Specwriter Posted April 15, 2024 Posted April 15, 2024 Just because UST takes possession of the building does not mean it will never be available to the general public. It could be a lecture or recital hall for public events. There are other possibilities I am sure. It may be better if Mayor Whitmire is able to follow through on keeping the building as an asset of the City of Houston but only if the City properly maintains it. Could we be looking at another public/private partnership with a maintenance endowment? It certainly seems to be working well for Hermann Park. 1 Quote

Whitmire hopes to keep Montrose branch library building open (houstonlanding.org) Yes it's very interesting... a Houston Landing reporter discovered a clause in the deed "When the late Houston developer John Hansen donated the church sanctuary to the city in 1986, a clause was inserted into the gift deed claiming that if the church property is not used as a library for more than 30 consecutive days, the clause could be enforced to transfer ownership of the library building from the city to the University of St. Thomas, Gordon reports." Miraculously the city reversed course on the library's closure... 3 Quote
trymahjong Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 It’s puzzling that the current Mayor seems to want to assert so much authority upon Montrose? I am so disappointed he is trying to ax the New library at Montrose collective. 1 Quote
Houston19514 Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 While I liked the new library plan in the Collective, I never liked the plan to move out of the current facility. It is a beautiful building in an awesome location. Shame on the past library/city administrations for failing to maintain it. 2 Quote
trymahjong Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Of course the building is beautiful. St Thomas University has plans for it I’m sure. The new library had an outside deck up in tree tops— I was charmed by that notion. 3 Quote
trymahjong Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 The Mayor issued statement that new library has no elevator? who screens his public rants? Of course there is a new elevator and no it didn’t cost $4 million to install. 4 Quote

trymahjong Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 I’ve been listening to several council meetings…. I ‘m not sure but I think this might have been when Whitmire tried to push back at that Montrose Commons president who tried to point out the plus side of continuing with the new library at Montrose Commons. The proposed building was open and we stepped in- the elevator is visible once you step inside— this leaves me to believe the Mayor never did an onsite visit. 4 Quote
