  1. Did these containers arrive at the site this week? Portable Toilets to follow? Could be a great sign leading to boots on the ground!
  2. Thanks for all the updates! On Friday, I was unable to take the Redline back home and I noticed your thread. Here's the photos I took of the construction by Central Station Main. You should have stopped by 601 Travis and said hi. We'll get together soon.
  3. One of my HAIF buddy's gave me the idea of this thread. Thought I would create the thread as the TMC is considered a Central Business District. Does anyone know the multifamily occupancy/demand for the Texas Medical Center area? I know there are a lot of old, 1960s/1980s apartments situated near the TMC. Only a matter of time until a developer buys the garden-style complex and builds a 5 to 8 story apartment wrap. The TMC multifamily market is probably, mostly, based on a few key streets. Westridge, El Paseo, Brompton, Cambridge, El Mundo, Fannin, Holly Hall, etc. I'm surprised the TMC area does not share the same market-hype that The Heights/Montrose does with all these new medical districts popping up. The area to watch is Southern Fannin. Pierce Junction is practically vacant.
  4. Did anyone else notice on the Greater Houston Partnership calendar did not include the annual State of Texas Medical Center in September? I emailed GHP and received a great reply. The TMC date has not been settled yet. TBD. Cannot wait until the event! Imagine the slideshows displaying future TMC developments. * I hope TMC BioPort is involved. https://houston.org/events
  5. I have an address! I was able to investigate it due to the pharmacy building signage on a photo I found online. Thigpen's Pharmacy was located inside of The Houston Clinic building. Amazing, because I'm not sure actual address has been posted online. Every mention of the clinic I saw was "Main & Pease" but I never saw an address attached. Only on HAIF! Apparently these photos were taken in the 1950s. Awesome building by the way!! Do we know who the architect was? https://www.mrt.com/news/houston-texas/bayou-city-history/article/Throwback-Thursday-to-Houston-s-past-6555118.php#photo-14936702 Thigpen's Pharmacy was located inside of the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated May 11, 1950:
  6. I was looking on Worthpoint for historical Houston items and came across this cool club. The club was called Roulette Club located 3701 Kirby Drive. Very cool, because I've never seen the original facade! Anyone know the date to this? I'd say 1970s?
  7. Edit: Split this into a new thread. There is two Masonic Temples in Downtown. Masonic Temple at Main and McKinney, circa 1927.
  8. Today I was searching around for old hospitals and came across a very cool address! Thought I would share with HAIF. I am confused. Did the block 9200 South Main Street (or Main Street Boulevard) exist in the 1920s? I looked on a few maps of the 1920s and 1930s. One map showed South Main Street stopping at Holcombe Blvd, while Old Main Street Road was the only road going further. Other maps showed South Main Street as being a paved roadway. Which one was it?!?! The address in the thread title could be wrong. This might be 9218 South Main Street. I found the details in the publication Harris County Medical Society, Woman's Auxiliary Year Book Program dated September, 1926. Year Book Woman's Auxiliary To The Harris County Medical Society Organized April 1919 Federated State May 1919 Houston, Texas 1926-1927 The doctor's addresses contained the following: Cruse, Mrs. P.R. - 208 Sul Ross, H. 4502 Denman, Mrs. P.R. - 1220 Southmore, H. 0417 Devoti, Mrs. J.J. - Broadway and Alexander, W. 1658 Dunman, Mrs. T.E. - 711 Hawthorne, H. 1696 Durha, Mrs. M.E. - 438 W. 21st St., T. 5946 Ellis, Mrs. J.C. - 1301 Marshal, H. 3237 Elliot, Mrs. M.L. - 9218 S. Main, H. 0773 Feagin, Mrs. H.C. - 3806 Garrett, H. 0361 Flickwir, Mrs. A.C - 4316 Dallas, W. 4209 Foster, Mrs. J.B. - 2020 W. Main, W. 5799 Foster, Mrs. J.H. - 1708 River Oaks, H. 6791 8 years after, in 1934, the house was occupied by Mrs. Greenwood. Very interesting, because I think this is the source of the internet's wrong information regarding the location of Greenwood's Sanitarium which is (actually) located at 7308 Old Main Street Road. I believe, to my research, these are different families. I do know there was a James Greenwood Senior, and a James Greenwood Junior. Maybe this is the one of the wives? According to TSHA, Greenwood, James, Sr. was married to Ella Harris. Definitely not James Greenwood Senior! https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/greenwood-james-sr From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 23, 1934: As the regular meeting of the E.B. L.S. Last Monday, the pledges invited all of the active members to an Open House which will be given at the home of Mary Greenwood, 9218 Main Street. Saturday evening, November 24, from 7:30 until 9:30. The hostess announced the following committees to make arrangement for the party invitations, Martha Bartels, Billie Byers, Catherine Crain, and Peggy Warren. Refreshments, Kathleen Carr and Betty Abbott. The decorations will be keeping the approaching Thanksgiving season. The annual Thanksgiving breakfast given by active members for the alumnae, will be held at 8:0 next Thursday morning at the Carolina Pines. The president urged all of-- 2nd page: The pledges of Elizabeth Baldwin Literary Society will entertain the members from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday when an open house at the home of Miss Mary Greenwood, Main Street Road. Misses Katherine Dionne, Ida Delllacy, Elizabeth Neathery and Kate Ross Patton will preside at the coffee service. An autumn theme will be carried out in the dining room where the fruit and autumn leaves on a mirror reflector will center the table.
