  1. Oh, you tease, you! But yeah, your logic is sound. Always a good sign when it appears that a residential property is up for redevelopment and the previous tenants appear to be gone. It does seem to suggest that they're moving right along. Keep the fingers crossed!
  2. There are a couple of jokers on here who can't get out of Houston fast enough and can't be taken all that seriously. As for the poll question, I tend to think Uptown/Galleria before anywhere else, simply because of the current demographics and amenities.
  3. How can congestion at the I-10/610 junction be "improved" if the section just due west of it is still under construction? The bottlenecking on the off ramp of 610 north to 10 west is due primarily to the fact that the lanes merge from two to one, as they've not yet finished construction on those lanes as it heads towards the Silber exit. Nevertheless, as it stands now, the backup is pretty bad.
  4. The Westin Peachtree in Atlanta has an exterior elevator that takes you the top, where the Sundial restaurant also spins and gives panoramic views of the city. I hate that elevator, though. You always feel as if at any time you're going to free fall in HD clarity.
  5. I wonder if they're delaying construction until that section of the Katy Freeway is complete (they still need to finish the eastbound main, HOV and toll lanes plus reconstruct the feeder roads).
  6. You all know it doesn't take much to get my wheels turning concerning the West Building. Less talk, more redevelopment! And man! 92% Class A absorption for DT? The rents are going to be going through the roofs until some new space comes online.
  7. The meshing of ideas and theories is important as well. As 'Coog said, not everyone is 100% right or 100% wrong. Cities are indeed the longtime melting pots of varying sensibilities and interests, and longterm successful cities are likely to be able to bring these groups together in a meaningful way. For as great as San Francisco is in many respects, there are aspects of it that come across as cold and uninviting to certain sensibilites (forget about the cost of living). That can't always be ignored. Nor should a city like Houston ignore the need to invest in its core, in its infrastructure and all the "snazzy" things that may not always be practical but almost always invigorating. So we'll see how it works out!
  8. Agreed. I like the lobby in the Hyatt more than the lobby at the Westin Bonaventure in LA, even though both have similar design elements, right down to the bar.
  9. Subjective. It is what it is. I don't find much about Manhattan beautiful either but again... subjective. However, the "near" downtown part is hilarious. I suppose if you wanted to assume that Westchase was DT Houston, then yeah...
  10. I agree with Subdude in theory but as for his example, I don't particularly care for the Hearst Tower. The criss crossing lines actually take away from the shape of the building, IMO. Makes the facade look too busy and you end up getting distracted.
  11. Great pics all around, Boris, but those TMC photos were off the charts. I counted eight cranes in the TMC area alone. Schhhhhhweeeeet!!!
  12. So maybe in the vicinity of 30 stories, depending on how wide the building is?
  13. According to HPD statistics, the rate is down over the first five months of 2007 compared to last year. Apparently, there is some significant behind the influx of 150,000 or so people in the span of three or four days in 2005 plus the continued influx of immigrants from other countries at a rate of hundreds and even thousands per month. In the case of the former, a small but troublesome number of people were involved in drug wars that continued on in Houston after the storm hit while in with the latter, there is evidence of the same, only with international gang connections. Regardless, it's an ongoing problem, and even with a modicum of success, the overtime program has to be replaced by a significant increase in full-time officers. 4,900 uniformed officers are just not enough for a city of ~ 2.2 million people. Granted, the city is also patroled in sections by Harris County Sheriff's deputies and by the Constable but those two entities still don't patrol the city in the way that HPD officers would.
  14. Fascinating. I'm going to start a chart outlining all the inside info you've given us. This sounds pretty exciting. Of course, we won't be able to gauge the full impact of such a project until we see designs and stuff.
  15. It's not uncommon for some people to resort to extremism when pointing out a supposed flaw or when voicing disproval about a certain thing that bugs them personally. They may have the best intention but it is what it is. As it particularly relates to the internet, it's sometimes difficult to gauge the degree in which someone might exaggerate. In any case, we're here to review and discuss architecture as it relates to the built environment, and I wonder, just like with any new project, how this new project will relate to its surroundings. Sometimes, it doesn't appear that certain projects are well thought out from an asthetics standpoint. A good example is the Tremont Tower.
  16. I meant to ask this same question the other day. Thanks, Velvet, for bringing it up.
  17. I would imagine that this can only help promote the Ben Milam site for renovation purposes. It seems like a strong candidate for some residential or hotel redevelopment.
  18. I blame Bud Adams, Stagger Lee, Don Bebe, the officials in January 1980 and goofy Buddy Ryan deciding to stop blitzing in the second half in '93.
