Green Chili Stew with them. It is chock full of melt-your-mouth goodness! Any other Hatch lovers out there. Anyone going to Central Market this weekend, or next?

Found this incredible Alfred C. Finn building that was built in Downtown in the 1920s. I searched and found only a single mention of Haverty some 16 years ago. Thought I would share my findings and information. From the newspaper The Houston Post dated October 30, 1921. Havery Furniture Co. to Have New 6-Story Home Work will start at once on big structure on Travis Street. Work will start immediately on a six-story concrete structure to be erected in between Capitol and Rusk avenues on the east side of Fannin street. When completed, the building will be the new home of the Haverty Furniture company. The announcement was made Saturday by J.J. Haverty, president of the company. The new building will be of the most modern constriction in every respect. Its dimensions will be 50x125 feet. The front of the structure will be finished in tapestry brick. The contract for the work has been awarded to the American Construction Company and the building is designed by Alfred C. Finn, a local architect. The total cost of the property and the building complete will be approximately $200,000. Top: Left- J.J. Haverty, president of the Haverty Furniture Company. Right- Fred T. Smith, manager of the Haverty Furniture Company store in Houston. Bottom- Architect's drawing of the new home of the Haverty Furniture Company.

Anyone remember Palm Center, the FIRST mall in Houston? It was at South Park (now MLK) and Griggs. I remember there was a Penney's there as the main anchor. A grocery store was the other main anchor. This was built in the early 50's. Across the street was Loma Linda Mexican Restaurant which was basically the only Mexican Restaurant in the area. Hard to believe but i didn't like Mexican food back then and i always ate the children's plate, which was turkey and french fries. I think they "sold" it to the current owners on Telephone.

Looks like this would go on the block between W 13th and W 14th in that it shows Dorothy St. on the east side of the property. That looks to be the only spot where this would fit as the Tortilla Factory apartments and the storage place occupy most of the N. Shep frontage on the other blocks. All the other blocks have residential lots all along the Dorothy side. Of course, these are just assumptions. No independent knowledge other than the attached plans.

Just read an article that all of the Pig Stands have closed?!?! It said the store in Houston and Beaumont and all the ones in San Antonio. That really sucks.

Been in Houston a lot recently and a vacant lot that looks like it used to be a restaurant has captured my attention. The building was razed sometime around 2007, and attempts to find an address or the name of this have been elusive. The biggest clue left behind is a large sign that is only partially blacked out ("J***'s") but other than that, I got nothing. Makes me wonder if it closed LONG before it was demolished. https://www.google.com/maps/@29.7452381,-95.4566661,3a,75y,49.4h,101.37t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s0ttV4oF1bS5wuhThn1wA5A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Finally they are going to tear down the strip shopping center on W. 43rd at Ella and re-build. This center has been mostly vacant and an eyesore for many years. Word is tenants just found out last week that they have to be out by March. Owner says it will be a year before new center is ready for move in. This leaves the few tenants there in a fix. Radio Shack is moving inventory to their W 34th St. location. The 99 cent store has reduced prices to 89 cents (hurry in for your big savings). Hallmark is probably getting the hardest hit. They have been in this center for at least 20 years and had the nicest spot. They are hoping to relocate in N. Shephard. I feel bad for the business owners but I am thrilled that they are finally doing something. Maybe we can get some good retail to come into the hood.
