  1. Oh, yes, Hotel Icon is here to stay. Changing owners is a good thing. According to this report on Houston's HOT restaurant scene, our economy is raging. Money flowing. Jeez, it reminds me of the 70s. Except we were thinking $30 per barrel of oil and now it is $70. Haute Houston
  2. Christ, that was back in the old days. You are right. The World Trade Ctr. Anyhow, we have evolved as the premier international city of the United States of America. Our competition in Texas? Dallas at 30 consulates.
  3. Actually, I don't know. But .... Pennzoil is a famous building that was one of the first in the world to represent a twin-tower, sloped roof design in the trapezoidal shapes. At any rate, I hope they aren't moving to South Tower Pennzoil Place because I don't want to compete for elevators. I don't think Heritage is at all vacant. Last count was they had over 700,000 sq. ft. leased. News on this would be great to hear.
  4. I meant for me "I'm not going to worry about it." Just a phrase. Certainly not mentioned for your post. I'm sorry about how I worded my post. I meant, I wish it would have been built in another block somewhere downtown, but I can't worry about that now because it is done. It isn't ugly. And, yes, troyboy, you are definitely important to the forum with your comments and thoughts.
  5. From HP website: A central courtyard and people-friendly streetscapes will allow for alfresco dining and window-shopping. The entire second floor of the development will be connected through walkways spanning Fannin St. and San Jacinto St.
  6. It is now up to the Texans to play at the level we played whipping the Jags. Of course, the Texans have always played the Jags tough. The two teams match up well for whatever reasons. Our Texans need to go out and prove they are tough enough to win a road game to a 1-5 team - Bud's bunch. Come on, David, show those Longhorn fans that we didn't need to draft Vince Young. I know you can git r dun.
  7. Yeah, the administrative staff that comes in from New York to get trained at Houston's headquarters stay at the Magnolia. The girls rave about those nice bathrooms over there. Coming from New York (you know how big those bathrooms up there are or shall I say how small), it is no wonder they love the Magnolia.
  8. Houston1st - you rock. Don't know where you get your info, but if I need to call a consulate, I can.
  9. While dining at Charley's 517 today, the table next to me was mostly Scottish and U.K. folks. Last week, it was a Capetown, South African contingent. There is always an international table somewhere at lunch at Charley's. This reminded me to check to see how many foreign consulates we have in Houston. 83 was the number I found. Houston is Texas' most international city, and one of the most international cities in the world. Perhaps it is the energy sector that brings the most to the table, but Houston's diversity is the magnet that attracts thousands of people every year to this semi-tropical mega-city. A co-worker informed me that there are over 90 languages spoken in Houston. I can only speak one: Texan.
  10. Tell me, what is the name of the new bar? Whiskey Bar - out. New bar - _______.
  11. A couple of weeks ago, a New Yorker was down at our big Houston headquarters for training. I sent her to The Galleria to shop before she took her rich ass off to W. Palm Beach, Fla. I received an email from her on the Monday after training and she stated that "You were right. It is expensive there. But, it is too big. I couldn't find a nail salon."
  12. I don't know about Texans fans in Dallas, but my two friends who went to the game in Dallas said there were impressed with lots and lots of Texans fans there. Of course the Chronicle printed the number of season ticket holders from Houston to Dallas. The Texans sold over 60,000 season tickets. The Cowboys have never had that kind of season ticket fan base. Interesting ... Cowboys would not provide a breakdown of their season ticket holders. That one doesn't make much sense. Anyhow, they had 63,000+ for Monday night football. Texans always get 70,000+
  13. So is Texaco not in there (Heritage) any more? I have a friend who worked there, but i haven't heard from him in a while. Guess I need to give him a call.
  14. What a difference a week makes? 27-7 W for Texans and another L for Dallas. Dallas doesn't do as well when playing teams with winning records. Whipping a team only 5 yrs. old might make the Irving Cowchips' fans elated, but Philly and NY will get the last laugh. Hell, the Texans may have the last laugh. We have a long way to go. In Dallas, Giants pick and grin It didn't matter who was at QB for the Cowboys. Neither Drew Bledsoe or Tony Romo made much hay, combining for four interceptions and six sacks in a 36-22 MNF defeat.
  15. Let's see: HP now has Lucky Strike, House of Blues and lots of upscale restaurants. Financing in place. This is going to be BIG for downtown. Discovery Green is under construction. One Park Tower will be breaking ground. Rocbar is going up at Bayou Place. I noticed lots of construction in Midtown and across I-45 as well. Cool
  16. I think it is unusual, but forgetting the name and focusing on the park: trees, a small lake, fountains, amphitheater, dog run, plus a 501 ft tower (One Park Tower) downtown means a lot to me. If you don't want to go down there, fine. I will bring my dog to this park. I can't wait! With all the rain we've had this week, GREEN it will be.
  17. Isn't that the 64000 dollar question? Makes no sense to me. But I am a Texans fan and will be for life. I my town. By the way, Dallas can brag today about beating Houston (we suck); but let them play somebody .... hmmmm.... Philly perhaps? And watch them get plastered. P.S. My friends went to the game in Dallas. Had to park in a muddy field. Walked over a mile to the stadium and said the stadium was soooooo 1970's. Asbestos. Small corridors. Boy, they really do need to build a new one up there. Hell, the Astrodome is better than Texas Stadium. Houston and Dallas are 1-1 against each other in regular season. Doesn't sound so bad when you phrase it that way.
  18. Discovery Green I think Discovery Green will be a great park. When they named Hermann Park, did anyone have reservations about that name? Probably. I think the renderings show a beautiful park downtown. We need that more than simply building more skyscrapers (which is inevitable) or more parking garages.
  19. Central Park ... no way. I think that would be too copy-cat like (New York - argh - has that). Let's give it something we can relate to in Houston. I liked Tranquility Park (our park built during that part of the space program) for a name. Maybe something space-like or whatever. But not Central.
  20. Yeah, with their profits, they can just fly the execs between Dallas and Houston .... expenses no prob. But I paid 1.93 cents a gallon today.
  21. You are right ... right behind Longhorn and Charlies 517. But, actually, I forgot what was there before? I remember some building being demolished to make way for Calpine. It escapes me what that building was. Do you remember?
  22. So, top ten .... five or half (50%) in Houston? Someone will get argumentative on this one.
