Movie Scores and Soundtracks

Been listening to a lot of film scores the past couple of days (especially Hans Zimmer!) Now I'm not talking about soundtracks....ok soundtracks are accepted lol *changes topic title*

 

What are some of your favorite movie soundtracks or scores?

 

What are some of your fav composers?

 

What are scores/soundtracks that when you listen to them they instantly teleport you to that particular world?

 

Any scores that maybe others don't know about that you think should be given more of a spotlight?

 

Just curious what everyones thoughts are.

That's an incredible film! More people should see that one. Still very relevant to today and its held up pretty well.

For full orchestral... Inception, and Last Samurai are two goto favorites.

Last of the Mohcians, Gettysburg, Terminator Theme as performed by the Cincinatti Pops. Concerto de Aranjuez ( the brass version from Brassed Off)

 

For more piano-centric... Favorite is Legend of 1900.  Love Actually, Truman show, The Piano,  Goodbye Lenin and Ameilie by Yann Tiersen

 

For composers.. in addition to Zimmer.. Look up Michael Giachino (lots of Pixar)  and Thomas Newman (Road to Perdition, American Beauty, Cinderella Man, Wall-E)

You probably hear something by them every other time you go to the movies and don't realize it.. they are 'The Trailer music' company.   Pull up a youtube playlist and sit back for a few days listening to this... you'll be ready to conquer the world.

The Plastic Bag Theme from American Beauty is so cool.  If you like that also listen to "Spiegel im Spiegel" which has been in a number of soundtracks, most recently "Gravity".  Stunningly moving.  

 

Just over the weekend I was listening to The Hours by Philip Glass, of whom I never tire.  

 

Another favorite is Vertigo by Bernard Herrmann.  I first picked that one up on the recommendation of a long-gone HAIFer, Vertigo58.

Christopher Doyle's position as one of the all-time great cinematographers is secure based on the films he did with Wong Kar-Wai. Few DPs have ever had a run of such great films as he did in the 1990s.  

 

I have the limited-edition soundtrack to ITMFL that was released in HK when the film came out - it's a CD but comes packaged in an LP-sized gatefold with foldout art from the film. The soundtrack to ASHES OF TIME is also highly recommended.

Spiegel im Spiegel...  I knew the name, but don't believe I'd heard it before..   On now and very nice.

 

I don't want to deviate from scores and soundtracks too much.....  but Chopin's 'Raindrop"...

First heard it in the amazing Halo 3 mega commerical "Believe"....  incredibly moving piece, incredible commerical... and I'll forever associate it with Halo.

 

Also..  speaking of Halo. Martin O'Donnell has done all those soundtracks and some of thoese are every bit as amazing as what you find at the movies.

I will second your Dave Grusin..  and I'll submit anything by Henri Mancini for the "oldies but goodies" class of composers.

The Fountain.

Muriel's Wedding (did a far better job at incorporating only Abba songs into a movie without making it a musical like Mamma Mia which is a horrible movie).

I second Laurence of Arabia Luminaire.

The first and second Matrix.

Star Wars Trilogy.

Spice World. Go ahead and laugh it up.

I'm not afraid to say the South Park movie's sound track comes on when I have shuffle on. I really liked it when it first came out. Maybe it was because of the vulgarity and curse words? The songs are catchy.

Also the Resident Evil Movie. The first one. I think I really like every single song.

There's a few more but those are off of the top of my head.

my appreciation of soundtracks really only includes soundtracks that rely heavily on electronic music, which seems weird when I think about it.

spawn (this one especially is interesting as each song is redone with the help of a different contributor usually from a different genre of music)

 

 

there's really only 3 scores that really stand out to me, and they're all John Williams, that guy has an ability to create sounds that heighten the scene without even being noticed.

star wars (3 original films)

jaws (only the original)

raiders of the lost arc (really just that one)

 

a special mention for 1941, I think the march that was scored for that is just so fun to listen to. anyone who hasn't seen this film, it was a huge cast, but it flopped in theaters, but it's still a funny film that everyone should watch once.

The Sound of Music.

 

Maybe I'm thinking about this sideways, but I generally don't consider musicals when I'm thinking about soundtracks/film scores.

 

Where a soundtrack/film score enhance the movie you're watching, a musical is built around the music.

 

If we're to include musicals though...

The theme to Forrest Gump is a classic too, of course. I would agree, it has to be scores or soundtracks, and not musicals. Otherwise, the whole album of "The Wall" qualifies, which was also a movie (the album lacks the disturbing imagery of the movie, if the movie turns you off)
