Bill Mraz Dance Hall & Residences At 835 W. 34th St.
Highrise Tower replied to suziiswanda's topic in Historic Houston
Interesting site. Looks like the complex was built throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Site plan: Original dance hall built in 1948. Original BBQ Pit built in 1948. Apartments built in 1955. Rental hall built in 1965. Rudy Mraz home built in 1962. Eugene Mraz home built in 1962. Article from The Bandera Bulletin dated October 30, 1964:- 7 replies

Anyone recall the old Houston Oilers Training Complex located at South Braeswood Blvd. & Fannin Street? I was looking for an address or photos of the complex. The site is now owned my HCFCD and has an address of 0 Fannin Street. I'm a little confused. There were two Houston Oilers training centers in the same neighborhood? One was built in the 1960s and the other opened in the early 1980s? Possibly the two were at the same location, but just rebuilt decades apart? Looking around, I see the Houston Oilers had a corporate office in the old APC building, located at 6910 Fannin Street. https://talesfromtheamericanfootballleague.com/houston-oilers-afl-timeline/ March 1, 1964: Oilers announce building of a new training site at Fannin and Braeswood. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1982/01/29/The-Houston-Oilers-Friday-unveiled-a-25-million-training/4256381128400/ January 29, 1982: The Houston Oilers Friday unveiled a $2.5 million training facility, complete with two racketball courts, to replace a training site that was widely considered to be the poorest in the NFL. The 17,860-square-foot complex on 5 acres in an industrial park is about a mile from the old site near the Astrodome.

I was browsing Ebay for historical Houston items and noticed an old matchbook from the Japanese restaurant The Mikado located at 1719 Colonnade Drive. The matches also specify Mikado was located in Smith Square Center. Does anyone recall that small retail center by any chance? I believe it was in operation from the 1970s to the early 2000s? Looking on HA, I see a small "L" shaped building located just outside of both the apartment complexes. I assume this was the Smith Square Center? Who recalls this restaurant? Any memories from here?

Baylor St. Lukes McNair Campus & Health Sciences Park
Highrise Tower replied to Lulleah's topic in Going Up!
This 3-building campus is called Health Sciences Park. https://www.bcm.edu/about-us/leadership/office-of-the-president/road-to-a-learning-health-system Health Sciences Park. This 440,000 square foot project will integrate medical education and research in a collaborative environment right next to patient care on the McNair Campus, allowing trainees to enhance their learning in the classroom by leveraging their experience in the lab and the clinic. Education space that facilitates conversation and small-group discussion and research space focused on data science and population health will augment new curriculum launching in 2023. Research centers on this campus will be dedicated to data intensive programs that support translational research and provide a foundation for data-driven training program. The first phase of Health Sciences Park, including an 11-floor tower and parking, is planned to open in 2025. This will open space on the current campus. This month we are beginning the pre-construction work on the McNair Campus for the Health Sciences Park. This will result in relocating those parking in the surface lot adjacent to the Jamail Specialty Care Center to new parking locations. I recognize that this will be an inconvenience, but it is an important step in achieving our vision of creating the Health Sciences Park. Our parking team is working with faculty and staff to accommodate their parking needs. Initially, we are keeping part of the lot open to allow our patients adjacent parking. Going forward, we will provide valet parking to patients at the same rate as the self-parking rate. New campus rendering provided in the article. Construction update:- 538 replies

Is this small Bellows office at 1018 St. Agnes sitting vacant? As always, this building and all the other immediate businesses in the area will eventually get swallowed up by MD Anderson/TMC.

In the thread, Dean ‘Candy Man’ Corll Murders, this was posted: I worked at HL&P off of S. Shaver in 1974 with Dean Coryll's room mate. Dean Coryll had also been an HL&P employee. The room mate said he had never noticed anything strange going on. He soon quit due to harassment. The boathouse that was in Houston was off Stella Link & Willowbend by the South Main Drive-in. This was blocks from my house. The spot on Bolivar was blocks from my family's beach house. & The boat storage was south of Main back off of Hiram Clark, just about 2 miles from where I grew up on Wuthering Hts. _____ What's this exactly? Any information here?

Noticed this old, expired, Loopnet listing this week. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/5206-5270-Buffalo-Speedway-Houston-TX/11995005/ Interesting that the Walgreens in the same center is not apart of the development. Unless if I'm misreading things.

Alfred Finn
Highrise Tower replied to Highrise Tower's topic in Architects, Developers, Builders, and Designs
Thank you for the wonderful history and images!! The library I visit every day has a whole bunch of results for "Goggan Building". Looks like Alfred C. Finn Architect was located in Suite 505 (or 303?) September 1, 1921: Thos. Goggan & Bro. 706-708 Main Street Houston, Texas / Goggan Building. A year later their advertisement only specified 706 Main Street. -

wow! I never knew about this apartment complex that's in between South Main and Buffalo Speedway. I see it's a garden-style complex, which means it's probably 40 to 60 years old. I wonder if it will be demolished soon to make way for a mid-rise multifamily? Does anyone have any reviews of this place? Any memories to share? I wonder who the developer and architect was? I'd hope one of the mainstream Houston developers such as Finger, Farb, or Fein. Looks like the complex was recently sold? I see two names for the apartments: 3000 @ Med Center and Mainstream Apartments.

I was looking for historical Bellaire items on Ebay this morning and noticed a book called Life And Times Around Bellaire, Texas 1909–2013. Within the book, there are photos from J. Michael McCorkle. One photo and caption reads: 1957 Bellaire residents could travel using the San Antonio Limited, seen coming down South Main Street to Houston in this photograph. I thought all of the trains ended in the 1910s and 1920s. Which particular train line was this? Or, was the author/photographer incorrect? Thanks for the information!
