  1. February 22-23, 2023 Meeting of the U. T. System Board of Regents - Facilities Planning and Construction Committee The proposed Clinical Services Building (CSB) will be a major addition to the existing U. T. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center campus at the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston. The facility will be located at the northeast corner of the TMC Campus on the site where the recently demolished Dental Branch building was located. The CSB is to be approximately 750,000 gross square feet, including approximately 10,000 gross square feet of shell space to support future growth. The CSB will include a basement and eleven floors of new construction and a mechanical penthouse.
  2. I noticed EMA does not include Texas in their portfolio section on their website. I wonder why? They have some very large, expensive, projects here. They should at least include the famous TMC Helix Park development on their website. Maybe they can loop it into their life science section? I wonder if they would ever open a satellite office in Houston specializing in healthcare/life sciences? We sure do have the industry to support it!
  3. I found South Main Airport on the 1950 Sanborn map. On the map you can see the 3 hangars and the office & school building. On the map the address appears to be 9100A South Main Street. Actually, the airport is in between 9000 and 9100B South Main. I'll assume the airport was at 9100A South Main. I tried searching around for that particular address and nothing pulled up. This is a map, so we must go by what is stated, 9100A South Main. I will combine this with the knowledge from airfields-freeman.com. http://www.airfields-freeman.com/tx/Airfields_TX_HoustonS.htm#maintst The 1945 AAF Airfield Directory described Houston Main Street Airport as a 108 acre L-shaped property having 3 sod runways, the longest being a 2,200' east/west strip. The field was said to have 3 hangars, the largest being a 100' x 60' wood & metal structure. Houston Main Street Airport was described as being owned & operated by private interests. According to Micheal McMurtrey, a Cessna T-50 was registered to Nierth Aero Services at Main Street Airport.

  5. Would anyone recommend the apartment complex Scotland Yard located at 2250 Holly Hall Street? It's so close to the medical center. I wonder what makes this particular complex stand out from the rest on the block. Thanks Website: https://www.scotlandyardapts.com/
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated December 2, 1983 and came across an advertisement for Braesbrook Landing Apartments located at 7675 Phoenix Dr. Does anyone recall these apartments? I'd love to see a photo of the buildings or signage. Any memories of living here, or visiting friends? The current site is a little confusing. Half of this complex was demolished and rebuilt with The Lanesborough Apartments at 1819 South Braeswood Blvd. The other half of the parcel was occupied with the fire station, since demolished, and now sits vacant. I guess the developer of The Lanesborough didn't need all that extra acreage. They only built on half of the parcel. Give your rent payments a semester break. Come to Braesbrook Landing, on Braeswood, just west of Fannin. We’ll give you one-half month’s rent free when you move in, to help with the expenses of getting settled. We know how to give your rent payments—and your life—the break they need. Braesbrook Landing Apartments 7675 Phoenix Drive * Houston, Texas 77030
  7. I was looking at a 1955 map of Sugar Land when I noticed an oval race track. The oval track is near Alkire Lake, Eldridge Lake, and the Houston Fishing Club Lake. Edit: This could also be considered Stafford, Texas. While searching for a name of the race track, Sugar Land's official government website indicates the race track belonged to one of the cofounders of Sugar Land, Benjamin Franklin Terry. According to Wikipedia, Benjamin Terry lived from February 18, 1821 to December 17, 1861. Looking for traces of the race track, I found it on both Google Earth Desktop and HA. HA had aerial photos of the race track in 1953. I don't think the race track would still be visible and still in the oval shape some 92 years after Benjamin Terry had died. The race track would be covered up with grass and trees over the past 90 years. Unless if someone, or some group, kept the race track alive for 92 years after Benjamin Terry's death. The City of Sugarland's history page says this: The Terry/Kyle plantation, particularly Terry’s opulent home, became the area’s social center. The house included a ballroom and was close to a horse track. Terry’s home and race track were located near today’s Sugar Mill Elementary School; 13707 Jess Pirtle Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498. The track was located at the intersection of South Kirkwood Road and Wright Road; just off South Main Street (Highway 90). You can map it yourselves by going to Walong Marketing, Inc. at 12950 S Kirkwood Rd, Stafford, TX 77477.
  8. While browsing Ebay for historical Houston items I found a matchbook cover that I've never seen before. It's of the Chain of Inns Motor Hotel owned and managed by John W. Kinsel. The old motor hotel was located at 9604 South Main Street. On the flipside of the matchbook, there is a Roman Empire Club advertisement. I'm assuming this club was located within the hotel.
  9. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated July 13, 1967 and came across a business advertisement for El Gaucho Imports Restaurant located at 6546 Fannin Street. Was this located inside a hospital? Or maybe in 1967 there wasn't a hospital at that prime Fannin location? Does anyone recall this place? Now Open El Gaucho Imports * Delicatessen - Curio Shop - Po-Boy Sandwiches Specializing in Spanish and Latin American Delicacies 6546 Fannin / JA 8-8364 (Across from Medical Center)
  10. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated May 6, 1965 and came across an apartment listing for Rebecca apartments located at 9707 Timberside Drive. What's interesting is it appears 80% of the apartments were demolished, and sometime in the 1990s the last remaining 2 apartment buildings was reused and rebranded. Now, the remaining building is called Citadel at The Med Center. I wonder why not just demolish the whole thing? Weird mystery. Anyone know about this area? $119.50 All Utilities Paid Special: Large 3-bedroom, 2 Baths for $199.50 No Lease No Deposit Rebecca 9707 Timberside / MO 6-4500 You can see the empty field where the majority of Rebecca was located in the 1960s. Now looks to be a soccer/sports field.
  11. Anyone have experience at the apartment complex called Citadel at The Med Center located at 9707 Timberside Drive? This garden-style multifamily development might actually be affordable compared to modernized 4 to 6 story apartments. https://www.citadelatmedcenterhouston.com/

