Many of the older Vietnamese immigrants are not fully assimilated to the western way-of-life. They have grown more isolated from society in their own homes. The goal of Mai Gia Thon is to build a community for older Vietnamese with shared cultural values and a support system for their well-beings. The villagers are encouraged to get out and interact with their neighbors. The main activity of the inhabitants is walking. The master plan of Mai Gia Thon centers around a network of pedestrian walkways that connects communal spaces together: Vegetable gardens, sunken plazas and a wide promenade are all designed to promote an outdoor “village” life style that is healthy, physically and emotionally. The site for Mai Gia Thon is next to the one of Brays Bayou drainage tributary. Much of the site is in the 500-year flood plain. The goals of the development is to build in a sustainable way that would help mitigate the flooding problems of Houston and reduce the energy consumption for the complexes. Vegetable gardens and plazas are sunken to retain water during heavy rains to mitigate flooding. Promenade is lowered to increase the capacity of the bayou. Now if we could just figure out a way to get lifetime locals to connect with other locals and try to enjoy their environment (and life), rather than being hold up in their airtight homes, watch nothing but trash and news, being convinced by social media that the other people, and the world, are things to be feared. I think the idea here is to build a community where the residents can connect with each other in their own language and culture rather than with the outside world. EDIT: Honestly @Urbannizer with this being such a big development that has multiple midrise apartments and clusters of townhomes, wouldn't this be in "Going Up"? That's what I concluded as well, though I wonder if they are really going to purchase and tear down the church or if they took a little license with the site rendering. bobruss Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 I think this is a much needed project that addresses several issues. It's hopefully going to provide low cost housing for the seniors. I think it's a great plan to create a community for these elderly Vietnames who will surely enjoy a close network of friends and a means of exercising. Social relations helps keep the elderly healthier. It make great sense. This will open up some housing in areas where they currently reside. I think they considered a lot of issues. The one thing that gives me concern is the fact that they're building a senior citizens residential enclave in the Brays Bayou 500 year flood plain. I hope they have planned for evacuations. Some seniors aren't capable of getting out as quickly as others. All in all, I think this project is a good idea. I just wish it wasn't in the flood plain. Self segregation will always be a choice that some want to make. If its a choice then its fine, but if its from top down then its wrong, and/or if done for arbitrary reasons. rechlin Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 The title of this thread is a bit misleading by saying it's in Bellaire. It seems that it's actually in Alief. Not only is it not anywhere near the city of Bellaire, but it's a full quarter of a mile from even the street of Bellaire Boulevard. Could we get that corrected?
