  1. Here it is in honor of TJones Straight of my own myspace again... http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...deoid=632686408
  2. I saw a report on KHOU a few months ago that people in Generation X were losing their native tongues because of the fact that there weren't many schools that were teaching their languages. They used the Vietnamese community here in the SWAT for an example. The adults knew and understood Vietnamese, and a pretty good amount of that generation have opened Viet-based stores. But people 25 and under didn't have an understanding of the language because not had a total grasp of the language at home before the end of middle school, and once high-school were complete, they would have to find extensive tutorials in order to learn their ancestor's language. What if languages like Vietnamese, Korean, Cantonese, and other Asian languages were available in public schools somehow. Doesn't even have to be in the curriculum. Couldn't those kinds of languages be afterschool clubs starting in Elementary?
  3. SWAT stands for SouthWest Alief Texas. If U ever hear someone on the radio claiming "the SWAT", it means they're from Alief. Bellaire SWAT means Bellaire in the Alief area.
  4. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4414484.html This story really caught my eye since I've heard mixed reviews on learning languages other than English here on HAIF. Kolter Elementary School was granted a 3-year, $500,000 grant to add Mandarin Chinese to kindergarden students who at that school already have French, Spanish, Japanese avainable to them. It's a very elaborate and seemingly successful project for kids at Kolter to be bilingual. Personally, I'm impressed by Kolter, but I'm baffled that this is only available to few elementary schools in the Houston area. Houston's a multi-lingual city, yet not that many foriegn languages are available to kids in a way that they could learn fluently. If we can spend money on our stadiums, public safety, and roads, and can grant money to improving school infrastructure and teacher's salaries, what money is guaranteed to kids to learn more than other countries' kids can even though we're supposedly the richest and greatest nation on earth? From the article. "We really are the only industrialized nation that routinely graduates students from high school with just one language," Abbott said. "Historically, it hasn't been that important for us, but the world has changed fundamentally."
  5. Can you supply more info on the event? Anything online?
  6. We've been a trend-setting city for the past couple years (ESPECIALLY on MTV) Where've U been? We went from not being mentioned to MTV's 2004 Super Bowl fiasco to Destiny's Child getting A-Lister play to Swisha House artists winning MTV Music Awards to Houston models blowin' up Myspace, to Houston athletes blowin' up ESPN etc. Look at how many times you see rappers (Jay-Z, P-Diddy, all H-Towners) wearing vintage Astros jerseys. Next time you're in the mall, check out how many people are sporting McGrady, Yao Ming, or Vince Young jerseys or shoes. And when it comes to hanging out at night, have you ever tried Bellaire in Alief ( > da SWAT, baby!!! > ), Starbucks on Westheimer & Post Oak, Montrose, Warehouse district near 3rd Ward, Main Street Downtown, Sugarland Town Center, Westheimer's car crews, or Midtown? We have more millionaires in Houston than any city in Texas, and plenty that are middle-upper class, and a lot of them are under 35. That means they love to splurge, and this city accomodates. They're the ones setting the trends, while making mad international business. There's a reason why seven Cinncinati Bengals were arrested outside a Houston nightclub and not in Cincy. And they weren't playing here the next weekend, either. Another problem with Real World coming to Houston isn't the fact that it's not hip or trendy; it's the fact that there's no one definition as to what hip or trendy is in Houston. Every area of town is like another city here. It's difficult to have just one personality and call that Houston. Montrose, Bellaire SWAT, Uptown, and Downtown are like four different worlds. Difficult to call just one Houston. But if there was one, I'd say Uptown...
  7. (By the way, DJ V Lawrence and Vicky Lawrence are not related. Just coincidence)
  8. Anyone that would do her should either go hunting with Cheney or run for Miss USA...
  9. After hanging out in the Museum Tower, on Main Street square, and at Tan Tan on Bellaire Saturday night while jammin' to Paul Wall, Mike Jones (who?) Mike Jones (who?) Mike Jones, Chamillionaire, and Slim Thug on our bangin' system, I beg to differ... > Whu'chu know 'bout dat?! >
  10. True that, but you as the homeowner don't have to worry about a fine...
  11. ? If either one of them were any good, why couldn't they predict their current fates? And why didn't Dr. Phil warn them?
