IronTiger
Since the holidays are coming up, thought'd I ask your opinion on it.Personally, I can eat a slice of it, but not much beyond that. Certainly not a whole thing.
lockmat
I don't think I've ever had fruit cake.
cottonmather0
Then neither of you have had the Collin Street Bakery version. It's very rich and hard to eat a lot of, but not because it's bad. It is actually very very tasty. http://www.collinstreet.com/pages/deluxe_fruitcake
crunchtastic
Count me in as a fruitcake lover. I like the really dark ones made with lots of molasses and heavily spiced.
Dan the Man
I like fruitcakes, but not the people to whom that term applies.

KimberlySayWhat
I don't care for them, but I haven't eaten too many of them in my lifetime. Maybe I should give it another try.

I could never stand fruitcake until, in a fit of nostalgia for things my Mother loved, I ordered one one year. The key is the ingredients, especially those pecans, and how many of them they are. They're good enough by themselves to make you ignore all the candied fruit, which I still don't care for very much.
crunchtastic
West Indians make outstanding fruitcake. Jamaica, BVI, St Kitts--the best fruitcake I've ever had was from the Caribbean. Hmm, where the fruit and sugar is! Except it wasn't a Christmas-only thing. They have versions of it year round.
RedScare
My dad loves to tell the story of when he was stationed overseas during World War II. My grandmother sent him a fruitcake for Christmas. Wartime mail to the troops being what it was, it took awhile for the fruitcake to arrive, and when it did, it was hard as a rock. My dad did not want to toss such a valuable gift from home, so he decided to soften it up by pouring brandy on it, thinking the liquid would soften it up. He poured a little at a time so the cake would soak it up and not fall apart. After a month or two of this, he and his fellow pilots cut up the now soft fruitcake and ate it. He swears he woke up the next day with his worst hangover of the war.
20thStDad
I don't think I've ever seen one in person, only pictures. So to me they are but a mythical, evil omen.
houstonmacbro
Some are very good. Most are horridly bad.I think the good ones do not have too much bad fruit. By bad, I mean, the fruit seems to have been soaked in vinegar or something because the whole cake tastes like that. As with anything, better ingredients mean a better product. crunchtastic
Another funny fruitcake story. A friend of mine did pottery as a hobby, and one year for Christmas presents for his oddball friends, he made glazed clay doorstops designed to look like fruitcakes. TJones
It makes the perfect doorstop. Wait, ok crunch, this is getting scary. We are obviously on the same wavelength because you beat me to it again. DARN YOU OLD CLICHES, DARN YOU TO HECK ! cottonmather0
For those of you who have never tried it before, if you've had banana bread or raisin bread, it's very much like that consistency, only a little bit spicier and with a ginger and clove flavor and lots of pecans. The glazed fruity candy stuff is pretty good too, kind of like raisins or cherries in a pie. I was never a fan until I tried the version I linked to above - there really is a difference. A small slice eaten slowly with a cup of strong coffee is DELICIOUS. BryanS
...any food item that you can leave out, eat a little of it... and then eat some more of it, the following year... the same item... and you don't notice one bit of difference - and mold won't grow on it... no thank you. who knows what that is going to do to your insides.
