Wow, shocking, a new United route from Houston. Only took them, what, 2 years?
-
That's awesome. The blue lighting of the area looks good during the year, but the green and red lighting during the holidays is fantastic. I love how you can see it in the distance from Beltway 8, Westpark Tollway, and other highways, it really looks neat.

I like it. I think the Mickey Leland building renovation shows that transformations like this can be extremely successful. That one is looking great, and hopefully this one will too.

Southwestern Energy Company Headquarters At 10000 Energy Dr.
asubrt replied to wxman's topic in Points North
While we don't have an official height (that I know of), 10 stories will clearly place it above 75 feet. Maybe one reason buildings like this and the one in the picture a few posts up seem more like midrises is that they are much wider than they are tall.- 76 replies

Southwestern Energy Company Headquarters At 10000 Energy Dr.
asubrt replied to wxman's topic in Points North
Let's not get into this again. Per the International Building Code (as of 2009)... 202 Definitions: This change provides a definition for “high rise building”. It’s defined as “A building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.”- 76 replies

Ok, you don't like this building, we get it. But do you have to use quotes in every single sentence with those bold italics? Just type normally, your posts are coming across as really obnoxious and maybe people aren't taking you as seriously as you'd like. Personally I don't mind the building. Of course I'd like for it to be taller, but Hillcorp is building it for their HQ and this is how much space they need. If it was being built without a tenant it would be competing with several of the other buildings that we all want to see built, and probably wouldn't ever get off the ground. Or worse, would prevent some of the other towers that people tend to like more (i.e. Stream/Essex) from going up.
-
Just to clarify, is this building being constructed for a specific tenant company (a la Chevron), or is it competing for tenants along with 609 Main, Stream/Essex, Capitol Tower, etc?

It's extremely frustrating to see DFW get all these new routes through American while United continues to do NOTHING at IAH. Still not a single new route since the merger.

First renderings and site plan. Looks like it will be 25 stories after all. http://swamplot.com/the-first-look-at-that-25-story-residential-highrise-hines-might-build-in-the-museum-district/2013-10-09/#more-71928

Unfortunately I don't think the HQ would have stayed in Houston regardless of the Hobby situation. United was staying in Chicago because of the tax breaks and other perks that they were offered by Chicago/Illinois. I've heard Obama played a big part in it, but I don't have any actual proof of that. And as far as international goes, while United seems to have frozen on growth in Houston since the merger (domestic as well actually), other airlines seem happy to pick up the slack with Turkish and Air China being the big ones recently. Hopefully more new airlines expand to IAH soon.

I'm pretty sure Southwest is competing just fine... they've had 40 straight years of profitability. More than most other airlines can say.

Market Square Tower: 40-Story High-Rise At 777 Preston St.
asubrt replied to Urbannizer's topic in Downtown
I also vaguely recall that there was talk of a residential development on the other half of the new Houston Ballet facility block (Smith/Preston/Louisiana/Congress). But that's not highlighted on your map, and I would be shocked if that one went up along with this one and the Hines apartment tower.- 1,894 replies

Energy Tower III & IV: Energy Corridor Tower
asubrt replied to Pleak's topic in Katy and Points West
The crane is definitely fully up at this point, with several extra sections laying near the base. Nothing in the way of vertical construction, the area just looks soaked from all the rain we've been having. I imagine they will start with pilings very soon.- 153 replies

I'm not a fan of the darker glass, I was hoping they would go with the same color as the two buildings behind it. Also, I would have preferred the blue neon lighting to go on the crown portion instead of the top of the box, but I guess that's not a huge issue. It may look better if they build a mirror tower on the last empty portion of this property.

Great list! Someone should also create a list of all the large apartment buildings going up around town, there seems to be dozens of them.

I'm pretty sure he just makes up things re: IAH and posts them here. A few months ago he claimed that he flew out of the new terminal B section even though it didn't open for another month. Right now all that's happening is the south part of the terminal. Hopefully the north side gets going soon but there hasn't been any evidence that that's going to happen.

This route already exists during the winter, so it's not really a new route. Not complaining about bringing it to the summer though. Easier to get to the mountains, although when I've tried to book this flight during the winter it tends to be very expensive.

Hotel On La Branch Between Capitol St. And Rusk St.
asubrt replied to Houston19514's topic in Downtown
Wow, this brings the total to at least 7 new hotels opening downtown: -Hyatt Place (261 rooms) -Hampton Inn (168 rooms) -Homewood Suites (132 rooms) -Marriott Marquis (~1000 rooms) -JW Marriott (323 rooms) -Springhill Suites (Humble Oil Building) (166 rooms) -Holiday Inn Flagship (Savoy) (~200 rooms?) That's at least 2200 new hotel rooms added in the next 3 years. Plus potentially even more, although some of these are pretty unlikely: -Days Inn building hotel -La Quinta -GreenStreet possible hotel component -
What the heck is your deal with insulting people based on how much/where they fly? Who cares if someone doesn't fly often or flies in economy class? It's not a competition man, no one gives a crap if you solely fly in BusinessFirst on the 787 or whatever you are implying.

Agreed, one would think it could be like a smaller, slightly less upscale version of CityCentre. Still, it seems like it takes forever for people to bring businesses to Katy, even though they frequently tend to be quite successful when they do.

It's been there for a long while. The plans for this existed when they built the JC Penny/La Madeline several years ago, but nothing else has come to fruition other than the Red Robin. I would be very surprised if it actually happened.

What is the reasoning behind not allowing bicycles on the sidewalk? It seems to me that a car/bike collision on the street would be a lot worse than a bike/pedestrian collision on the sidewalk. It's not like a have an overwhelming number of pedestrians downtown (or anywhere really).