  12. We need a QB that Kubiak is confident in taking risky plays with. If he has confidence in Carr, he needs to show it with his play calls. If not, there's nothing we can do with Carr as QB and Kubiak as coach at the same time. I'm still referring to the Titans game. Didn't bother to watch the Patriots game. I turned it on for 5 seconds in the 2nd quarter and saw the score was 20-0, and knew everything I needed to know about the Texan's season.
  13. The fact that the Titans are still in playoff contention is the point...
  14. If Houston keeps up it's trend up of hosting major soccer tournaments like the Gold Cup and have 70,000+ soccer matches like the Barcelona double-header this last Summer, we have a VERY good chance at getting World Cup here should U.S. win the bid. Houston's one of the host cities for Gold Cup '07, and seeing the amount of Dynamo fans that made it 248 miles away to show up to the match helped show the world once again that Houston's a sports town to take very seriously. By 2014, I'm expecting much higher ratings for soccer/futbol, because the American media will be covering it a lot more starting in 2008. Case in point: The European Cup. Last time played, it was partially on FoxSports and PPV. In 2008, it will be shown in America with similar coverage as in the World Cup: ABC, ESPN, ESPN 2, and in spanish, Univision. I'm expecting the Gold Cup to have some good coverage as well since the U.S. won last time. If we get a world-class coach to replace Bob Bradley, or if he proves to be a coaching star like Klinsmann, ratings would probably skyrocket as a result to the media's respect for the U.S.'s desire to win.
  15. Not to offend those tired of hearing about Willams/Bush/Young, but the Saints earlier today clinched a playoff spot (even though they lost). The Titans won today and are 7-7, and their playoff hopes are very much alive since they beat the Jaguars. The Texans are, um, at the bottom of their division Only good thing though is that we're twice as good as we were last season
  16. Biggest reason why they have a chance is because of their well designed, decent-size stadiums with natural grass, plus the fact that both cities have fought in the past to host big events like the X-Games and Olympics, so they have experience at making bids. Ohio also has strong patriotism towards the U.S.A., as shown when they sell out for American games. I'll make a correction, though. Ohio State's 100,000 seat stadium probably has the best chance of being a World Cup host site in the state of Ohio, because of it's size, and it's location: Columbus, home of the Columbus Crew, and the city that hosts more U.S. games than any in Ohio.
  17. I hope so. Question is this though; What are the chances that Houston AND Dallas would both get to host World Cup games? There's a good chance that USOC would do everything to avoid the games from having two host cities in the same state that's not California It will be a dogfight between all the cities with new 70,000+ stadiums before 2014, and the final would probably be held by a stadium newer than 2010. My opinion 15 cities that could be fighting to be one of the elite eight: Houston- Reliant Stadium Dallas - New Cowboys Stadium Glendale, Arizona - Univ. of Phoenix / Cardinals Stadium Los Angeles - Hollywood Bowl Pasedena, California - Rose Bowl Stadium Silicon Valley - New 49ers Stadium or New Athletics/MLS stadium Chicago - Soilder Field (Bears) Philidelphia - Lincoln Financial Field / (Eagles) Seattle - Qwest Field/ (Seahawks) New York/New Jersey - New Giants/Jets Stadium Tampa Bay - Raymond James Stadium (Buccaneers) Washington D.C. - Fed Ex Field (Redskins) Denver - Mile High Stadium (Broncos) Foxboro, Mass - Gillette Stadium (NE Patriots and NE Revolution) Cleveland or Cincinati - Paul Brown or Cleveland Stadium (Bengals or Browns) 10 Possible Finals and Semifinal cities: Houston Dallas Glendale, Ariz. Chicago Washington D.C. Rutherford, New Jersey Philidelphia Los Angeles Pasedena, Cali Foxboro, Mass
  18. I would only be okay with Real World in Houston if it were protrayed as the young, rich, upscale city it is like in Uptown, Midtown, or the museum district. Someplace and some format that sucessful Houstonians in their early 20's would probably live and find appealing to them. If it's gonna be stereotypical of what New Yorkers THINK of Houston, don't come...
