  1. Fleeting, like many fads.  I think it was really only popular for a decade or so, from the early 1950s to 1960s.  The post-modernism of the 1980s and brutalism of the 1970s also had short shelf lives.

I just dug up some old photos, and when I get the chance I'm going to do a post on Houston's historic turquoise buildings.

Oooooh I'm looking forward to your turquoise post!!!

  2. Interesting, I was looking for information on Magnolia Macaroni/Vincenzo (aka Charles) Lucia and ended up at this ancient post! His macaroni factory was on W. Dallas (San Felipe back then) and House St. - House St. is now about where the parking lot is just east of I-45 along Dallas - it was two blocks east of Heiner St. He lived almost next door to the factory at the west corner of the block.

He died in 1927 but Magnolia kept on until about the early 1950s - shortly thereafter the factory was demolished and Magnolia and anything about it pretty much disappeared as far as I can tell.

  3. Well, it's that time of year: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/news/2014/10/the_girl_on_the_torture_board_rhonda_williams_opens_up_for_the_first_time_about_dean_corll.php

The Girl on the Torture Board: Rhonda Williams Opens Up About Being Attacked by Dean Corll

She wakes up to a sharp pain in her side -- someone kicking her, telling her to wake up, bitch.

For a moment, she thinks it's her dad. Then she opens her eyes and sees it's Dean Corll, the electrician who's renting this house in Pasadena. She looks over and sees her friend Wayne Henley handcuffed, his feet bound, his mouth duct-taped. She looks to the other side, and there's the boy Tim she hadn't met until the night before, when she escaped from her father's home in the Heights. He's tied and taped, too.

  4. Ooops! I missed the San Antonio mention

fwiw -  the stores in the Houston picture were Kress, Spiegel women's clothing (later Darling Shops), Baker's Shoes, Lady Oris Hosiery, The Good Friend's Shop (women's clothing), Grants, Bert's, and then not seen, but JC Penney on the closest corner.

  5. 2015 S-Class coupe, for the independently wealthy among you.  I read that it has optional crystal headlights.

    Gah..

"For the customer who might feel as though this car doesn’t grab enough eyeballs, the brand offers an enhanced version of full-LED headlights that are accentuated by 47 cut-glass elements supplied by the Austrian company Swarovski. The lighting units house 30 crystals that serve as turn indicators, while the other 17 combine to make up the daytime running lights."
