Despite the misleading formulas and such...it does the city no good to have these articles floating out there. Today it was a subheadline on msnbc.com...makes houston look bad.

I think the Paypal idea is a great one. You've created something that could morph into something MUCH bigger. It's not like you're going to raise tons of capital...but whatever you do raise, could be directed at an ad budget for radio or whatever. I think a simple ad in the Houston Press, 002 or comparable would generate a TON of traffic. The more participation you have from Houstonians, the more likely you hit the mark with folks in high offices in City Hall.... However, if you truly wish to remain architecture focussed, it's not the best route. I suspect that you didn't expect to be this sort of Houston compository of data...and were driving towards being more of an architecture meeting point. Either way, you've done a great job...you should invite the participation... I'm ready to commit dollars.

Houston once again has been named the fattest city in the country, according to Men's Fitness magazine, Local 2 reported Wednesday. It's the fourth time that the Bayou City has received the title. Last year, Houston was ranked second, behind Detroit. The 2005 rankings are as follows. Houston Philadelphia Detroit Memphis Chicago The magazine said one of the reasons Houston topped the list was because it has more fast food restaurants per capita than any other city in the country. Houston Mayor Bill White has big plans to move Houston off the fat list. He said our weather could be a big help to help the city shape up. "It's been in the 70s for the last two weeks. I work out year-round, as do a lot of other Houstonians. This is a great city for year-round weather," White said. The mayor will announce a physical fitness challenge Monday afternoon at City Hall. you took the words right out of my mouth...tilman is the next trump genre character and while he has tremendous focus and impact on houston, his activities are noted nationally...

Imagine where the McD's used to sit...it would have been 10 feet directly behind where the old structure stood. I'm also in a building neighboring the block and I can understand why this might be hard to believe given how it looks at the moment...but I can assure you that there was activity...or "activity" as you put it!

What brought you to Houston? I noticed that 'editor' mentioned in a nother thread that his/her move was in 1999...that's when I moved here as well. The strong IT industry of the late 90s moved me here...and much of my work was with the venerable Enron, who seemed to be the most outstanding organization in the world at that time. Over the past 6 years, I've lived in downtown and midtown and grown to appreciate the development in these areas. I'm contemplating a move back to the east coast - but the spoils of the cost of living in Houston are maintaining my footing for now. I've noteiced that the area where we live, midtown, has a ton of imports...both from domestic and international originations.

No, there was definitely activity there per my earlier posting. I was there was well on that day and saw the activity. I've got zero reason to exaggerate such an observation. Sorry...I just report it as I see it.

I too like the look/feel of the blog site. I understand your point re: anon bloggers...however, the reason I wished to remain anonymous leads back to my line of work. I'm in sales - and my client is frequently the City of Houston - I couldn't be clearly objective and critical in an open format unfortunately. I know this takes away from some of the credibility, but it's reality that i face nonetheless...

NWS has issued a 'winter weather warning' for the area...supposed to be like this through early in the morning. a white Christmas is all but guaranteed at this point....though i wouldn't expect to see any roads covered...

I drove by there this morning and saw clearly a truck with drilling equipment roughly in the same area where the McD's used to be. There was a ton of mud being pulled up... Seemed like they were pulling samples...just a guess.

So who's in? I'm glad to be a part of this...there is quite a bit of info that I'd like to dialog and investigate, and I suspect that this platform will give me the vehicle i'm looking for. I'll be noting a few blogs about midtown and downtown areas...frequency is likely to be once a week... Anyone else out there?

From a coffee standpoint, i'm actually quite happy with Tropioca. However, from a commercial validation standpoint, I'd like to see a Starbucks. You see all these Starbucks popping up all over the place and somehow Midtown doesn't have one (excpetion Randalls), and I'm curious as to why the market isn't attractive to them. I would consider it an 'indicator' of sorts... I like the coffee sure...but I'd like to see corporate America confident in this area.

Many of the new perry communities being built today and originally built on the east side of Main Street are indeed gated and don't have independent driveways and such. I should've been more clear - many GARAGES are behind the houses on the Perry's and as a result, it's easier to be 'hidden' if you're a thief. I know the Perry's on the west side of Main (i.e. near West Gray) are a different story...but aren't they technically outside the confines of Midtown? In any case - i'm not suggesting that it's so bad that you need to close your garage every second you walk in your house - I am suggesting using common sense. Don't leave valuable items on your driveway/patio; lock your doors; don't leave your garage open for extended periods - ISN'T THIS STANDARD PROCEDURE when living in the core of one of the largest cities in the country? Urban settings have this kind of petty activity - can't avoid it. On the other hand, how many home invasions and assaults have taken place in midtown? You seem to be griping a lot about the bums...and I can understand the frustration associated with dealing with these guys. But once again, you are in an urban setting in a neighborhood which is being revitalized. We knew what we were up against when we moved into our midtown townhome almost four years ago. But it is still frustrating and one must be patient.

I stand by the thought that Midtown is indeed getting better. The truth is that there are more homes being built and more people moving in...making for 'fresh pickin's'...i.e. everyone has a 'garage experience' before they learn how to protect themselves from it. Simply put, you can't leave your garage door open... Don't mistake the numbers of incidents to equate to worse conditions. This will be a trend that will continue. One of the contributing factors, imho, is that Perry Homes builds these gated areas which allow for some of these things to happen in a 'hidden' fashion. My garage comes out to the front of the street...so it's much more visible. Folks in the Perry's sometimes have a false sense of security being that they are behind these electronic gates...and leave their doors/garages open. In any case, use your head, LOCK UP. I also have lost plants and the like...and it SUCKS. Small price to pay for living in a region which could deliver big promise in the times to come. the plus i s that when i have bulk trash to throw out, i just put it on the driveway and someone takes it!!!
