It looks like it has been wired with explosives.

We had a hurricane party and stayed up all night. During the eye, I went outside to retrieve someone's dog that had gotten loose. Like fools, after it passed, we attempted to drive downtown, but between Buffalo Bayou raging and DT being cordoned off, we never made it. I also remember seeing jet skis zipping around on the sunken part of 59 through Montrose.

They've removed most of the brick on the first few floors revealing the steel structure.

Maybe they've been there for a while, but I just noticed the other day. There are now street signs indicating what street the bridges are.

El Big BAD is going here in October. http://blog.chron.com/29-95/2013/08/el-big-bad-to-open-in-downtown-in-early-october/?cmpid=hpts

I remember when One Shell and Well Fargo were not connected, but don't recall the method they used to connect.

I wonder what it looks like from the inside looking out?

Is that the same parking lot where the International Tower by Stream/Essex with Linbeck construction?
It said caddy-corner from Mkt Sqr, so that would be the lot next to Frank's Pizza.

Thanks lockmat (and Subdude for the message) - I was down there last night but couldn't see much - where does it actually have the engravings?
In the center, above the first floor, on Main St.

I noticed from the train the other day that the building stone is engraved with "Second National Bank".

Help me out other "chronologically enhanced" HAIF'ers; which building had the "weather ball" on top? Was it the old Continental Oil Company building?
I vaguely remember a spherical element that was lit up in different colors to indicate changes in the weather. It was probably tied to barometric pressure readings and whether those were rising or falling. True that a smart phone can give that information including RADAR but a quick glance on top of a tall building is faster and safer when driving on the Pierce Elevated even if not as detailed.
It was Central Bank. There was also a nightclub up there on the top floor (from what I remember reading).

Pepper Jacks is closed. I never went because everybody I talked to said the service was horrible and the food was overpriced and not very good.

Ooops. I thought I was on the BG Group site talking about the new Hines bldg at Main and Texas. Sorry.
-
Remember this is Hines. They don't cheapen their projects. Look around at all the treasures that Hines developed in this city. Still, this is a very valid point, especially for investors from other places.

Wish the Sterling Hotel was gracing downtown right now.
Also, the Westin/Doubletree was built. That's the hotel on Post Oak Blvd that was a Hilton for a long time...
The Double Tree on Post Oak was originally built as a Warwick in the mid 80's.

I guess that with the new Hines development, they'll finally tear down the old Sterling Bank building.

I'd say that Richmond Ave. is "torn up" to say the least from Kirby to the Spur. Not just Montrose.
Westheimer is really bad as well.
W. Alabama is bad too. The drought really took it's toll. The road sank, but the manholes didn't.

One of those bums did thousands of dollars in damage tonight. Businesses on franklin, 200 to 400 travis main, etc. Customers chased him till police got there. Tons of broken windows
The windows are still boarded up at Macondo.

You did take a picture of my place, should I feel stalked?

That could be true, I was going off of the below, looks like it could be parking and residential.
http://www.bisnow.com/commercial-real-estate/houston/midtown-under-development/
"Dan says affordable housing makes sense there for residents without cars, and demand is high, but it’s hard to make the numbers work. Trinity is partnering with an affordable housing expert, and its master plan calls for a 100-unit multifamily complex with seniors, low-income, and workforce housing plus parking. He tells us the old Midtown code enforcement site is selling to an apartment developer, and Camden and Midtown are gearing up a three-part development at the Superblock (a multifamily community, park, and retail/ commercial buildings). Lastly, Urban Deal’s Adam Brackman is redeveloping the old Sunnyland Furniture store (empty since 1989's TS Allison) into a mixed-use retail/office/multifamily building."
TS Allison was in 2001. Sunnyland had moved out to Fondren at least by the early 80's. I think they may have kept the Midtown location as a warehouse, but I'm not sure.

Is there a height/load limit on concrete structures? It seems that all of our newer construction uses concrete. The tall buildings built here during the '80's were constructed using steel. Isn't the cost of steel crazy right now?

The Kroger's at 1938 W Gray St Houston, TX 77019 used to be a Weingarten's.
So did the former Fiesta on Dunlavy as well as the Container Store on Post Oak.

Does anyone know what's going in at the old Texaco station across from Stewart Cadillac on Main? They've added on to the back and covered the original stone work.

I wonder to where they'll relocate. They had far too much business to just shut down.

It looks like the lot between Frank's and where the apt. tower will be has not been sold. There's an "Available" real estate sign still up.
