  1. I did my 8th grade history fair project on the Camp Logan riots... I know I had pictures of the camp, and newspaper articles about the riots. I distinctly remember going to the Julia Ideson Building to do some of the research. Might be a good place to start.
  2. Pretty exciting... it'll be nice to have some more cranes downtown. Although, it will never compare to the medical center... where I counted at least 12 cranes last week.
  3. Those renderings are pretty cool. Although I would like to see the Embassy Suites building be a little more substantial. Too bad the credit crisis will prevent everything other than DT from getting off the ground for at least a few years. Unless those foreign investors step in... or maybe the City of Houston can make the second convention hotel happen if the Hilton Americas sells for $380 million. I would love to see the convention hotel go with a design that is dramatic and modern.
  4. I don't get it? Doesn't this new thread offer the same information and renderings available in the main thread?
  5. Kind of funny... One Park Place advertises the view of the refineries as a bonus: Houston-based Finger Cos. is developing One Park Place. The building has a selling point that no other city can claim, said Marvy Finger, chief executive officer: windows looking out on lights shining from miles of refineries and petrochemical plants after sundown. "You're really viewing a Christmas tree at night,'' he said. link
  6. My fiance and I drove around the east side looking at townhomes last weekend... I got real excited by the potential of the area (and was also suprised by how big the industrial wasteland is). There are areas of semi-dense townhome development (200K-400K it seemed) that feel almost like a neighborhood already. A nice soccer stadium with some surrounding retail will be a good boost. The rail will be a bigger boost. This area would be perfect for a little CoH-initiated planning This is all dependent on how long the worst of the credit crunch lasts though
  7. Jeez... get over yourself. Herman Park is 445-acres... most dense activity is centralized near the lake/zoo area, which is where the 1600-sq ft cafe is going. There is plenty of space to do your own thing. The Hermann Park Conservancy is responding to public demand to improve the park experience.
  8. Pretty exciting development for Hermann Park. It should help make the park/zoo more of a destination.
  9. What about "The Shops"? It seems everyone has acknowledged it as a nice foodcourt.
  10. I think the City and a few of our billionaires should toss down some cash to make this building standout. Although, since no actual performances will occur in the building, that may be a stretch.
  11. Pretty awesome find sevfiv. Gotta love all those Model T's... the car that put America on wheels, as they say.
  12. UTHSC and MD Anderson are separate entities... but, ya, the fluorescent box on top looks ugly and stupid. At least they could have used colored lighting like the Memorial Hermann professional building.
  13. Did you guys catch this article about a proposal to create one or two more "tier one" universities in Texas? Lawmakers on Wednesday took one step closer to anointing a third public flagship by inviting leaders of Texas' seven "emerging" research institutions to pitch a case for why they should become the state's next tier one research university, and how much it would cost the state. "We think we can do it, but we have to be really strategic," said Renu Khator, chancellor of the University of Houston System. "It's all about vision. Nobody invests in whining." Didn't we have a $10 billion budgetary surplus last year? Seems like they could establish a fund to create 2 or 3 more tier one universities... The seven under consideration: University of Houston, Texas Tech University, University of North Texas, UT-Dallas, UT-Arlington, UT-El Paso, UT-San Antonio
  14. So I heard a rumor Baylor is having some financial issues and may have trouble staffing and operating this hospital once it is built out... Anyone know what the deal is?
  15. Ya... too bad this is never gonna happen. Maybe something similar and/or better will happen in the next decade though.
  16. Marvy Finger should definitely have consulted you before he started construction, because it isn't connected to the tunnels...
  17. Maybe b/c someone might build a luxury apartment complex on the adjacent lot?
  18. So they consciously didn't want to invite more people?