  9. wow! This might be the most clear, detailed photo of Sivils' Drive-In Restaurant I've ever seen! Cool history here.
  10. I was looking around Worthpoint for historical Houston things and came across a cool old matchbook. The restaurant featured on the matchbook was called Casa Poli located at 2231 W. Holcombe Blvd. Does anyone recall this place? Any memories to share? I don't have a date. Can we date this? 1950s - 1970s is my guess. Casa Poli Your hosts Joe & Frances 221 West Holcolmbe Blvd. * Phone MO 5-9520
  11. Found more information!! https://www.mrt.com/news/houston-texas/bayou-city-history/article/Throwback-Thursday-to-Houston-s-past-6555118.php#photo-16350059 From the newspaper The Houston Chronicle dated May 25, 1972. This stately live oak tree continues to grow on a parking lot on Rusk between Fannin and San Jacinto, impervious to the march of downtown construction. The tree was planted around 1900 by William D. Cleveland Jr., whose family lived on the site. Cleveland, a cotton merchant who died in 1958 at the age of 85, asked Houston Endowment, Inc., owners of the property, not to cut down the tree. An official said the tree would remain standing as long as the foundation owns the land.

  14. I was searching Ebay for historical Houston items and came across an usual hospital in Houston. The item is a deck of cards that has a children's hospital name affixed. What in the world is this? Never heard of this hospital! I searched Google Maps a little and came across a street in Kingwood called Maple Lake. Was this a small hospital for the Maple Lake residential subdivision in Kingwood? Can we date this? The phone number (?) appears to be a 000-000 format. Maple Lake Children's Hospital * Houston, Texas 288-101
  15. wow!! I found some marketing material for "The Plant". So cool! Fun fact, in Houston, there was a total of 3 clubs called Plantation. - Gary Smith's Plantation Club At 215 Milam St. - Plantation Club At 9101 South Main St. - Plantation Club At 10200 South Main St. Souvenir of - Plantation Houston, Texas "Always a Good Time"
  16. wow!! There was more than one motel (or brand) at 2121 Allen Parkway? I thought it was the Allen Park Inn. My question is: What motel came first? Allen Park Inn or Ramada Inn? Who was the architect? The Ramada Inn Houston, Texas 77019 The ultimate in comfort in all 200 rooms and the executive suites . . . enchanting scenery, floral gardens, heating swimming pool . . . dining room, 24-hour coffee shop . . . fully equipped and easily catered convention and meting rooms. 2121 Allen Parkway Phone (713) 523-7383
  17. Interurban Depot At South Houston. There should be a race track (horses?) somewhere near the South Houston Depot. I was reading an article in The Houston Post. dated in the early 1900s and the race track featured said: Follow the Interurban line to South Houston. Would this mean near City of South Houston? Or Third Ward? Near South Main & Holmes Road?
  18. Found a cool old club this week. Very cool, because I remember reading about this place on HAIF decades ago. Thought I would share. Does anyone know more information about the club? 22. Today was the second concrete mat pour! It was fun!! Glad to be apart of the construction. This tower is going fast!!
  23. Removing the trees fast!! Nice background buildings as well. Both buildings are brand new!
  24. Question about one of the renderings released for the new UTHealth School of Public Health building. Does anyone else see an unnamed building that's ghosted to the right? What is this about? Could this be the proposed UTHealth Digital Innovation Tower?
  25. I got this idea from another HAIF member. I wonder the percentage of hotels sitting empty, and that are very active, in the TMC area? Unlike downtown, and other areas, I don't see the TMC hotels being converted into residential. I bet hotels in the TMC stay pretty full unlike areas of town. I know this is a given, but I wish the TMC would create a hotel skyscraper. 40 to 50 stories. I believe the proposed TMC Helix Park hotel is around 30 stories. Then again, people visiting the TMC might not want a luxury skyscraper hotel due to their medical cost.
