  1. I like it. I think the Mickey Leland building renovation shows that transformations like this can be extremely successful. That one is looking great, and hopefully this one will too.
  2. While we don't have an official height (that I know of), 10 stories will clearly place it above 75 feet. Maybe one reason buildings like this and the one in the picture a few posts up seem more like midrises is that they are much wider than they are tall.
  3. Let's not get into this again. Per the International Building Code (as of 2009)... 202 Definitions: This change provides a definition for “high rise building”. It’s defined as “A building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.”
  4. Ok, you don't like this building, we get it. But do you have to use quotes in every single sentence with those bold italics? Just type normally, your posts are coming across as really obnoxious and maybe people aren't taking you as seriously as you'd like. Personally I don't mind the building. Of course I'd like for it to be taller, but Hillcorp is building it for their HQ and this is how much space they need. If it was being built without a tenant it would be competing with several of the other buildings that we all want to see built, and probably wouldn't ever get off the ground. Or worse, would prevent some of the other towers that people tend to like more (i.e. Stream/Essex) from going up.
  5. Just to clarify, is this building being constructed for a specific tenant company (a la Chevron), or is it competing for tenants along with 609 Main, Stream/Essex, Capitol Tower, etc?
  6. First renderings and site plan. Looks like it will be 25 stories after all. http://swamplot.com/the-first-look-at-that-25-story-residential-highrise-hines-might-build-in-the-museum-district/2013-10-09/#more-71928
  7. Unfortunately I don't think the HQ would have stayed in Houston regardless of the Hobby situation. United was staying in Chicago because of the tax breaks and other perks that they were offered by Chicago/Illinois. I've heard Obama played a big part in it, but I don't have any actual proof of that. And as far as international goes, while United seems to have frozen on growth in Houston since the merger (domestic as well actually), other airlines seem happy to pick up the slack with Turkish and Air China being the big ones recently. Hopefully more new airlines expand to IAH soon.
  8. I'm pretty sure Southwest is competing just fine... they've had 40 straight years of profitability. More than most other airlines can say.
  9. I also vaguely recall that there was talk of a residential development on the other half of the new Houston Ballet facility block (Smith/Preston/Louisiana/Congress). But that's not highlighted on your map, and I would be shocked if that one went up along with this one and the Hines apartment tower.
  10. Great list! Someone should also create a list of all the large apartment buildings going up around town, there seems to be dozens of them.
  11. I'm pretty sure he just makes up things re: IAH and posts them here. A few months ago he claimed that he flew out of the new terminal B section even though it didn't open for another month. Right now all that's happening is the south part of the terminal. Hopefully the north side gets going soon but there hasn't been any evidence that that's going to happen.
  12. Finally ready to break ground, opening spring 2015. http://blog.chron.com/primeproperty/2013/06/river-oaks-district-receives-financing-and-is-ready-to-break-ground/
  13. Wow, this brings the total to at least 7 new hotels opening downtown: -Hyatt Place (261 rooms) -Hampton Inn (168 rooms) -Homewood Suites (132 rooms) -Marriott Marquis (~1000 rooms) -JW Marriott (323 rooms) -Springhill Suites (Humble Oil Building) (166 rooms) -Holiday Inn Flagship (Savoy) (~200 rooms?) That's at least 2200 new hotel rooms added in the next 3 years. Plus potentially even more, although some of these are pretty unlikely: -Days Inn building hotel -La Quinta -GreenStreet possible hotel component
  14. What the heck is your deal with insulting people based on how much/where they fly? Who cares if someone doesn't fly often or flies in economy class? It's not a competition man, no one gives a crap if you solely fly in BusinessFirst on the 787 or whatever you are implying.
  15. Agreed, one would think it could be like a smaller, slightly less upscale version of CityCentre. Still, it seems like it takes forever for people to bring businesses to Katy, even though they frequently tend to be quite successful when they do.
  16. It's been there for a long while. The plans for this existed when they built the JC Penny/La Madeline several years ago, but nothing else has come to fruition other than the Red Robin. I would be very surprised if it actually happened.
