  1. Turns out the animal who did this has an estranged ex-wife who lived with the murdered family at one point. What a shame. I always wonder how someone can have the malice in them to think of something like this, much less act on it!
  2. I would say that list is accurate, but America has a lot of interesting smaller sized cities and towns that Clemons omitted. San Antonio isn't as interesting as the other 3. If anything it has more "new fangled" touristy options than the others (Six Flags, Sea World.. etc).
  3. I noticed that on the Saturday after the 4th. I think they were testing the fire alarm system or something?
  4. Houston made a great effort for the 2012 Games. London won. That was before your time Luminare, you should take a look at all the literature Houston put out in anticipation for that, Kirksy had an Olympic Village (that looked bad - but was functional) based at UH. The post-Games aftermath would have left Houston transit, additional dormitories for the existing colleges, and lots of event space, but very little in the way of brand new stadiums/sports venues would have been needed. Houston actually had the most complete bid of any of those cities that went after the Olympics. I think the US Olympic committee was just nervous about getting another Sun Belt city an Olympic games. Houston is not 20 years away from being able to host the games. If anything the Olympic Games would be a huge benefit to us - as it would demand transit projects + a boom in construction for hotels/event spaces etc. Look what it did for Atlanta! They had Marta, but a much less developed freeway system, we're far behind in terms of rail transit, but as mentioned before Marta is not the "end all, be all" as far as transit systems go.
  5. I must admit - I'll always cheer for the teams that haven't won the cup. Countries that have won since the WC began: Uruguay (2 times) Brazil (5 times) England West Germany/Germany (3 times) Argentina (2 times) France Spain Italy (4 times) With Argentina vs Germany.... I wonder how many Mossad agents will be present?
  6. Of the "Old World Feel" I would rank: New Orleans on that list higher than just about any of those other cities, maybe also including Santa Fe, New Mexico? San Antonio has preserved what economic prosperity destroyed in Houston and Dallas - its original, old downtown. San Antonio has nice architecture, but like Austin very little of it is in highrises or similarly large scale buildings. The King William District, or the Alamo Heights area along Broadway are interesting.
  7. I'm not sure why people think this is a "supertall"? Doesn't that mean 300m +? In other words a building the size/height of JP Morgan Chase Tower? 1000' + in height? This thing appears to be about 50 floors tall (did a really rough count on two of the renderings). I'm betting 800-900' as shown with the crown. Even if this gets built and everything is only 20 floors tall, this will still be a very nice project for an area such as the TMC. And I think height for hospitals has been held at around 15-25 floors for cost purposes. But there is almost zero available land in the TMC left - at least the actual zoned TMC areas (which like Subdude I feel this is probably just outside of that area).
  8. If that tall building happens it will be like Transco was to Uptown - and still is. I'm still quite suspect... until I see some announcement about this happening I'm not holding my breath.
  9. Its a wonder taller buildings haven't happened all ready in the TMC. Not saying we should have a bunch of 50 story towers, but surprised the height hasn't been pushed upwards due to the density and lack of available land in the TMC proper.
  10. Now I can hear the music in my head... and I've now got a craving for Tex-Mex for dinner! My suggestion was going to the owners place of residence during their sleeping hours and playing loud music! Perhaps a little Slayer or Iron Maiden (since it was the 80s) would have persuaded your neighbor that mariachi music into the wee hours of the morning wasn't the best idea.
  11. I miss the old Continental lights... for more than one reason. A shame that airline is gone.
  12. This is way off topic here, but my wife enjoys that title. I have you to thank for that. Bravo.
  13. Haha! Sort of. Indeed the best horror movies are those where the villain or monster is unknown - a hidden menace - compared to some weird looking beast that eventually numbs your sense of dread for the protagonists.
  14. I hope the best teams play.
  15. I would be very surprised if that is a supertall. More likely an 800-900' building. Look no futher than Uptown for the extreme height differences between the Williams Tower and all the 20-30 floor buildings around it. Still quite interesting. Hopefully this has traction, but...well... back to being pessimistic Looks very conceptual. I like the pedestrian path that "spills" onto the bike/hike trail along the bayou.
  16. This is going to be a very big building! It would appear to be quite a bit taller than the former Continental Tower - which is around 740' tall. Probably will be the fourth tallest when completed in 2056.
  17. If it were me - I would hate having a loud neighbor like that. You can't put a price on peace and quiet. You just need to find where the owner lives, and then set up shop next door to him during the day and host a drum training studio or something similar.
  18. And yet we do. Or to Turkey, or India, or Vietnam... A great reason to love and enjoy Houston is the diversity. But I'm preaching to the choir here.
  19. People in general are quite ignorant (willfully I've found) of geography. So they picture Houston (and all of Texas) as a desert with cows and oil wells.
  20. If I remember correctly I recommended up a trustworthy craftsman from Galveston used to this sort of thing. You might call him if you still have any information I sent you about him from a few months ago.
  21. The man was a professor at TAMU, the truck ran a red light - not a blown tire - or rather the tire may have blown because he ran a red light. http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/EXCLUSIVE-Man-Gets-Video-of-College-Station-Crash-254474071.html
  22. Speaking about THIS posted topic -- back in 2005. Not his original join date for Version 1.0.
  23. I think that's all the pundits thinking Argentina is better than Holland - because they've won the cup before... but I think Holland has a better body of work, and have won against mostly better competition through the knockout and group stage (though Australia is a question mark). I'll admit this cup has featured me watching the least amount of games possible. I just really don't care this year. Even the US results didn't matter to me - I conceded defeat entering the cup, and the USMNT failing against Portugal to win outright = a very blase view of this whole event. And I enjoy soccer/futbol/whathaveyou.
