  1. I would too if they ever served that at the Downtown location lol
  2. Sources: In addition to "eyebrows," GRBCC will also get a nose piercing and some tats.
  3. Pic from Luby's above during lunch... https://twitter.com/thachadwick/status/619213856297099264 A few more pics of the northside angle... https://twitter.com/thachadwick/status/619218456525803522
  4. NYC has MSG & Prudential Center (the latter being in Newark, NJ) LA has Staple Center & Honda Center. In both cases, the venues have their own teams. (Rangers, Devils, Kings, Ducks - not counting Isles as they will play in a basketball arena next season and Nassau was outdated) I can't think of an example where a new NHL spec facility was built even though a modern NHL rink spec facility already existed. In most cities that have multiple arenas, it's because one is built to NBA spec (which has a bowl designed to fit around an NBA court), and the other built to NHL rink spec. Phoenix and Miami are good examples, although both are likely regretting this decision now as the NHL spec facilities in both cases were built in the suburbs while the NBA arenas were built downtown. Coincidentally, both NHL teams out in the suburbs are failing financially compare to their respective NBA counterparts. It would be wise for Houston not to repeat their mistakes.
  5. It's not just Les Alexander's control of Toyota Center. At this point, I think he is the only person in Houston with remote interest to bring the NHL to town. The only other person ever that challenged him was Chuck Watson and that was more than 15 years ago.
  6. Why do this ...just because Les Alexander is the point man? Toyota Center is designed to NHL specifications. We're not talking about Barclays Center here... IMO, if the NHL ever comes to Houston, the team will play at Toyota Center as I just can't see this city agreeing to build another arena when an adequate NHL spec facility already exists. The owner is a debatable issue but the home venue definitely isn't.
  7. At least MTS Center (Winnipeg) is built for hockey. The Isles will move to Barclays Center to begin a 25 year lease this upcoming season, a basketball arena that will have many obstructed view seats of its 15,795 capacity. Bruce Ratner should've planned/designed Barclays around a hockey setup as most multipurpose arenas, as was originally envisioned in BK. Now it's a terrible arrangement for all, but the Isles simply ran out of options. As for Hockey in Houston, it's no secret it all comes to Les Alexander and if it's a profitable venture for him. At $500 million dollar expansion fee, I think the best bet for Houston's NHL hopes is if he could swing a better deal with IceArizona Holdings for the Coyotes. Its possible... Alexander had a deal in principle to buy the Edmonton Oilers in 1997.
  8. I don't understand their argument at all. If you want to live Downtown, work you're way up to the top. The problem is everyone wants handout these days (and this statement is coming from a brown person) If really you want an affordable housing crisis, look at NYC and stop complaining...
  9. Hey raincloud, go screw yourself. You're flooding our nice lil park again... https://twitter.com/matekorris/status/616044042762104832
  10. Construction on Main Street's improvements started last Friday, in addition to work already started on Dallas St and Hotel Alessandra. So I think we may start to see them relocate to other streets for the moment. It will be interesting to see what happens afterwards, especially if the city can redevelope the 1100 Main/Sakowitz block, their nest.
  11. Pics of the work I saw ongoing. https://twitter.com/thachadwick/status/613052979667599361 Can we please get the TapaTalk app working again? Posting pics from a phone is much easier that way...
  12. 1300 block being closed off this morning (in addition to 1200 block as noted on street closures announcement). Fencing going up. https://twitter.com/thachadwick/status/612973895092572161
  13. The Dallas St Shopping District is a separate project from Main St Improvements. But IIRC both had similar construction timelines with a 2Q 2016 completion. Main St Improvements PDF http://downtownhouston.org/site_media/uploads/attachments/2014-02-07/140203-Main_St-Public_Mtg_Presentation-SM.pdf Edit: Looks like construction has started. Work I saw on Friday in front of Books-A-Million is the 1200 block. http://www.downtownhouston.org/development/street-closures/
  14. The initial phase of the project (esplanade, apartments, grocery by 4Q 2017) is expected to cost $250 million. http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2015/05/22/exclusivescott-beck-gets-city-go-ahead-for-4b.html No offense but I'm a bit skeptical the full $4 billion dollar complete build out happens. If it does, it'll probably take 15 years, a la Victory Park.
  15. Is this underway? Main was closed off today between Dallas & Polk in front of the old Books-a-Million space. Sidewalks there have been completely removed and are all dirt. Construction barriers are up. Not sure if this is a start or just a large underground infrastructure project. I thought this project was to start around the same time as Dallas St Shopping District construction?
  16. What he means is street-level tenants are being moved downstairs to the tunnels by August.
  17. I'll predict it's going residential. Too much new development here for the developers to miss out. Factor in Mkt Sq and all the bars & restaurants. Once MST & Hines are complete, this could become a trendy area. Residential here just makes too much sense, especially if you can't secure a tenant for a planned commercial space.
  18. Whoa. Are you kidding me? Look, I've been a Metro commuter for close to a decade. I have a personal vehicle but this my easy choice as my employer pays the fares. Sure the train nowadays has had a few incidents here & there but to call it a "killer train" now is asinine, especially compared to back 2004 when it launched and set a record for most collisions. That was a different time with an awful adjustment period. People now generally understand to look & listen. It's not the death trap it once was. As for rail spurred development and the DLI - EaDo Station apartments don't qualify for this, nor do all the condos going up in Eado. Neither does Mid-Main, Central Square renovation, Alexan Midtown, Camden McGowen Station or Camden Travis or MATCH or well anything else outside of Downtown. There's no debate here. It's clear - the trains are spurring rail development. I have my gripes with Metro - ride the 36 or 40 bus and you'll know how pissed I can get. Point is - to call any of the train lines a disaster is senseless. They may need a few modifications here & there but rail ultimately will be a success in the long term.
  19. Thing is, we don't need a trolley. They just needed to obtain the same right-of-way as they did with the Red line and the "trolley" wouldn't face the delays it sees daily. This alone would be an improvement. As more start to ride the new lines, I think this may become an issues that Metro eventually revisits. Luckily if the decide to revisit this, they may be able to easily create a right of way for the train by throwing up fences like on Texas Ave in front of BBVA, seperating the train from vehicular traffic.
  20. So I ride the Howard Hughes (Green) daily. My opinion: It is poorly designed. A. The biggest issue - Lines doesn't have their own right-of-way downtown (unlike Red line) so trains routinely get stuck behind traffic waiting to turn while pedestrians cross. Thus the train faces delays. At some points, I could outrun the damn train out of Downtown on foot. It's ridiculous how long it takes to get from the Theater District platform to GRBCC platform. From what I've heard, Metro tried to get city approval for its own right of way Downtown but the mayor refused them. Not sure on this, just what I was told by a Metro employee. B. If Green had been extended to both the Municipal Courts to the West, and down Harrisburg/Broadway to Hobby, the trains would have more ridership. As of now, they are virtually empty when I ride. (But I'm not complaining - it's much more peaceful & cleaner than the Red). As for Purple - I'd imagine if it were extended to end at Gulfgate rather than Palm Center, it also would have more ridership. C. Pedestrians along Harrisburg also face an obstacle in getting to the platform because of a commercial railroad with no crossing over. I would imagine this may discourage some from walking to the platforms at Lockwood & Coffee Plant, especially if you get caught by a freight train with no way to cross over.
  21. Devon has a different shape. I think better comparison here is 1180 Peachtree. IMO, this has the sharp lines of 609 Main's body, but with the crown of 1180 Peachtree. Its a nice proposal...
  22. Your wish almost came true ...decades ago. That parking lot pic was taken from was the Bank of the Southwest Tower site.
