  1. We've actually gotten 4 or 5 papers delivered to us since we've moved in, and we don't order it. Not the promos to try to get you to sign up either, just a random paper. Our front yards are fenced and they toss it all the way to the door, so it's not like I can leave it there so the proper neighbor can come get it. I am contemplating a subscription though. Jumble and coupons...
  2. I might have to check that out. I am really lazy when it comes to researching helpful things like that. EDIT: WHOA! What magic is this? Can you teach me any other magic tricks? Can you make traffic get out of my way?
  3. We don't have the chron delivered, but i get it every other Sunday or so. I like reading the paper, and we typically save way more than $1.75 using coupons we get from it. And the word jumble isn't online. That's the best part. I hate online ads, they get no clicks or even attention from me. I like getting internet info for free. Something, someday, will have to give.
  4. There's a really cheap one with real grass not too far outside the loop, near 43rd and TC Jester. Forgot the name, but I found it on Google. I don't like hitting off of the mats as much.
  5. Went to Java Java this morning, not really a fan. My "best in town" waffle was not near as good as ones I've made myself at the self-service Holiday Inn Express breakfast. As to the coffee, it was so watery that my wife had to double check after it was poured that it was indeed coffee. Prices remind me of Dry Creek, way too high for what you get. Why go here when I can spend $2 less per food item for better food at Frank's? Exactly.
  6. They lost in typical Texans style, and not being a fan I was amused by it. Bout time a team came along and tried to take the joke of the league title away from my Saints. That's not just a one-year title either, there's a different goat every year, but I'm talking about decades of losing and humiliation. Texans are well on their way. Unless the Bengals take the title back...
  7. Yeah, I would, but I don't have a truck... but I know someone who has a Tundra (and gets 20+ mpg). Seriously, if someone needs a set of hands to help with that I've done it before. It is loads of fun. And it will leave holes in your house!
  8. I'll be in the Heights too, the west side of it by Shepherd. I consider myself pretty young (30 next week!!), fit, and able, so if there is assistance you need with heavy lifting for any cleanup activities let me know.
  9. I've been to 3 different Collina's (don't know if there are more), but I would say 19th and Richmond are tied for best and have the same menu as far as I can tell. Anything past pizza or a calzone and what's the point anyway? The one in the village, I love the little patio, but the food wasn't as good as the others. We walk to the one on 19th all the time and always come away happy. My new favorite is Frank's downtown though, we went there based on a suggestion in this thread I think. I love all pizza though. Cheese and greasy meats? Ok, I'm in.
  10. It looks pretty badass at 6:15 am when there is barely any light, coming down Shepherd over Memorial/Allen. Every day I wish I had my camera.
  11. This is an interesting conversation, I hear a lot of ideas I like. I'm with the one about the government putting some regulations and oversight on things. The insurance companies just keep increasing costs and being dropped by health providers, it's not getting any better. I don't know if I would use the UK as any good example - the people I've talked to about it say it's horrible, they still spend a ton on private insurance and their options for care are crap. So many go out of the country to do things, according to the few I've talked to.
  12. Tried to go to Java Java - lazy asses weren't gonna be open until 8:30. What kind of breakfast place is that? If the baby ever sleeps past 6:30 on the weekend maybe we'll try Java Java. So...we ended up at Frank's Diner on Mangum, and it was awesome. So much food for so little money. I had a waffle, grits, bacon (best bacon in town), biscuit. All good, and great service.
  13. I'm glad you wrote that, I was starting to think I was on crazy pills the way I hear people talk about Dry Creek. Been there twice and both times was not as happy as the bill was high. Not unaffordable high, but just based on what you get.
  14. Sounds great - and super close to us. Thanks for the suggestions!
  15. We've been to 11th St Cafe (pretty good), Onion Creek (limited menu), Yale St (at 21st, pretty good), and Dry Creek (too expensive for what you get IMO) - are there any hidden gems out there for a great breakfast? Not fancy healthy stuff, just good old fashioned breakfast. We've seen a couple places further down White Oak, but never tried them.
  16. Transcripts are pointless unless you think the person is lying about the GPA on their resume. Everyone within each degree we recruit for takes the same classes, so we don't really care. I wouldn't expect a person to have to provide that past their first job anyway. After a couple years, experience is all that matters. Some our best folks had horrendous GPA's, some of our worst had good ones. Depends on the position you are hiring for though. TheNiche - they give "A-" in college? For real? Yeah, my high school didn't even do pluses and minuses.
  17. Only class I ever got a C in, materials, I couldn't understand the professor and just gave up on it. Couldn't drop it because it was only offered in the spring and I couldn't wait the extra year. I knew things were bad on the first day when he tried to explain the "atomic lumber" to us.
  18. I had 7:30 classes pretty much every semester, definitely my first. I remember loving getting the best parking spots, and being done with all my classes for the day by 11:30. The biggest adjustment is that your schedule (outside of classes) is completely up to you. Some people don't handle this well, but if you just make a point to set aside time for homework/studying and stick to it, you'll find you have way more free time than others without discipline. I never once stayed up past 11pm (11pm for finals, every other day it was all done by 4:30) to study or do schoolwork, everyone else I know had to pull some idiotic all-nighter at some point. Not my gig. Get as involved as you can (or care to) with clubs/activities outside of class. That's one thing I wish I would have done a little more of, but what I did I enjoyed.
  19. Louisiana is booming with filming right now. My brother-in-law in Baton Rouge has been working as location manager for more than one movie at a time for over a year now, and things aren't slowing down. Most of it is due to the cheapness of filming there, and double bonus that it is bringing a lot of business to the S LA economy.
  20. I didn't and won't look up the definition, but to me "tram" is that thing on wheels (read: regular tires) that takes you around the zoo (don't know if Houston zoo has one, Baton Rouge one does/did). Basically an overblown golf cart train. This is rail.
  21. I found the NASA tour depressing. There wasn't that much to see, and even less to do. I can't imagine going there more than once. A new huge venue could give an opportunity to do something much more interactive. They could even have space camp there or something for kids, with different exhibits and demos and exercises, who knows. They call it space city, but last I checked I have to drive 45 minutes to get there, and I can see downtown from my roof.
  22. But then a couple of my friends would be homeless! I guess they could stumble over to Kinneally's. Seriously though, being torn down for what? I don't like what they've done expanding the crappy parking lot eastward, it looks like crap.
  23. For the first time in my 7 years in Houston I got to visit the Williams Tower today, it was great. I had a meeting on the 54th floor, the view was incredible. Well, aside from the ridiculously visible haze that our city has this time of year. Nasty. Downtown was all fuzzy, even from that close. It was still cool though, a very nice building.
  24. Panda Express has achieved mattress store/cell phone store/check cashing place status.