  13. Saturday was a busy day! I saw both CenterPoint Energy and Stake Center out. CenterPoint emailed me back, indicating there will be construction in the area. Just what is happening? Is all this in preparation for TMC BioPort?
  14. Levit Green Boulevard is lined with trees!! The new and forth coming transmission lines are massive!!
  15. Has anyone ever hard of Aunt Ruby's Peanuts? Salted peanuts made from jumbo, Virginia style peanuts. https://www.auntrubyspeanuts.com/product/salted-peanuts/peanuts The crunchy, water blanched peanuts retain their fresh taste due to the double sealed tins that serve as a natural form of preservation. Available in 20-ounce and 40-ounce tins, the peanuts are delicately roasted in natural corn oil and then lightly salted to bring out the familiar flavor. Munch on a handful of gourmet peanuts while watching a movie with the kids. Snack on Country Style Salted Peanuts while enjoying a televised baseball or football game. Any time of the day or night offers a perfect opportunity to eat delicious cocktail peanuts fresh from Halifax County. Thinking about ordering more of their offerings as well. The honey roasted peanuts sound fantastic. The Chocolate Peanut Clusters are so addicting. Some of the best chocolate covered nuts. Considering this is mail-order peanuts, it is a bit expensive. Kind of like a Central Market type of gourmet food. Just thought I would spread the word! Some great peanuts! The CM in-house roasted salted peanuts cannot compare
  16. I don't think this is a horse riding ring. This race track features the same inner track as the Houston Speedway on Stella Link. Stella Link: Holmes Road/South Main:

  18. This afternoon I was researching the hospitals in Pasadena, Texas and came across a historic website that featured Pasadena. http://www.earlytexashistory.com/Pasadena/histime.html The website lists the year 1937 as the following: - Presbyterian church organized. - Feb 14, Champion Paper mill opens. - Jackson Jr. High built. - First hospital, Pasadena Clinic & Hospital opens (Dr. E. E. Conners). - First movie house (Rita/Pasadena Theater, now Norman Furniture). - Methodist build new brick sanctuary ($12,000 with 400 members). Does anyone know where I can get more information on Pasadena's first hospital? I tried searching the libraries, and Google, with no luck. I'm guessing the hospital name is incorrect, which is why I cannot locate any information. I did find a few articles containing the person E.E. Conners (without being a professional Doctor). E.E. Conners was apart of USMC it appears. Thanks HAIF!
