  1. Southwest has really showed a commitment to Houston recently, unlike United. I was always a huge Continental supporter, and never flew Southwest until last year, but since the merger United has added essentially 0 destinations out of IAH (Lagos was announced by Continental, and I believe Jackson Hole/Rapid City were as well, which were the last two domestic destinations added on CO/UA that I can recall). On the other hand, in the past 3 years or so Southwest has added, or will add: Atlanta, Newark, Charlotte, Memphis, Pensacola, Washington-Reagan, NY-LaGuardia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Orange County, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Seattle, Raleigh/Durham, Panama City (FL), Branson, Charleston (SC), and Greenville/Spartanburg, not to mention 8-10 international destinations coming in 2015. Granted, United already serves almost all of these destinations from IAH, but their growth has completely stagnated in terms of new destinations, while other airlines continue to add service (Turkish Airlines, Air China, Spirit, Frontier, etc...). IAH is seeing additional capacity in terms of widebodies and of course the 787, but it seems as if they are still punishing us for the Hobby international terminal fiasco, because every other UA hub has gotten multiple new destinations (even Cleveland!) since the merger except for IAH. Not to mention the cutting of countless destinations such as Paris, Asheville, Greensboro, Beaumont, Waco, Victoria, Del Rio, Cedar Rapids, Toluca, and others.
  2. If you're into a name change, perhaps Terminal E could be named after someone? A friend an I tried to start a petition to rename it the Mayor Lee P. Brown Terminal but it didn't catch on...
  3. I like "Intercontinental". It's unique, and it implies that IAH serves airports throughout the globe on multiple different continents. If anything, it gives it more legitimacy as a gateway. Hobby will soon be a real international airport, and the distinction between Hobby serving mainly Mexico/Caribbean and IAH serving Europe/Asia/Africa etc will be shown by "International" vs. "Intercontinental". I definitely don't think it should be changed.
  4. That looks to be about 5 stories on top of a 5 story parking garage. Definitely going to make an impact.
  5. A new name? That's interesting. I guess the new owners are really going to start putting their mark on the place. Hopefully it's some good news and not just some minor aesthetic upgrades or something.
  6. It's more expensive than most, I think this one is around $20 per ticket, plus an additional $10 or so for the premium seats. There's one now in Austin at the Domain, it replaced a similar theatre called Gold Class Cinemas. I tried to see a movie there once on a normal weekend night and the ticket was ridiculously expensive, something like $50. This one seems a bit more reasonable, but still pretty pricey for a movie in my opinion.
  7. It's really close, but it's actually just inside the bend on St. James' Place (street). It could be the same property if it's a really huge apartment complex, but that seems unlikely. It's possible I just received bad info. We'll see what happens.
  8. I was recently told that the Courtyard At St. James' Place wedding venue (map http://bit.ly/Z1N2nt) would be closing later this year to be torn down to make way for a high rise. At first I thought it might be one of the residential towers in BLVD Place, but looking at the map, it's a decent distance outside of the property. Has anyone heard anything about what might be going there? Apologies if there is already a thread or something, I couldn't remember anything about that location.
  9. There's no way Air China has 1,300 destinations. United is (I think) #1 in the world with around 375 or so, followed by by Delta and American. Air China has less than 150. That number might be counting all of Star Alliance, that's the only way I could think of them coming up with a number that high.
  10. Awesome news. It seems that while United is cutting routes at IAH, other carriers are stepping in with exciting new ones. IST and PEK will be great additions to the IAH route map this year.
  11. Highlights from the news story: -New general manager of IAH Carl Newman coming from Phoenix Sky Harbor -$100 million dollar gutting and renovation of terminal D (starting a few years from now) -Changing and modernization of the blue direction signs along the airport access roads in the next year -Plans for additional domestic and international destinations -Some of Terminal B will be completed by next year Not a whole lot of new info other than the signage and commitment to renovating terminal D (although no start date was given).
  12. Apparently a major revision of terminal D is going to happen soon after all...
  13. I think TheNiche's idea is very interesting, but in the here and now, a new airline has recently announced service from IAH to Mazatlan, Mexico (which is losing United service in about a month). It's called Cal Jet Air, and it will commence service January 11, 2013. I can't tell if it's a regularly scheduled charter or a proper commercial service, but it looks at least somewhat legitimate. With this airline and Turkish Airlines starting in April, that will bring the total number of airlines serving IAH to 21. Pretty impressive. http://www.caljetair.com/houston.htm
  14. A Chronicle article from the other day said that the current plans were for another office building and a hotel. I couldn't find the article today to link it, sorry.
  15. From a Chronicle article about Comcast Houston... http://blog.chron.com/sportsmedia/2012/09/csn-houston-promo-campaign-features-altuve-lin/ As usual, his attempts to demean anything good about Houston are unfounded. The network launches October 1.
  16. Also, I think that makes 58 daily weekday flights between IAH/HOU and DFW/DAL. That's a pretty incredible number.
  17. New airlines and/or destinations are always good news in my book, so I'm glad to hear this. I've never flown Spirit before, but it sounds like it's pretty bare bones. Any personal experiences? They entered the DFW market fairly recently, and in about a year it's grown into one of their biggest stations (I believe it will be 2nd to Fort Lauderdale in terms of destinations served after these additions). Given that DFW is a fortress hub for AA along the lines of United at IAH, and that Spirit seems to be doing very well there, I wonder if we can expect similar rapid growth and success for them here?
  18. I've been to Alamo many times, both in Katy/West Oaks and in Austin, and I like it a lot. The food is just ok, but the real advantage is being able to get beer (and other drinks) while watching the movie. They have a pretty decent selection of draught and bottled beers, and a full bar in the lobby, which certainly elevates the movie-watching experience in my opinion. And their ticket prices actually tend to be a few dollars cheaper than AMC/Cinemark/Edwards/etc (not sure about Sundance as I haven't been there yet, but I heard that it was a bit more pricey), I guess because they recoup that money on food and drink. EDIT: I'm a post office! Woohoo!
  19. http://www.fly2houst...919712/0/83280/ Details about the agreement/plans...
  20. I wonder what those 4 additional international destinations are? One is Auckland presumably, but I haven't heard any others seriously mentioned. I guess smart money would be on Santiago, Munich, and Beijing/Shanghai, or maybe somewhere in the Dominican Republic/Caribbean.
  21. I hope that the previous posters are right about this becoming a Miami situation where United actually grows the IAH hub instead of downsizing it. While I'm in favor of international at Hobby bringing more flights and lower fares, if these threats by United/Lufthansa/etc actually come true, and they do cut many of our international routes, not bring the A380 here, and cause more job loss, then I'm not sure that a few extra flights to Mexico/Central America from Hobby are worth it. Hopefully they are just threats with no backbone that will disappear once Southwest does get these flights (and I think they will). Both sides' arguments are ridiculously exaggerated, which is to be expected, but really, 5 international gates at Hobby are going to bring 10000 jobs to Houston? I do agree with United on one thing, which was their initial point to make it sound like this wasn't about increased competition: the customs/immigration lines at IAH can get extremely long, and if international at Hobby does siphon away some of those agents, the waits will be out of control. Hopefully they add some staff at IAH in addition to HOU, then there shouldn't be any problem from the traveler's point of view.
