  1. Wow, I know her first husband died before she got into politics. So she has buried two of them. She must be hard on them.

Wasn't there some story about Fred Hofheinz being busted wearing a dress?

No, Gene Locke is running for mayor this time and they were never married. Therefore, he's not dead. As far as I know, her second husband is still alive and living with her in Hawaii. Where did you come up with two dead husbands??

I remember the dress story somewhat, but what I really remember was Louie Welch's comment. When asked how he would combat AIDS, his answer was "Shoot the Queers". He did not know the camera was on. T-Shirts were made up immediately that read "Louie, Don't Shoot!". The 80's were a trip, politically.

  2. What has Kathy "Tootsie" Whitmire been doing lately?

Living in Hawaii with her long blond hair and husband, last I heard.

I read on a blog the other day that after she was widowed, she and Gene Locke were romantically involved back then. mellow.gif

  3. I find it pretty funny.

I also find it funny that folks will buy a piece of land 500 feet from the Gulf with an elevation of 5 feet. Spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a house and then when a 25 foot wall of water hits them complain that the government should have done something about it.

I've not seen any evidence of this happening on Bolivar. Most people who lived or had places down their fully realized the risk. Also, part-time residences do not qualify for FEMA assistance. Keep in mind that a lot places were built years and years ago. I can't remember if the house, built in the 1800's, with an historical marker, made it.

I'm sure it will all be rebuilt eventually, applying the new building codes. Of course, you'll need a lift to get you up to your house.

  4. I guess some folk just don't like a discussion. Sorry to sully the silly Boardwalk thread,

I wouldn't classify it as discussion; I'd call it bickering and it's draining all of my powers. wacko.gif

Think I'm done with this thread.

CONTRATULATIONS KEMAH BOARDWALK on making the top 10 list. Hope to get down there soon.

  5. I understand the problem but I find it hilarious that folks will buy a place right next to the train tracks and them complain about the noise. There have been folks living in this area, next to the railroad for what now for what, a hundred years? Do these "Quiet Zones" exist in other parts of the city? what about other cities?

The line that runs parallel to the West Loop is a quiet zone. All of those cross streets have updated rail crossings.

  6. I tried to embed a goggle map but I'm retarded with that stuff. I trust your eyes rsb, and since you have been there I have no reason to question you. I'm only going from memory and the body of water at the top left appears to be East Bay as it empties into Rollover. This must be an illusion, or maybe just flood water. And now that I look at it, Highway 87 has a slight curve toward the Gulf as it passes through Caplen, this photo does not show that, so I stand corrected. (just like that house)

I can totally understand your disorientation; I had a really hard time finding my street when we first got down there. If the picture were facing west, the Gulf would be on the left.

This photo must have been taken on the day after the storm. The body of water at the top left is actually a cow pasture. This entire area was littered with overturned vehicles, half buried in sand. No doubt, people were trying to escape and were cut off before High Island. Many had to have perished, but you don't hear about that. I wonder what the final death toll was?

  7. Throughout my life I've usually discovered that native Houstonians (born, raised and live)... have a much more negative attitude towards Houston than the transplants.

Wonder why that is.... my guess.... the natives have seen the decades of changes.... and consider them more negative than positive.

I've been here for three decades and I'm very pro-Houston. Then again, I live and work in the inner-city. I don't have traffic jams or long commute times, etc. I think that it's more the suburbanites that have negative views because of their detached living conditions.

At any rate, I think the Boardwalk is a great asset for the area. Of course, I remember when it was a sleepy, quaint and salty little village. The whorehouses had already closed (Pink Pussycat?) when I went for the first time, but there were good restaurants.

Think of the benefit that the sales tax revenue for 3mil brings Kemah.

  8. Gilchrist is on the other side of Rollover Pass, which is in the distance (top of photo). If the Gulf is on the right, then this house is in Caplen.

Dude, Rollover is behind you in the photo. The picture is facing toward High Island. What you think is Rollover in the distance is the highway, which is now at the water's edge. The yellow house is east of Rollover. I've seen it with me own eyes. blink.gif

  9. Regarding the poster who complained a day of errands would cost $20: this is not possible unless you double back on the same bus route 16 times or tap your Q card every 2 hours for 32 hours. Getting off and back on a bus in the same direction is a free transfer with Q, as are unlimited transfers between routes within 2 hours.

It's probably possible if you're not using a Q card, but are using cash. If I am correct, transfers are nolonger available to cash payers.

  10. From what the eyewitness said, she suspected it was Lightning, but nothing official has been announced.

There was lightening/thunder but nothing that close. Not like when the Skybar building and the power vault in Midtown were struck. Those were LOUD.

I distinctly remember hearing a couple of pops and thinking to myself, no that's not thunder.

Judging from how the HFD site reported it (Tree Fire-Apt Fire-111 Fire), I'm going to assume that a transformer blew, setting a tree on fire and tree setting the apt on fire.

It looks like the shell is still in tact. I wonder if it could be rebuilt from within?

  11. Has anyone taken the Nitric Oxide capsules that were recently advertised on HAIF, or does anyone know about it? I got a free two-week supply, but haven't starting taking them yet. When I do start, I'll expect to be buff and brawny when my supply runs out.
