  1. That's oh so Sand Lot-ish... "Smalls, you're killin' me!"
  2. There's construction going on right now but I can't remember what's going up first. Someone with a better memory than mine needs to identify it.
  3. Well, speaking of promoting downtown retail... I would imagine that if this is successful, it would be a big step and heating things back up. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/sto...25/daily57.html It'd be nice if they got crackin' on the Sakowitz Bldg. redevelopment, too.
  4. I wouldn't be surprised to see METRO weed out more of its articulated buses. For one, the fleet they have is pretty old, from what I understand, and two, parts for these buses aren't as readily available, making repairs fairly expensive relative to their other vehicles. I'd bet that METRO has a higher percentage of breakdowns with the articulated buses than their other vehicles. I know I see a greater number of broken down articulated buses on the HOV than I do their suburban MCI buses.
  5. I haven't had a good chopped beef sandwich in years. Also, did anyone here ever eat at Atchafalaya's? Not the classiest place but they had great cornbread. They also had a Chicken Tchoupitoulas that was great.
  6. Quite a few people would disagree. You'd be surprised just how much walking (and in a non-walking city at that) some people do during the summer. You may need to take some extra measures (bring a towelette with you, etc) but it can be done. I'm a fairly big guy and I often walk six to eight blocks downtown during the summer. It's not the most comfortable walk for sure but I've never been in a situation afterwards where I needed to change clothes or shower, so maybe it depends on the person.
  7. Stupid developers! At this rate, no one will be able to see the stars in the sky because of all the cranes going up all over town.
  8. As I said before, the building looks pretty good but, IMO, would look even better if they'd ease up on the glass facade. A bit TOO much glass. Outside of that, it would seem like a nice addition, even if it seems to sit a bit away from the rest of the skyline.
  9. If Wal Mart wants to make a splash in a new market, the area of Little York and the Eastex would seem to fit the bill... a good mix of middle income and lower income folks who don't have any other viable shopping options within five miles or so. But, yeah, the addition of Wal Mart will certainly inject some life into the Northline area. All that said, even without Wal Mart, Northline is essentially going to be the next in line of redeveloped malls into outdoor shopping districts, like Gulfgate and Meyerland before it. I'd expect Northwest Mall to go that route, too.
  10. I especially agree with the bolded part. The fundamental problem with almost all large school districts across the country is that families are losing confidence in them and they are electing to a.) move to the suburbs, b.) bite the bullet and enroll their kids in private schools, and/or c.) both a) and b.) The magnet program is like a hybrid of public and private school.
  11. Nevetheless, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the tunnels found their way to the Pavilliions, especially if, for example, the Sakowitz Building is finally redeveloped. While I agree with Red that it's not necessary, I often remind myself that this is Houston, and folks don't do things the ordinary, old fashion by-the-book way. It grates, it astounds and yet it also surprises in some good ways at times.
  12. It's a shame that we can't see any renderings of the clinic at this time. Obviously, design is a big concern with all new projects going up in Midtown. There hasn't been all that much lately to feel good about. Then again, you have to consider the tenants (Wachovia Bank, CVS, Walgreens, etc).
  13. That's it exactly! It has a cool and refreshing mod feel to it. Nothing to glitzy or pretentious and yet still clean looking.
  14. I agree with Mister X. The "projects" list is very convenient and helpful. Maybe eventually we can add a feature for entry that includes a thumbnail of how the project will look, like with the Park Tower or The Cosmopolitan.
  15. METRO will be introducing a Signature Service line in the coming weeks, similar to the METRO Rapid service in Los Angeles. The buses will be silver (or gray if you want). The buses will travel down Bellaire but in limited stops. Think of it as a new type of express service.
  16. I personally dislike the Exxon Tower. I've tried to like it, to appreciate it, but I can't. This Museum Tower being proposed has a better, fresher design, but even with that, the affect suggests a wee bit too much glass. I'd like to see the tower with a better mix of glass and conrete (maybe broader/heavier vertical exterior beams made of concrete).
  17. Just wait until they annex more land to the southwest heading towards Richmond on US 59. Telfair does potentially have an ideal location relative to everything in the Sugarland/NE Fortbend County area but it'll take it a while to mature. The lack of trees is an obvious drawback. It's very similar to the affect seen in parts of Round Rock and Frisco.
  18. I knew the Mavs were paying some of his salary but not that much. In fact, I can't imagine anyone signing him to such a contract paying him so much (obviously) back-ended money. He's a good shooter but at his age, he ain't worth half that.
  19. I agree with Mister X. The new renderings look awesome. I like the commercial component's design. Kind of an ode to the 70s but with a bit more flare and color. Very clean looking without looking cliche. And I also like the San Felipe frontage.
