  1. We have a much nicer nightime/daytime view of the downtown skyline from our 2nd story since Ike de-capitated most of the trees on the East Side of downtown.
  2. There is a website. Maybe it can divulge. Does seem to have that modern 50's look. http://www.stvincentcatholicchurch.org/
  3. There is a fundraiser of sorts for the family tonight at Post Oak Grill in Uptown. Here is an excerpt from the invite: We will accept donations for the Koonce family. Mr. Koonce was employee at the famed Brennan's restuarant that burned to the ground during IKE. Father and 4 year old daughter were burned very badly and have been sent to burn centers in San Antonio and California. Post Oak Grill located at 1415 S Post Oak Lane. Today 5:30 to 8:00PM
  4. Park Place is only a few exits off 45 from where we are. Part of it is right next to the bayou and most of it is low lying and flat with numerous large old assortment of trees. Our mom over in Broadmoor, is leaving along with sis in law to another family home in Beechnut/Cook Road area. Not sure if thats going to do any good but at least they are away from the areas near Gulfgate which are going to be closer to the worse section of EE near ship channel. I would hate to leave any senior citizen alone (sorry wngs I dont mean to add stress to the situation) but they tend to stress out even more. Mom had a stroke once and doctors say these kinds of events can be very hard on them. We are making damned sure she is taking all of her medicines with her. She will be with several others when it comes. Makes me feel a tad better. Sort of... but we are running out of time.
  5. Big oak & china berry trees. When Alicia came in 83 was it? Many of the big oaks around Broadmoor came crashing down, lifting slabs of sidewalk up at angles and of course practically blocking off all incoming/outgoing traffic from some spots. Eastwood has so many large old trees. Be very careful.
  6. Friendswood/Clear Lake: Most of my coworkers that live around the areas surrounding Baybrook Mall are not coming to work today. Most have already made reservations at inland Houston hotels/motels.. For those unfamiliar with the Baybrook Mall area, it is very low lying. Nearby Friendswood had a serious flood event a few years ago. Even Sagemont was ravaged quite badly. I cannot believe people in Pasadena and South Houston are staying at home? Extremely low lying. Pasadena! You need to chime in with latest word in your area!
  7. Sunnyland/Lawndale/Wayside/45: After seeing the most recent turn of events this morn early 6:00am we are boarding up in Sunnyland or nabe surrounding JP Henderson Elementary. May not stay in this house since the wooded area of the Convent could become a battering ram not to mention the gusts that will pass down as we are in an very open area. Dumble/45 area: or rather Broadmoor area: Possibly staying in moms house built circa 1937 but also boarding as when Rita almost hit so did all of her next door neigbors. Most of these houses have very dramatic high roof pitch as in Tudor style so we are even boarding up the air vents on top. Most of the garages in this area are old and may not hold up so where to park cars? No choice. We plan to ride it out in the main hallway (center of home) parking my car right up against the house the closer the better. Sunnyland carport (& elderly neighbors) will fly away I'm afraid. Hopefully not into our homes. Time is running out. I plan to stay sober during these kind of events, got to keep alert. Unless it becomes to the point of... then slamnming down a few.
  8. CONROE or The Woodlands: I am hoping someone enters data here for all to see. I have family in Conroe and there are hundreds of pines around. Strong winds are supposed to reach that far? Yelp! Advice enter here______________
  9. Everyone make sure you have a camera ready to take very important pics before and after! I recall in Allison not having film for the old camera, luckily the neighbor across the street was out snapping away at the ocean before us. Additional note all: The East End of Houston or East of downtown is where you do not want to be in this sort of event. We are like a freaking buffer/battering ram as forecasted maps indicate. Hope we all dont come floating your way West or North. The ship channel just too close for comfort I'm afraid. Santo cielo!
  10. Yes, fantastic idea! Is this kind of like what you mean? We do not plan to leave unless forced to by law. We are in the Sunnyland area or rather 45/Wayside Idylwood area if anyone needs help.
  11. You guys are lucky you got to see this mysterious place. We used to also sneak into old abandoned big houses (human curiosity) but wouldnt advise now of of course. I learned a big lesson when going into a large old one on our side of town. It was pitch black inside and I hit my face hard on the newel post of the staircase. I saw birds circling round like in the toons. lol and you are right this forum can be a real scream. Tell all your pals about it!
