  1. It was truly an amazing site to watch.  The largest fire I've ever seen was a grain silo that was located on the northeast corner of Montrose and Allen Pkwy, diagonally across from the Magnolia Cemetery.  The flames from that fire were probably as high as the AIG tower is tall.

  2. Aren't the big grain silos still on I-10 west, behind the community college? Those and the ones at Hempstead Hwy and Long Point are the only two I can think of that are left standing.

The silos on Studemont were the entire stretch of land from Walgreens to where that street is (don't know the name) where you enter the complex of condos off of Studemont. Used to be a big paper company right there too. In its place is that tall building next to Memorial / Allen Pkwy on Studemont.

That silo burned in the 80's - biggest fire I've ever seen in my life.

  3. Wtf, why did they ban lit up corporate logos on the towers?

Because they're tacky and would take away from the architectural signifcance of many buildings.  Ah, remember the rotating Gulf sign atop their building?  That one was cool.

Hotels can still have signage downtown.

  4. I know this is off topic but since there is a discussion about facades being altered, I'd like to mention a building that is old and has a very brutal exterior that was added in the early sixties. I have seen pictures and vaguely remember it from my childhood the old Sears building in Midtown. I wish they would remove the siding and allow that building to live in its old glory.

If anyone can post an image of it from its heyday I think everyone would agree that it needs back its original facade and a new life,

Other than a Sears which doesn't seem to be doing that well. It could be repurposed for many different activities.

There are threads and pictures on here somewhere.
