  2. christmas is...funny. i usually buy gifts year round, depending on what, when, and where i see something. christmas sure is an interesting human science experiment, though
  3. i wonder if any of the bob bailey photos are of the capitol room...some photos do not include detailed information: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/dmr_resul...ed&folder=9 of course, the capitol room might not have been around then, either
  4. should be close if not done - i was there last sunday and the main building was about a third gone - the inside atrium was really neat looking (and sad) with all the dust and dead plants
  5. Robert Everett Smith – Also known as R.E. (Bob) Smith (1894–1973.) He was an oilfield roughneck or warehouse worker for Humble, Gulf, and the Texas Company. Smith went into partnership with Claude Hamill, established a Houston headquarters in 1925. In 1935 he married Vivian Leatherberry, and they had two daughters. In the 1940s he bought out Hamill's interest, including thirty-six oil wells in the East Texas oilfield. He promoted the Harris County Domed Stadium, or Astrodome, and played a role in acquiring the Colt 45 major league baseball team. By 1964 Smith owned more land than any other person in Harris County, over 11,000 acres, where he raised Santa Gertrudis, Brahman, shorthorn, and Hereford cattle, as well as thoroughbreds and quarter horses. His success in oil, real estate, and cattle ranching led to an estimated fortune of $500 million. Smith served as president of the Petroleum Club in Houston and is credited in 1955 with establishing Houston's United Citizens Association, which ran Roy M. Hofheinz against Oscar F. Holcombe for mayor. http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online...s/SS/fsm57.html
  6. no #$%* - and that could include coffee! i have never been to the breakfast klub...doesn't sound so appealing
  7. foggers can be quite noxious/stinky - i have had a little luck with citronella, and i hear that using other oils like lemongrass, clove or geranium (not sure in what volume) might work. also, planting society garlic folklorically works, but i personally have never noticed it, and it does smell pretty bad
  8. i have been to tia maria's in baytown a couple times and was pleasantly surprised -
  9. some of it has to be an effect of Palmer Church's waystation project: http://www.palmerchurch.org/content.asp?Mo...play&id=168 it is a good service, but it only works for the AM hours
  10. so the deed has been done - 'course i'll be back to check on the santa rosa
  11. well, apparently his flamboyantly mauve ghost lives on there!

  17. i see what you mean, and i am not trying to be argumentative i have several more interior pictures of the hotel, and there are sometimes more or less (or no) orbs in the picture. i tried to account for dust, light, anything else, but something still wasn't adding up...
  18. i *think* that is the postcard i have - i'll check on that there were signs taped to some of the windows of the building referring to the hotel project, but they were at least a couple of years old. there is still a trailer on site (and someone in it i think), so who knows... otherwise, there has been little to no activity there
  19. there are some bob bailey texas co. pictures in a miscellaneous folder, but nothing too old: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/dmr_resul...ed&folder=1 i have an old postcard at home - i'll post it later ____________________ ooh - there is a neat picture of the construction of the melrose building - texaco, montagu and stowers are in the background: http://www.cah.utexas.edu/db/dmr/image_lgs...iable=e_bb_1349
  20. a refraction of what - the only light was the ambient light from the windows, which was extremely dim
  21. true, portland and houston are incredibly different and would probably be unfair to compare the two. i was in portland for about a week a few months back (stayed downtown) and managed to get around with no car very easily. the rail was extremely efficient and easy to take from the hotel to the airport. i took a taxi once, and walked everywhere else. the parks are great, and powell's is fantastic (but a little overwhelming )
  22. thanks...it's difficult to update, but i'm a tryin'