  12. So this is where the name Tellepsen came from??? The new Downtown Y, which is expected to break ground next year just around the corner from the existing building, will be named the Tellepsen Family YMCA, officials said today. The Tellepsens, a Houston family in the construction business for almost a century, have been involved in different leadership roles within the YMCA of Greater Houston for generations. The family has made an undisclosed donation to the downtown project. The Tellepsen company also will be general contractor. "This is a family gift. We are so proud to have it named after such a revered family," said Clark Baker, president and chief executive of the YMCA of Greater Houston. more here: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/5991712.html
  13. Finally dug through the 80's garb ie; shirts/pants Labeled names are Cotler and Bugle Boy pants and the Duran, Duran shirts have Paul Davlis - Paris on them. Certain I bought at some very retro store in the Galleria, like on 2 level facing South. The store also had cool leather belts with spikes, Billy Idol fingerless gloves, and of course those very expensive Adam Ant boots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugle_Boy
  14. That does it! When I get home I am going into the archived 80's New Wave threads look at each label and then report back. For most going out stuff I had to get whatever looked as clsoe as the group Duran Duran and for the concert dressed look, down were t-shirts from Warehouse Records and Tapes & Sound Warehouse and Soundwaves on Broadway! Here are some samples... (still miraculously have the 52's T-shirt)
  15. This guy must have really LOVED the dome. http://www.charlieanderson.com/astrodome.htm and who is that on the right? Old Willie himself (minus the doobie)
  16. Just got back last week via Continental took 2 carryons and that was it. No checked luggage so not fees, not yet anyway. Was surprised to get a lunch so we all devoured it before they yanked the sadnwiches out of our hands, throw us against cabin door, etc.
  17. That jetpack would be great to use in Houston rush hours. Here is an early baseball pic...notice Gulf Logos in background...cool.
  18. Correct, it was stated in a past theaters website, we always assumed it was named for a B actor named Don Gordon but that seemed unlikely especially if not a well known celeb. I was somewhat fortunate to visit some of our last great movie palaces here in Houston as a child. We all have our distinct memories of them. I remember the stage lights dimming and red velvet curtains slowly opening to the sides. Everyone hurrying to be seated while the ushers sat people down holding flashlights. The nice crushed swirling velvet carpetting. The theaters seemed cavernous too. The balcony was always a mystery as most times it was roped off with those neat red velvet roped off roles w/brass. There was always that space between the entry from the concessions that had port holes where you could stand tippy toe and see the film on the screen. By the mid to late 60's we kids only wanted to see giant monster films and they seemed as big as life on the big wide Cinemascope/Cinerama screens. The sound of Godzilla was as reall as can be. Even waiting outside under the flickering marquee lights was fun and you always got to see the posters of the upcoming films on the outside poster glass casings. Fun, fun days. We thought those 1940/50's theaters were beautiful but mom always said they were nothing compared to the older ones in our very own downtown Houston! The Metropolitan/ Lowe's State, etc. They were palaces.
  19. The Oak Tree! What! It was very popular too. Had stuff like this...oh God its the 80's again. They also had plenty of Top Gun movie attire, bomber jackets, parachute pants galore.
  20. No trains that I recall at Miller's Outpost. There was one at the Galleria and I normally went to the new one at Almeda Mall or at least it was across the street from there. Always had my fav Ocean Pacific t-shirts, footwear, etc. Evens sold Tropical Blend suntan to give it that tropical effect. Only thing missing was a Pina Colada. Fun days. The store looked like this I am almost certain:
  21. Is it really true that names like Al Ray and Don Gordon were named after specific film actors? Notice most of our theaters were either named after the neighborhoods or a person? I still wonder about names like The Azteca but I do nto think it was named after the diversity of the area. I mean there were names of theaters in LA like The Egyptian and I am sure there were not a bunch of Egyptian's strolling around the hood.
  22. I had been speaking to tmariar briefly of ideas to help. Now that I am back I can focus. Get me some blank spaced out layered forms for signatures and I will get down and get plenty of sig's. You would be surprised how "willing" some can be after a few cold ones. Whatever it takes! Something simple like this (minus the martini)
  23. The Wild Pair for the latest in Billy Idol or Adam Ant shoes. Our girlfriend's wanted us to look as close to these guys as possible. The girls (we all knew anyway) wanted to either be Joan Jett look-a-likes or the Cindi Lauper/Valley Girl look.
