  2. It's officially the end of a LONG era at NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston. Legendary NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston News Anchor Bill Balleza announced he will be retiring from the Houston NBC Station effective in January of 2020.

He began his journalism career as a TV Reporter for KRON-TV San Francisco, CA in 1971, before joining CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston in 1973. A graduate of San Antonio College, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War & also served as a Marine Scout Sniper during the Tet Offensive of 1968. He & his wife, Melissa have 3 children & 2 grandchildren. He's also an avid woodworker & has designed & built furniture, including for families that he & his NBC 2 colleagues sponsored for Houston Habitat for Humanity.

Thoughts on Balleza retiring & how do you think he'll be remembered ?

Started going downhill at KHOU when they had the big shakeup with Ron Trevino and Lily Jang and brought in the boss's husband. Then they fire Darby Douglas and bring in Stephanie Simmons. Have no idea why they let Darby go nor did Darby according to his FB page.  Then they bring in the comedian Chinedu Ogu which I find not funny at all just stupid. KHOU is definently worst of the 3 or 4 in the mornings now.

That so-called comedian Ogu is an IDIOT. I know that Lily has moved on from the TV Biz & is doing real estate stuff.

All in all, this is shaping up to be perhaps the least appealing assemblage of mayoral candidates Houston's seen in decades.

Things began to grossly go down hill big time at KHOU when Darby Douglas was fired from the station!!!!!!!!!  He and David Paul had a REAL magical connection and made the traffic and weather fun to watch.  Bad mistake!  Chita was added...she is ok but at times talks too much!  Then, Ron Trevino and Lisa Hernandez were heading the morning show!  KHOU has since added and removed various replacements but none have really worked!  Is there a message in that?????

Ron Trevino was moved to weekends, Lisa Hernandez recently took maternity leave and now she will comeback to weekends with Ron Trevino which is a great reunion but weekend news is probably the least watched!

Suggestion,  move Ron and Lisa back to weekdays Htown Rush, along with David Paul and Darby Douglas!  The ratings  will blow the roof off the new plaza building!

You don't think Xavier & Co., will last long ? Are you guessing 3 years or 5 years from now ?

  6. In case anybody else has been living under rocks during the Summer, TX Governor Greg Abbott (R) has pretty much all but announced his reelection campaign for a 3rd term in 2022, which means if he pulls this off, Abbott will become the Lone Star State's 2nd longest-serving TX Governor with 12 years in the TX Governor's Mansion by January 19th, 2027.

  7. Tom Koch & Melanie Lawson celebrated their 37 year anniversaries with Ch. 13, both beginning their careers with the Houston ABC O&O Station on September 17th, 1982.

Gina Gaston is celebrating 25 years with Ch. 13: beginning her first stint in 1992 as the Weekday Morning Anchor with Koch & later anchored with MSNBC NYC, NY St in 1999. She later returned to Ch. 13 in 2001, where she's been ever since.

Thoughts on Koch, Lawson & Gaston's respective anniversaries with Ch. 13 ?

  8. CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston has hired WCNC-TV Charlotte, NC Weekend News Anchor Xavier Walton as the TEGNA Station's new #HTownRush Morning Anchor.

"We are excited to have him on board," KHOU President & GM Robert Springer, told mikemcguff.com. Springer adds Walton wants to move to Houston, to not only report the news, but also to make it a better place to live through his community involvement.

With Walton taking over Weekday Mornings, current #HTownRush Weekday Morning News Anchor Lisa Hernandez is moved to the Weekend Evenings, where she will be doing weekend evening newscasts alongside Ron Trevino, who currently anchors the weekend evening timeslot alone. However, Trevino will continue to solo anchor the Saturday Morning News. Springer also told mikemcguff.com that the TEGNA Station is working to expand its weekend coverage with Hernandez's addition.

  9. In case you're living under a rock, longtime Houston Consumer Reporter Emily Akin has announced her retirement from FOX 26 KRIV-TV Houston & in her final days on the air, is using her 40+ years of journalistic experience to share her best tips with viewers. "But before I go, I want to leave Fox 26 Houston viewers with some final consumer advice," Akin posted on Facebook. "All this week I'll focus on issues you have asked me about the most."

Houston TV viewers first got to know Akin on NBC 2 KPRC-TV Houston in 1995 through segments like Akin's Army, Not On That Menu, & Good Housekeeping. Akin's Army was really an army..... an army of volunteers that helped consumers across the Space City. The consumer advocate left NBC 2 in 2005. After teaching at Houston Community College (including teaching at the University of Houston), she returned to Houston TV... this time at Fox 26 KRIV-TV Houston, continuing the tradition of helping viewers with Take It To Akin.

  11. Good Morning everyone. Unless you're living under a rock, looks like changes have taken place at Sports Radio 610 KILT-AM Houston...

Rich Lord, the station's longtime afternoon host of "The Triple Threat" was let go alongside Mike Meltzer of the Morning Show as Sports Radio 610 is making an attempt in boosting their flagging ratings, which had imploded since 2017.

    Here's the new line-up:

6:00 AM to 10:00 AM "Payne & Pendergast"

10:00 AM to 2:00 PM "In the Loop"

2:00 PM to 6:00 PM "Clint & Kamla"

6:00 PM to 7:00 PM "Texans All Access"

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM "The Six Pack with Matthew Jarecki"

9:00 PM to 11:00 PM "Matthew Jarecki"

Any thoughts on the new line-up at Sports Radio 610 KILT-AM Houston ?

  12. In what many considered as no surprise, Houston City Councilwoman At-Large 4 Amanda Edwards (D) declared her campaign for the United States Senate yesterday, jumping into what's likely to be considered a crowded Dem Primary with State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) likely to declare his US Senate campaign sometime this month. Edwards will finish out the remainder of her 1st 4-year term on the Houston City Council, which expires on January 2nd, 2020 & won't seek reelection to another 4 years to her At-Large City Council seat.

Thoughts on how Edwards (assuming she wins the Dem Primary) will do against United States Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), who'll be a strong favorite in his reelection bid for a 4th 6-year term in November 2020 ? Remember, Cornyn has been undefeated in every single election: Primaries, Runoffs & General Elections since 1984.

  13. In a surprise to nobody, former Houston City Councilwoman At-Large 2 Sue Lovell (D) jumped into the crowded campaign for Houston Mayor, some think she might take more progressive votes away from incumbent Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) in November. Any thoughts on how Lovell's entry will impact the overall contest ?

We still have the Weather Channel on in our workplace, but I've noticed another camera in use that they tend to pull from as of late. It is located Uptown, I think on the Sonesta at 610 near Westheimer. While I like seeing the Williams Tower at times as a reminder of home, there are definitely better vantage points of the city than toward that stretch of Post Oak.

    How's that going lately ?
