  1. "[Outgoing Mexican President Vicente Fox] calls the fence "shameful" and compares it to the Berlin Wall." i see that...scary and of course the guest worker program is stuck (somewhere) in lovely congress and...err...you might wanna edit the title of this thread
  2. well, chron.com's search engine is dead, but i pulled this from another search - i'll post the chron link later, if possible: City renames Dunlavy Park for Ervan Chew Houston Chronicle February 28, 2000 Author: CARLOS BYARS; Staff Estimated printed pages: 2 Dunlavy Park in southwest Houston has been renamed in honor of Ervan Chew, a man considered by many to be an outstanding volunteer and a notable member of Houston's Chinese American community. Chew died in January 1999 after a brief illness. He was 42. A wet, chilly morning failed to dampen the spirits of the large group of friends who attended Saturday's renaming ceremony and witness the unveiling of a new marker identifying the playground and baseball field at 4502 Dunlavy as Ervan Chew Park. The park was acquired in 1945 and, like the street, named for Herbert D. Dunlavy, who was killed in World War I. _________________________ also: http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/doggiepark.html Ervan Chew, located at 4502 Dunlavy (Key Map 492Z), was the first neighborhood park in Houston to allow dogs to legally run free, off-leash in a designated dog zone.
  3. hakeem's track record isn't pretty - plus, he lives across the globe now, and i have little faith that he really gives a damn (i love to be proven wrong, though!). it is already on the national register...there is no additional city ordinance that could help
  4. so this will be on the south side of richmond on the west corner of wakeforest? what is there now - i can't recall (although it doesn't strike me as something too large). all i know is that levy park is a little bit behind it.
  5. great pictures - i found it randomly on a road trip, as well! as you approach mineral wells, all you see in the sky is the enormous hotel! i know there were efforts to revitalize it, and there were fundraisers and tours scheduled when i was there (from postings in the windows) - did it look like anything had been going on there recently? there is also a lot of folklore associated with it: http://www.spiritofthebaker.com/ http://www.texasescapes.com/TexasPanhandle...HotelGhosts.htm i took some really neat pictures of the inside - it certainly was a fancy hotel! ____________________ also, having been to the arlington in hot springs, they are mighty alike (fortunately the arlington is still in business, though - and i didn't run into any apparitions while staying there, either!)
  6. yeah - that was covered a few posts up...
  7. i agree - i spent a bit of time in the neighborhood growing up, and it was beautiful. it is losing it as time goes on.
  8. i don't have much hope for this one - here is the national register listing: http://atlas.thc.state.tx.us/common/viewfo...&class=2001 yay for townhomes, cvs's and chick fil-a's
  9. no! don't delete! the other thread doesn't have links to any articles like yours does
  10. argh, here's the hate part of the love/hate relationship i have with this city and its developers (and business owners) here's the existing thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=8297
  11. yeah, who knows - the reason i was mentioning that hcad was wrong was if the building was in fact demolished and then rebuilt (as a fiesta or whatever...). if that happened, then the date shouldn't be 1931, but the date the new building was built (the way hcad has things listed). and unfortunately, my directory doesn't list store numbers
  12. so then the hcad record for 1100 quitman (listed as a grocery store) built in 1931 is completely wrong? (not that they are right about things very often...!)
  13. oh yeah! there's one (kind of broken up) on the northwest corner of westheimer and dunlavy
  14. demolition permits have been issued for the buildings - just a matter of time now
  15. i was just waiting for you to post it - i was starting to get worried!
  16. yay for early voting! thanks for posting the information. the league of women voters has links to their non-partisan voting guide, available for harris county (english and spanish) and ft. bend county: http://www.lwvhouston.org/ ("voter's guide" link on the left menu)
  17. well, 1100 quitman is still owned by weingarten (realty) according to hcad, with it listing the year built as 1931... i can't for the life of me picture it now, but this is the aerial of the address:

  19. that link is dead, anyhow...
  20. well, to me, those "contemporized bungalows" look alot more at home crammed on an 8,000 square foot lot in bellaire, than amidst the height's bungalows...
  21. forget the landscaping - what about that house! apparently, it is a pyramid builder's home (http://www.pyramidbuildersinc.com/aboutus.html) who "established itself as a renovator of vintage style homes in the Houston Heights, a historical district. With a portfolio of 25 elegantly designed, contemporized, bungalow houses-each built as a speculative project-the Pyramid Builder's classic signature is visible all over the Heights."
  22. it's been going on for a while...this is probably the permit (notice the owner ) funny enough, the hcad record shows a different owner, and that it was a warehouse c. 1935 Project No: 06078759 Date: 9/15/2006 USE: DEMO BLD/SEWER DISC Owner / Occupant: MERIT PARKING Job Address: 1404 LEELAND ST Tax ID: 0400020640000018 Buyer: AARON RAMIREZ Address: 10500 TELEPHONE RD 77017 Phone: 7139910480
  23. every type has its bad points and lemons, whether it looks like a hearse or an overdone pimp's car