  17. No, the plan is still for it to get built. Apparently they're almost halfway pre-sold now, so things seem to be moving in that direction. I think they are discussing if someone were to buy the McDonald's property after the Astoria got built. If that happened and there was no height restriction, someone could feasibly put another tower right next to the Astoria that would adversely affect the views from one side of both buildings.
  18. Apparently Terminal B actually opened yesterday, with flights beginning today (5/21). I guess there was some misleading info earlier in this thread.
  19. Maybe it's just the proximity to Williams Tower, but this building feels really small for ~17 floors, especially when coming from the south or east. Still, it's highly visible from those directions, so that's good.
  20. Yes, but mainline and widebody are not the same thing, and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to have 777s flying out of Terminal B. Who knows though, maybe they'll change the plans.
  21. Well I must have just gotten screwed by coming on the last day before it opened (not to mention having to cancel a Jeopardy audition because of a 4 hour flight delay). That's too bad, I was looking forward to checking it out. Congrats to you for being there on the first day it was open, that's pretty cool.
  22. This is absolutely not true. The new portion of Terminal B is not open yet. I was there yesterday and tried to check out the new portion because I thought it was supposed to open May 1. After walking all around and eventually asking some employees, it turns out the new portion is not open and there is no date for when it will officially open. The current terminal B is a total hole. The amount of people sitting on the floor in the long banjo hallways was astounding. And the north part was never going to house wide bodies. Don't come in here and spread lies. And obviously Southwest has fewer departures than IAH does, but their growth in Houston has been astronomical compared to United's over the past few years.
  23. I hope they do start with the rest of Terminal B, but one reply to one of your tweets by a person with no source does not equal confirmation by any means. Until there's an official announcement we've got to assume that it's on hold indefinitely (or cancelled), as has been suggested by many sources. There's no bigger IAH supporter than me, and it sounds like you and I want the same thing (a bigger, better IAH), but you've got to chill with the fanatical optimism and be realistic about these things. Side note: I'm flying United tomorrow for the first time since Continental ceased to exist (RIP), and hopefully departing from the new terminal B. I'll try to get there early and snap some pictures for the forum.
  24. You have no way of knowing if that's true or not, just as you have no way of knowing which routes are profitable and which are not unless you work at United or know someone that does. And it doesn't even matter: the fact is they said they were going to cut because of Hobby, and they did cut. Regardless of your claims that you aren't a United fanboy, every single post you make is some combination of "United is right-sizing IAH", "They aren't punishing Houston", " I think they are going to add routes soon!", "I think United is happy with where they are in Houston", or some other vague statement with no backing. You can't argue with the fact that the post-merger activity at IAH has been different than at every other hub in the network. Maybe they have been simply cutting non-profitable routes, maybe not, but you're telling me there isn't a single city in the world that could have a profitable route from IAH that isn't already served? I think Air China and Turkish Airlines, among others, would disagree.
  25. Speaking of countless, I've seen your insanely pro-United posts on Airliners practically every single day, and while they did cut some unprofitable routes out of IAH, the fact remains that they have removed 10+ destinations and added exactly 0 (while every other hub has had multiple additions to their route network). They flat out said during the city council proceedings for Hobby international service that "we will cut service and jobs at IAH if this happens." Remember this? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-30/southwest-wins-houston-council-support-for-flights-abroad.html Yes IAH was the largest hub and yes some of those destinations were covered from Houston already, but moving you're telling me they couldn't have added a Providence, or a Madison, or Santiago, Munich, Punta Cana, or one of any number of cities that are not served from IAH? Moving the Paris flight to SFO doesn't exactly fit the "already served from IAH" criteria either. Look, I don't have access to their financial information, so I can't tell them what routes they should and should not fly, but the fact of the matter is that they way they handled the merger and the Southwest situation was a public relations disaster, and while adding a token route or two out of IAH wouldn't mean much to the general public, it would at least be a sign of good faith to the city after moving the headquarters away and slashing service left and right.
