  1. If you ask me the Chronicle pre-Cohen was better. I can think that their best writers have left in the past 5+/- years... and honestly their best writers were sports writers (which again figures).

Well... women are "nearly" naked when in swimsuits far more so than most men (the above picture not withstanding). I guess it depends on the suburb or part of town as it could end up being target practice if he rang the wrong doorbell (and that can certainly be used as a double entendre ).
  3. Yes I figured as such. They should just charge and be done with it. Why have two e-format papers? Besides, if I were a prospective chronicle subscriber I may visit that free homepage first and decide it wasn't really worth it.
  4. Three Allen Center isn't an ugly building. It is purely geometric. Its also quite tall. I thought we like tall buildings in this forum simply because you know?
  5. It takes only 45 seconds of scanning the chron.com homepage to see just how shabby a paper it is. I mean "win a pizza date with JJ Watt" is one of the primary articles, or was yesterday! Of course the most clicked or read articles are usually also about the Texans, so... know thy audience.
  6. Or that! I almost typed that in my previous response... Of course that would be a great thing if it did happen.
  7. Yep. Transportation is very expensive! Clearly both sides have very opinionated people - nothing wrong with that - I'm one of them! We just need to remember that each side has valid points when discussing these items. Personally I'm intrigued by the proposed HSR between Houston and Dallas. If that is done properly it may spur on some interest in some well designed/run government funded rail options around? hopefully Frankly, I like the lightrail system *idea* that Metro has/is building. I can certainly see where some would wish the system was a little different. I think the idea that Metro took of "building the ribs FIRST, then adding the legs and spine to the system" was the right idea for a town like Houston. The people who really want rail mostly live inside the Loop (or that immediate area), and they'll use it! They can. The commuter/heavy rail options much later down the road will need to connect properly to the existing light rail system or the whole thing won't work very well. I've always been of the idea that we need rail alternatives; and believe that Houston would have a successful system realatively quickly. I am however, of the mindset that it *must* be done correctly and would rather we plan things well before moving dirt.
  8. There was (or still is) a McDonald's like that in the Chicago area. At least its retail over a freeway.
  9. How much do you think it will cost to add a second tier to an existing freeway system? Just curious. How much did the Katy Freeway expansion cost? Just curious. I don't mind driving, but if when I'm going to work I had the ability to read a book or surf the web or some other form then that would be great. I don't want to get into an argument about rail/freeways... the pro-roads people greatly outnumber the pro-alternative to driving everywhere crowd in this town. Not saying that it is a bad thing, just saying there are two sides to this conversation in this town of 6.3 million and both are QUITE opinionated. Personally I don't live or have to deal with anything in this particular area (Katy Freeway), though I would appreciate being able to take a train from say Baybrook to Katy Mills on occasion, or maybe to the Galleria or IAH? Driving is nice when you need to be flexible, but the other 95% of the time its confounding. And autonomous cars won't alleviate traffic - if a road can only handle 10,000 cars and there are 35,000 on it then the computer aided cars may help, but only to a point.
  10. Right, I never said rail isn't the end all, be all. In fact I've said as much in any of my transit posts on here. Semi-autonomous cars... so that's the answer? Computer controlled cars? That will be the end of congestion? Doubtful.
  11. What is the next steps for the Katy Freeway? What happens when that area adds another 500,000 people? Will we add more lanes? Will we add a doubledecker freeway above the current one? Also, other than the costs - what is the primary reason people loath rail transit? Do you like driving that much?
  12. ^agreed, but the Chronicle site won't likely stay empty for long. If anything I can see it being bought FOR a parking garage. Lots of workers in that immediate area and not too many good parking spots (compared to the central and southern parts of downtown).
  13. I still find this "area" nothing more than a real estate term. It is hardly a district. I guess it is good that the powers that be are trying to make it more of one?
  14. I've always wondered why Galveston doesn't have a nice big Marriott or Hyatt (style) resort on or near the beach somewhere? Granted that Galveston's beach and water aren't the most beautiful in the world, but then is Bastrop really that great? Surely Galveston draws WAY more tourists and people with the potential to spend big money than a Bastrop (Hyatt Lost Pines Resort) as an example. Currently I think only the San Louis is anything remotely like a "resort" As for hotels: -Would think 1-2 big name luxury types are on the edge about to announce a planned hotel in the Galleria area. -I'm surprised there isn't at least 1-2 more big hotels in the TMC - I know one is planned, but how many years has it been since something decent was built in this market? -I would also think another decent sized hotel could be supported in and around the MFAH and environs. It would draw people who wanted a quieter stay than Downtown and also guests for the TMC.
  15. This is not a new campus... This is an expanded campus, and if anything it is nothing more than a new building or two, or at the very least just a renovation of existing spaces for the old Houston Post site. Anyone want to raise their hands if they think this location is better for the propsed 40 floor Int'l Tower proposed by Stream/Essex (isn't that who is proposing that tower). And I'll bet Skanska is kicking themselves, this is probably a much easier demo than the Houston Club.
  16. Which "boom" would that be? If its the 1970s-1980s then this boom is a shell of that one... but if you're talking about the smaller booms of the 90s and early 2000s then this is a much bigger boom. That's just my observation.
  17. Got it. Thanks for clarifying. I had always assumed it was a single building that replaced any number of older buildings. If some developer can clean it up properly - could make for an interesting project. The old printing spaces on the north side of the building could presumably be replaced by a parking structure? Will have to see.
  18. I thought the *old* buildings were razed and a new 1960s style building built in their place? I swore that was something that happened? I mean, imagine the crazy floor plans of the current Chronicle building if it indeed includes 3 buildings, 1 of which was a former theatre. Subdude, is that right? Is the Chronicle Building hiding three old buildings, or were they demolished to make way for the larger building currently occupying that site?
  19. NOLA's Warehouse District *WAS* formerly a REALLY rough part of town. Its taken decades for it to get on track... Off topic I know, but just thought I'd add that.
  20. There are hike and bike trails everywhere, but the park still needs to be planned better. Connectivity issues are abundant, its not easy to park near the tennis courts and then stroll through the park to the sand volleyball courts. I'm done arguing to fence posts, you guys love Memorial Park without any further improvements that's fine. Bravo. I simply always want the best for Houston. And Memorial Park - while a big park and it does have "wild" areas - is far from being the best big urban park in the US.
  21. I was under the impression the front plate was optional now?
  22. We all exagerate...from time to time. The park is planed (it seems both from using it, looking at it from afar) in a rather incomplete, ad-hoc fashion. Existing facilites must be accessed via the automobile.... that is a sad statement for any park that is located in an urban area! Look, I'm not saying bulldoze the whole thing, just that some portions of the park can use a significant dose of planning and some new facilities to better serve the population. Give it to a qualified Landscape architect and let them figure out a way to make it more accessible without losing the verdant green forest many want.
  23. I thought it might have been... didn't have time to investigate. That would explain the similarities.
  24. This tower reminds me a bit of One Park Place. Its not groundbreaking in its design, but it will age pretty well I think.
  25. I've usually pushed the inspection stickers quite a ways... one time (about 3 years ago) I got an extra 4 months out of it!!! Which was reckless, and I don't recommend doing that, but I've long felt inspection stickers to be worthless. Just up the cost of registration stickers around $15 bucks statewide and that'll be plenty of extra revenue for the DMV or TDPS. While driving today, see just how hard it is to read those stickers! That's why they started color coding them... green, purple or blue is easier to spot than 06 as opposed to 08 or 09!
